Thcro is not a public man in America to day who does not know, and who is not known by these gentle men, and tho reminiscences of public and social lifo which they can recount would' fill a congressional volume. During tho weary yet exciting years of the war ; through tho more peaceful times of Grant's administration s while Haves held tho reins of Government, and when Garfield was shot, it was theso men who stood in tho exeoutivo mansion, welcoming the advent of each now administration, bowing at its de parture, and receiving both martyrs through its portals. During that long, hot and never to bo forgcttqn, summer when President Garfield lay between "two ivorlils,'' tho nation became aware of the deadly ma larial inllticnco which hung about, tho Wlnto Hotiso. Hut all through that poriod these three men never deserted their posts for n simile day, although each 0110 was suffering intensely. In conversation with tho writer, Colonel Densmore said : "It is impossible to describe the tor tures I have undergone. To bo com pelled ltd smile and treat the thousands of visitors who come hero daily with courtesy when one is in tho greatest agony requires a tremendous effort. All that summer I had tcrriblo head aches, heart burn and a stilling sensa tion that sometimes took away my breath. My appetite was uncertain and I felt severe pains in the small of my back. I was under the doctor's caro with strict instructions not to go out of the houso but I remained on duty nevertheless. You would be sur prised to know the amouut of quinine I took ; on some days it was as much as sixteen grains." "And was Mr. Iiickavd badly off, too!" "I should think ho was. Why, timo and again we havo picked him up and laid him on tho mantel, here in tho ves tibule, ho was so used up." "Yes," exclaimed Mr. Iiickard. "I was so weak I could not ri-ie alter ly iug down without the aid of two canes, and then in a stooping position. Oh, we havo been m a pretty bad condition here, all of us." And yet yon are a'l the embodiment of health,'1 said the writer, as he look ed at tho three bright and vigorous men before him. , "Oh, ' yes," ciiiil Mr ltickard, we have not known what oicknos was for mon' than a year." "Havo you some secret wiy of over coming malaria and its attendant hor rors ?" "I think we havo a most certain way," replied Colonel Densmore, "but it is no secret. You seo about two years ago my wifo began to grow blind, and I was alarmed at her condi tion. . She finally became so she could not tell whether a person were whito or black at n distance of ten feet. One of her lady friends advised her to try a certain treatment that had done won ders for her and to make a long story shoit, she did so anil was completely cured. This induced mo to try the sanio means for my own restoration and as sonn as I found it was doing mo good I recommended it to my associates and wo havo all been cured right hero in the stronghold of malaria and kept in health over since by means of Warner's Safe Cure. Now I am not a believer in mcdlcitics hi general, but I do not hesitate to say' that I am satisfied I should havo died of Bright's disease of the kidneys before this had it not been for this wonderful remedy. Indeed, I use it as a house hold medicine and give it to my chll dron whenever they haye any ail ments." "Yes," exclaimed Mr. Pendel, "I use it in my family all the while and havo found it the most efficient remedy wo havo over employed. I know of very many public men who are using it to day and they all speak well of it.." "I weigh ICO pounds to-day," said Mr. Rickard, "and when my physicians told mo over a year ago I could not hope to recover I weighed 122 pounds. Labor North and South. Genoiul John H. Gordon (who suc ceeded to the command of "Stonewall" Jackson upon the lalttr's death,) gave this interesting talk on tho relative condition of labor North nnd South, a few days ago : "I have no hesitation id saying, sir, that tlio colored man to day in the South in, take it all in nil, much belter -'paid' forhis'' labor and much better fed and housed than too laboring man in any part of tho world. Colored labor 11 chiefly on the cotton plantations. A laborer gets on nn average $1) n month, nnd his hours of labor aro at no season of tho year excessive. Now 10 a month does tint lopk like a very largo sum upf here, but fee what it means. It mcahs, if the laborer cares to I. old it clean, net profit to his credit. And I may bo permitted to say that our people de serve great praise for that systom whioh piodiiees this result. You see, tho land is divided lip lil'thiS Way; First of all there aro tho land owners, who lot it ou lease, or work, the, land nt their pleasure. Then them ate those1 who lease the land nnd work it either by regular payments to the laborers of a given sum or by a stipulated sharo in the crop. Thus the laborers are nt liberty either to draw their money from month to month or to leave their wages stand, take its worth iu cotton nt tho end of the season, and sell on their own nccount, or they may take part money and part cotton. Mean while thoy, with the families, livo on the plantation, rent froe. They have their houso nnd their patch, whero they may cultivate enough corn, veg etables, polatot's and fruits to supply tho family during the year. Thoy have firing free. They can rear their chick ens or their pigs." They havo n cow to give them milk, and if not they have their milk free from the cattle of the owner or lessee. Moreover, they havo their rations free of bacon, bread, mplas'ses ;or whatever it maybe and their money from month to month or nt the end of a season, as I have said. Tlley havo a magniticant climate, which is just adapted to them. Theit clothing is cheap and they need little of it. Compare the condition of the laborer up hero who receives his $30 $40 or even $50 a month with that of the negro laborer ou the plantation. What with rent and clothing, food' and fuel, it is much harder for tho laborer hero to savo money, while he does not live nearly as well as the man on the plantation; and I say again, our peoplo deserve great praise for tho system which so arranges labor as to pioduce this condition of things." Eemedies for Headaohe, Tho following recipes and sugges tions for the treatment of different forms of headache are collected from a variety of trustworthy sources: Two grains citrate of caffeine, in capsule, taken every half hour, is a very effec tual remedy in nervous and sick head; ache. One or two doses aro often suf ficient ii give complete relief. Tho otdy obj ction to its use is sleepless nes", which sometimes results if it is taken in the evening. It is probable to guaiana, as being hardly ever re jected by the stomach. The following according to Dr. W. W. Carpentt-r, U very effect u.d inmost forms of head; ache ; Muriatn of ammonia, three drachms; acetate of morphia, one grain; citrate of eiiitVine, tli'uty grains, aro matic spirits of ammonia, one drachm ; elixir of guarana, four ounces ; rosu water, four ounces. Mix. Dessert spoonful every ten or twelve minutes. In nervous headache, Dr. W. A. Ham mond states the vnlue of various drugs as follows : Oxide of zinc is of great value. Ordinary dose, two grains, three times a day, after meals ; maxi mum dose, five grains. It is best given in torin ot pills. JNux vomica is pre ferable to strychnia. The dose is one- quarter L'rain, nfter meals. If tho patient be cliloroiic it is well to com bine a grain of reduced iron and half a giain ot sulphate of quinine. His ninth, iu the form of subcarbonate, will often take the place of oxide of ziiis. JJose, two grains, after enoh meal. Bismuth probably aids diges tion more than any mineral tonic, and is ot use when there is gastrio distur bance. The bromines are serviceable when the nervous system has been ir ritated ; when it is exhausted, they do harm. Phosphorus is very useful in most forms of neivous headache. The best results are obtained from dilute phosphoric acid, in doses of thirty drops, iargoly diluted, three times a day, after eating, or phosphide of zinc, 0.10 grain, in pill, three times a day. Arsenic as a nerve tonic, stands next in value to zinc. Dose, live drops of Fowler's solution, three times a "day, after meals. Galvanism is sometimes valuable, but by no means a specific.
