matter which of Itself Is worth tho price of
a year's subscription. Prof. Heck's story
is good reading and teaches a lesson of in
terest to the instructors of youth. The
Rules of tho Democratic Party of this
county have not been published for some
years, and it Is Important that every mem
ber of the organization should be familiar

The Republicans of town elected Ed
ward Reese and Joseph Dawes to tho Re

ing resolution was passed : "That the del
egates use every honorablo means for tho
nomination of Gen. William Lillcy of

On a vote taken as to preference in tho
coming Presidential struggle, all but two
were for Blaine and Lincoln.
Orders wero received last week by tho

The Big Mine Run collieries are being

Ono of the ropes at Centralla colliery

The Eycr's school closed on tho 20th ult
with an evening literary entertainment con
sisting ot over thirty dialogues, essays and
declamations, which were gone through
with in n manner creditable to all the par,
tlcipants. The exercises were interspersed
with excellent vocal and instrumental inu
sic.
The farmers of this section have com,
menced plowing for corn, and repairing
their fences.
I noticed in a recent issue of your paper
an nrticlc over the signature "A Citizen
Taxpayer," concerning the expenses of tho
public roads of this county. Tiic writer ot
that communication intimates that persons
living from n public road having the use of
a lane which runs through others' land nnd
encumbered only by n gate or pair of bars,
should not have a road at the public ex,
pensc. Now, I think this Is n selfish and
unjust view of tho case. There are other
and greater reasons In many instances
which might bo urged for n free road,
For Instance, if the owners of the land
through which tho lane leads would shut
out to the public the petitioner's hogs and
cattle on purpose to annoy nnd cnuse him
trouble, It would be n sulllclunt reason to
apply for a road free of such encumbrance.
Again n person so situated could not sell
his land for near its value, because of the
dependent and annoying circumstances
under which It would place tho purchaser,
lliese are considerations of vastly more
importance than the trivial matter of a
gate or a pair of bars to open and shut,
They affect the peace and happiness of cit,
izens who arc unfortunate in not owning
land along a public road. All pay road
tax and all alike aro entitled to free roads
whether they bo Inlets to other land or
otherwise, else a certain class of persons
arc not on equal footing with their neigh
bors.
Somo malicious persons havo broken
open tho door of tho Eycr school house
sinco school closed, nnd somo window
panes havo been broken out. A great deal
of such work has been going on for sever
al years past at that place. The offenders
may bo caught somo of these times, when
they shall have to suffer tho penalty of
