THE COLiJMBlAW AND DMPtmfrTJ BlX)flMffl) Among The Lepers. A correspondent to tlio Now York Timet from Honolulu, Sandwich Ia lnntls, Bays s I havo rccontly Bncnt ten days at tho lepor settlement, wncro tlio victims In cxilo await their Inovita hlo doom. And while I am not pre pared to endorso common rumor, I nm prepared to tell tnnoh what I bcllovo will be of interest about tlio mysterious blight. One day last month I colled upon tho premier of tho Hawaiian king dom (Ills Excellency William Gibson), nnd said I would llko permission to go to Moloknl and have a week with tho lepers. His oxcellcnoy had no objec tion, no, noun In tho least. Tho Hawaiian Kingdom has a leper population of two thousand. Of thcao less than ono half arc in custody. There, is no physician on tho island who knows enough about leprosy to convlnoo any other physician that tho truth haA been reached. Thero are no white lepers under restraint, and prob ably not more than fifty or sixty whites afllioted with the disease. In tho doctor's books you find lepro sy classed among tho neuroses, or skin diseases, but if there ever was a diseaso that goes beneath the skin, reaching to every vital organ, leprosy is that af fliction. Tho flesh sloughs off, tuber cles form and drop nway, sometimes being blown from their place of forma tion by tho harsher winds of tho trades, whloh sweep over Molokai at certain seasons. The bones rot away at some places, and crumble into dry dust at tlicir points or articulation, tlio colors of tho cyo blend, tho tonguo shrinks, the tooth drop from their uuresistiiii! rockets, tho senses deaden, tho faco falls into tho neck and between tlio shoulders! and shortly afterward comes tloath. Hut the decay is ot ovcry or gan, the heart and lungs succumbing at last, sometimes tho brain having al most disappeared. Leprosy, indeed, is tho ono yiseasq which attacks every portion of the human body, and uot until it has fastened its fatal grasp upon oyery organ docs it close lis la bora of death" and givo its victim sur cease of pain. Sometimes tho leper is tho sport of anaesthesia for a period, but sooner or later comes tho pain which knows no parallel, and at night at tho leper settlement I have sat for hours listening to the cries ot anguish from a hundred lips, which no medi- cino could still. And these cries arc always heard. A leper may for a day or two have an interval to pain, but among tho thousands on Molokai there aro always the cries of a hundred or more to bo heard. When a leper is reported to tho po lieo of any district an officer is sent to fetch him or her to Honolulu, where there is a detention hospital put on the outskiits of the city and on tho bank of the beautiful bay. At tho hospital there aro accommodations for about 120. It is filled every two months. The establishment consists of a plot of ground, say bvo acres, around which is a very high picket fence, with a deep ditch outside of it. Within aro cotta ges or wards. There is littlo shadf, exempt that made by the house., no sward or running water. The otistrnc- tiou of the homes is primitive, their luriiiiniiig pium 10 uie verge in uis comfort, but the.y aie plain. The lio pital full, a steamer comes to take to the Inland of Molokai, those whose condition is most advanced, thero to remain until death. It was with such a party, that I traveled to Molokai. It was not my lot to witness many sad scenes, but none of them approached in any way those which all ended tho -C C .1 I lf..t sepuruuuu ui iuiiiiiihh us menu iiuuuiui of lepers sailed away to their exile. Daughters reached out their arms to mothers, whom they might not em brace j wives held up their mouths for kisses which their husbands could not givo babes held up in the arms of sti augers, laughed and eoocl to their mothers, to whose breaking hearts thev might not be held in ono last, loving clasp. And sobs such sobs, "alas 1 that come from tho depths of hearts wrung with tho misery of a hopeless condition." Presently tho lines were cast off, tho littlo stormcr turned her head away and steamed slowly toward the bar. I went into the little cabin set apart for the captain and closed the door, determined to hear no more and seo'no more such grief. The little port was open, when suddenly it was dark ened, and looking up I saw the dark but beautiful face of a woman whose young husband was on the way to Molokai. Sho had swam out to inter cept tho steamer, and being as indeed aro all her race as much atrhome in water as on land, sho had no difficulty In1 n!p.rtmnlihinr hur mirnnan Ali" & - r i - sho said, "you aro not a doctor nor i constable. Tell my husband to look over tho side to me, and God will bless yon I weht on deck. Wo were steaming slowly, waiting for tho Government In spector to complete his task before tak ing his own boat for the shore. Tho lepers bad become quiet or compara tively so, except for pain. A fow womeu were rooking on their hunches and moaning, a young half-white girl had flung herself on tho deck in a wild abandonment of grief, and behind tho sraoko stack 1 found tho husband kncolinc? in nraver. His face, serrated by the leprous sores, was held toward the sun, tho tears were streaming down his disease-cut features, softeuining them by their agony of supplication. "William," I said, "your wife is along side. Go quietly to tho place 1 shall point out to you and you will see her." Tho man sprung up, and for a moment was perleotly boautuul, Btich a joy as came in his face. Then ho turned and ran to the place I indicated. Wo wero then nnder a full head ot steam pass ing Diamond Head. "Where is she t" I asked. He pointed astern, and thoic, not an eighth of a mile, we saw her, swimming toward some. iishtiig.boatn, her soft black hair floating out behind her and her arm every now and again waving to us good-byo. The leper set tlement is generally called Molokai, but that, in fact, is the name of the is land upon which it is placed. Kalmv.v la is tho oilioial namo of tho town or village. It is situated at tho foot of a great ravine, through which at some timo a stream of lava has poured. On either sido aro great precipices reach ing far into tho sea. At their bases tho surf beats high, sometimes, break ing as liigh up their brown, hard fronts as Hoveniy feet. Hero the Northeast trades roll up tho seas they gather in a passage of two thousand miles over an obstructed ocean. But tho rocks stop thorn, aud sullenly they fall back again with a heavy monotone. Tho two cliffs run backward in sharp ascents till they moot oyer tho narrow pass through whioh admission to tho loper settlement by laud is alone possible. It is as if nature had mado a prisou. Ono man could hold a thousand at bay over tho bridle path and one guard is sufficient to restrain tho thousand lepers whioh are at this place. His Holiness has received also tho prosent of 120 palm-tree branches, sont by tho Uhapter of aan Itemo, repre sented by Monslgnor Brcsea. This Monslgnor Is the loading member of tho 1 1 rosea family from Sau Hemo, which lias appeared every year before tho Pope on Palm Sunday xlneo 1500. This privilege wns granted on the lOlh of Seutotnbor, 1J580, when St Peter's squaro was the thealro of a greatuvent. Uno hundred and forty horses and near ly 1,000 workmon with thlrty-fivo mi dlines, wero raising tho great oboliskof granito which now adorns tho contro of tlio square. Architect Domiuio Foil tain, with a silver trumpet, was giving the signals. A deadly silence wns pro served by tho presence of the hangman, who had prepared n gibbet by order of Sixtus, and was ready to hang any ono who disturbed tho performance. 1 ho celebrated monolith of tho old cir cus of Caligula was nearly erect, when the chafing ropes began to givo way. What elso can 1 do for you T The Captain requested the 1'opo to grant him and his successors the priv ilege of supplying palms to tho Church of St. Peter for Palm Sunday, and he obtained tho favor. For the last three centuries the Brescas have appaered before the Pope of Home on Palm Sun day. Apple-Tree Borers. One of tho first enemies which claims tho attention of the fruit-grower in the spring, is tho apple-tree borer. As soon as tho frost is out of tho ground, and the weather is suitable, every ap pie tree should he carefully examined ; to do this tho earth should bo scraped away from tho tree down to tho roots, then with a large knifo scrape the tree, so as to make it smooth, arid if any borers have found their way into the tree, the fact will be at once discovered by their casting ; if they cume from an egg deposited last summer, thev . will be quite small, say half an inch in length, and will ho found about four inches down from tho point where tho I egg wa. deposited, nnd will be found in the sap ot the woed, jutt under tho bark ; in fuel, by cutting away the harK thev will bo seen laying in tho chan. nel which they have made by eating into tho solid wood ; to kill them when thus found, is but tho work of a mom- j ent ; but if they have been in the treo long enough to mature, they will have eaten their way back to the point whero the egg was deposited, and there they will bore into tho wood and go up from four to eight inches, where they will change to a miller and come out as soon as the weather becomes warm, When they have advanced to this stage, they do no further injury except to lay eggs for another generation ; to pr-vent this they should be killed ; this o.ui usually be done with a very small ..... t. . niwieuuot! ien menus long, running it up into tho hole until it reaches the worm. When tho treo has boon thoroughly examined, and all of the worms killed, the earth should bo put hack again and a few shovels of fino gravel placed around the tree, making a cone up to where the trunk is smooth ; this need not bo disturbed until next autumn, when it should be removed and tho treo again examined. The borers onco out of a tree can in this way be kept out. Massachusetts Ploughman. Gapes m Fowls. A pamphlet has recently been published in Franco on the gapes in fowls, which states that the disease is caused by tho presence in the treacbea of the fowls of worms of the germs syngamus. Tho male or female worms attach themselves to the mucus membrane of tho fowl's breath ing tubes. The female dies and sets free her eggs by the decomposition of her body. These eggs hatch out under favorable conditions in twenty-eight to thirty days. Tho diseaso is comrauui cated, first, by food or drink whioh has become infested with eggs or em bryos : second, tho diseased birds. which aro constantly disseminating tho eggs ot tho parasite. A very efficient remedy is said to be rue and garllo In tho water given to tho fowls to drink. Assafcetida is also a remedy. A prepar ed iood made with egg yolk, nettlo leaves and garlic, powdered into a paste, whioh is afterward made into pills, has been found eilective. Home iteitiH.
