tho coldest weather for many years, last
week. In Minnesota tho thermometer
reached forty-two degrees below zero.
James Hoat. an old and respected citi
zen of Hemlock township died nt his home
near Iluck Horn ou Tuesday January 1st,
aged 75 years, 2 months nnd 10 days.
Miss F. Adelo Search nnd Rev. Arthur
Johnson were married at the residence of
tho bride's parents in Shickshlnny on Wed
nesday of last week. The wedding was a
brilliant affair.
Tuesday nnd Wednesday were stormy
days. On Tuesday night tho wind blew a
young hurricane. Tho smoko stack at the
woolen mill was blown down and tho roof
torn up, doing considerable damage.
Tho almanac of tho Philadelphia Times
for 1834 has come to hand. It Is tho most
complete political handbook published,
and contains a vast amount of other useful
information.
We are sorry that we are obliged to omit
the Buckhorn items this week because the
writer forgot to sign his or her name to the

Two young ladles named OUlo Moyer
and Sadlo Marsden were drowned In the
river near Wllkesbarre last Saturday after
noon. They broke through tho ico while
skating. The bodies were recovered.

month ho sold 220 gallons of oysters. Tills
represents a weight of 2100 lbs. He Is one

On Monday night about 11 o'clock the
steam whistle at Lockurd's shops began to
blow and continued without ceasing for
nearly a hull hour. It seems tho Ico gath

weight opened the valve, nnd kept It open

dropped off. Quito a number of people

to bo small about the matter ho says, "all
right." Another comes In tho samo wny
until the whole of one thousand bushels
aro trusted to ono thousand different per
sons, and not ono of tho purchasers con
cerns himself about It, for It Is a small
amount they owo tho farmer, and of course
that will not help him any, Ho docs not
realize that tho farmer has frittered away
his largo crop of corn, and that Its value is
due In a thousand little driblets, and that
he Is seriously embarrassed in his business
because his debtors treat it as a little mat
ter.

Alkman, daughter of Levi Alkmnn of same
township, wero united in wedlock.
Miss Mary Alkman, sister of the
bride, was first bridesmaid and W. L.
White, brother of the groom, first grooms
man, Miss Jennie Sheep, of Jerseytown,
Pa., was second maid of honor nnd John
C. Yocum of Catawlssa, Pa., second
groomsman. While Miss Lizzie Whitney
of Berwick, Pa., played tho wedding
march tho bridal party entered tho parlor
in the following order: John C. Yocum
nnd Miss Jennie Sheep, W. L. White nnd
Miss Mary Alkman followed by tho bride
nnd groom. Prof. C. K. Cantleld of
Ornngeville, Pa., pronounced tho marriage
ceremony of tho Presbyterian Church,
after which ho declared tho parties man
and wife. After the usual congratulations
aud good wishes of the guests had been
tendered, all repaired to the dining room
whero an elegant and sumptuous meal was
nicely served and hcaitlly enjoyed at this
point all felt they could participate. The
bride's cako was beautiful and admired by
all. Tho brido was very neatly nnd tnste
fully attired In a cream colored satin and
nun's veiling suit nnd tullo veil with deco.
rations of natural flowers. The first maid
of honor appeared In n suit of cream col
ored nun's veiling, and tho second maid of
honor was attired In a similar suit trimmed
with satin and Spanish lace. Only a few
of tho immediate friends and relatives of
the brldo and groom were present at tho
wedding. The gifts were numerous,
beautiful and useful, consisting of various
articles of silverware, china tea service,
toilet set, hand paintings, &c. The brldo
ind groom tooic the noon train at Blooms
burg for nn extended tour through the
South, going by way of Philadelphia, leav
ing there on Saturday by steamer lor Sa
vannah, Ga., and by rail from thero to
Jacksonville, Fla., where they will again
take tho steamer for Tocoi and from there
to St. Augustine by rail, returning the
same route. Wo loin with their mauv
friends iu wishing them a pleasant lonrney,
safe return and a long, happy and prosper
ous future.

Tho tunnel at the Morris IJidgo is at last
completed. Two new gangways aro now
In progress, nnd In a short time .Mr. Trout
man i Co., will ship a very lino quality of
coal to market.
Putrick McDonnell was badly hurt at tho
Hazel Dell mine on Monday, by being
bumped with a wagon going down tho
slope.
A car-load of mules arrived here last
week for tho Continental colliery. Tho
mules will take tho place of the locomo
tive In bringing coal to tho bottom of the
slope. This will give employment to n
number of extra men.
Quito a number of the township peda
gogues attended Institute last week.
Judging from the numerous visits paid
to the hulf.way houso Thomas Jlurphy
will soon leave tho ranks of bachelorhood.
Thomas Mumford, of tho Valley depot,
spent Sunday with his parents in Mnuch
Chunk.
James Bakey, Heubcn Ball and John
Lynch left here on Monday to attend school

A sleigh containing two couplo capsized
when turning tho corner nt Mr. Curry's
hotel on Sunday. Fortunately tho horse
stood still until tho occupants wero picked
up.
Mrs. Jehu Kenlir met with a sad acci
dent on Monday; while going for a bucket
of water sho slipped on tho ice, breaking
ler leg. This is tho first accident of tho
kind we have had this winter, and hope it
will bo the last.
Miss Canon, of Locust Gap, and Miss
Gillespie, of Jeddo, were tho guests of -Miss
ivulo uniespio last week.
If tho hoys rule tho town let It continue.
If not, let the authorities stop tho coasting
on our pavements, or wo will hear nf n
suit for damages shortly.
Tho alhohsorhlng toplo on tho streets of
airnrdvllleis "Smallpox." There havo been
cases there for tho lust two mouths, aud
several have died with tho dreaded disease.
Tho last victim is a woman with five small
children, Tho citizens of that borough
havo organized n Board of Health, and
every effort will bo used to prevent the
spread of the disease. Dr. Curr has been
nppolutcd physician, with a salary of $120
per mouth.

Prof. Currnn, of tho Bloomsburg Normal
School, was Introduced, who gnvo n talk
on Natural Sciences. Ho dwelt nt somo
length on tho Importance of teaching this
subject In tho public schools.
Prof. Little, of Washington, D. 0., was
Introduced. After ho distributed pencils
rurnished by tho Eagle Pencil Company,
and drawing blanks furnished by Ivlson,
Blakctnan, Taylor & Co., ho took up the
subject of drawing and guvo tho teachers
nn cxcrclso In freehand drawing.
Miss Brooks, Superintendent of Lack
awanna county, gave an cxcrclso In
Civil Government. Prof. Johonnot now
took the floor nnd spoko at somo length
upou tho importance of teaching Civil
Government In tho public schools. Tho
teacher should begin with tho officers of
tho township first. Teach their functions,
etc., go from these to those of the county,
and then the State, aud nation. This Is
teaching ot tho most practical kind nnd
what wilt bo of use to tho pupil, us a cit
izen. He then took up the subject of ob
ject teaching. On being questioned as to
tho phonetic spelling, ho said it should not
be Introduced tn u course of study until
nftcr tho third year. Ho gave sovcral ex
amples when early phonetic spelling had
completely spoiled their graphic spoiling.
The Iustltuto adjourned to meet at 1:30
p. in.

Prof. Johonnot took up ns his subject,
"How can wo keep the Primary Pupils en
gaged while not reciting ?" He advocated
having a children's corner in which tho
little ones may retire to play when their
tasks nro completed. They should have
building blocks, and be encouraged to In
vent, and construct, tho teacher extending
his nld when their Ingenuity is exhausted.
Teachers should carefully look after the
physical comforts of their pupils. Ho se
verely condemned the custom of ventilat
ing from tho windows.
J. 0. Brown, editor of the Republican, fa-
vorcd the institute with an address. Ho ad
vocated a happy medium between tho
fogytsm of the old education, and the fa
natical enthusiasm met with In advocates
of the new.
Prof. Little continued his drawing exer
cise of tho morning, giving tho teachers
many excellent hints on this subject.
Miss Helen Potter nddrcsscd the teach
ers for a short time. Sho gave a very
practical talk on reading, and suggested
that much' taught In schools could be left
out of tho course of study to mako room
for more practical things. Sho gave a
reading "Jimmy Brown on Art." After
that a selection from the "Merchant of
Venice" nnd a humorous selection entitled
"Their Way."
Prof. Johonnot talked for a short time
on the "Demands of the New Education."
Ho said that tho word and sentence meth
od should bo used in reading. Object
teaching should bo systematic nnd con
nected. Language should always be sub
ordinate to thought. Instruction should
bo based upon tho experience of tho child.
Time for'adjouriiment arrived, the talks
were finished.
THUItSUAY EVENING.
The evening's entertainment was opened
with music by Prof, Nilcs' orchestra.
Miss Helen Potter then camo before the
nudlencc nnd rendered "Sandolphan" by
Longfellow. "Gabriel Grub," from Dick
ens, was read, and T. B. Hcade's beautiful
poem, "Drifting," was recited, followed
by "George Washington nnd his Little
Hatchet." Sho impersonated nn old-time
reading class, using the "Elegy In the
Country Church Yard," Imitating the
children's different blunders In a very
amusing manner.
Misses Jennie and Nettle Stiles sang
"Birds in Dreamland Sleep," accompanied
by orchestra.
Miss Potter appeared nnd impersonated
Sarah Bernhardt in one ot Victor Hugo's
plays. As Aunt Melissa, sho gave her
views of boys. Sho then appeared as
John B. Go ugh, nnd delivered one of his
lectures. Tho audience was delighted
with tho entertainment, and was one of tho
largest ever seen In tho Opera House.
FHIDAY MORNINO.
Devotional exercises conducted by Hcv.
Manhardt. Prof. Johonnot took the sub
ject, 'Demands of the New Education' which
ho left unfinished tho session before. Prof.
Waller continued the subject begun ou
Tuesday morning, tho "Sensibilities." lie
showed how useless It was to endeavor to
control children by appealing to those mo
tives which control adults, Ho made
somo practical remarks on tho subject of
ventilation, which no teacher can afford to
ignore.
Supt. Grimes, iu tho namo of the Insti
tute, returned thanks to tho Instructors
and others who added in making tho In
stitute a success.
Prof, Little gave an Interesting exercise
In drawing. Tho committees on resolu
tions reported tho following :

burg, commonly known as tho Light Street road
nnd to vacate such portions ot tho said Light
Street road as may thereby become useless.
SECTION L Ilo It ordained nnd enacted by tho
Town council of tho Town of Bloomsburg, and It
Is hereby ordained and enacted by authority of tho
samo: That a portion ottho Light Street road
from whero it intersects Second street shall bo
straightened, widened nnd opened to tho width of
seventy leet, for a distance ot forty-two feet on
tho East side, and ilfty-clgut and three-tenths feet
on tho West hide, tho centre thereof to bo in a lino
beginning at a point in tho centro lino ot second
street, Blxty-seven nnd slx.tcnths feet East ot the
centro stone In Second street standing nt a point
in lino ot tho West side ot East street, and running
thenco 25 degrees and 4 ) minutes west ninety-two
feet to a centre stono at tho Intersection ot this
centro line with tho centreline otn further por
tion ot said Light Street road as hereinafter
straightened and widened.

In tho llrst section hereof shall bo stralgtened,
widened and opened to tho width of fifty feet, tho
centre lino thereof to be In a lino beginning on tho
west bide of tho portion mentioned In tho first
section hereof, at a point twenty-eight nnd eight
tenths feettrom tho northwest corner ot Second
street nnd tho said Light street road, and running
thenco north 84 degrees and u minutes, cast four
teen hundred and nttyfeettoa certain stone in
centro of said Light street road.
SECTION III. Any and every portion of tho
said Light Street road as now used, not within tho
highway as by this ordlnanco straightened, wid
ened, nnd to bo opened and thus becoming useless,
shall be, and aro hereby declared to bo vacated Im
mediately upon tno completion of tho work ot
straightening, widening and opening as by this
ordlnanco ordained ana enacted. And thereupon
tho said portion ns w Idened by the ilrst and sec
ond sections hereof, bhall bo a public street or
highway of tho said Town ot lllooiuaburg.
SECTION IV'. That proceedings bo Instituted
for the assessment of damages to all persons who
may bo injured, and contrluutlons upon nil such
properties as shall bo benefited by the straighten.
