Postmaster General Grcsham is making
himself solid with the newspapers by order,
ing that postal clerks shall not read other
people's papers. This will be a little rough
on some of the country postmasters, whose
habits were formed years ago. There isn't
as much care in tho handling of newspa
pers in somd of tliu country postoiilccs as
there ought to be. A newspaper should bo
treated no less carefully than a letter, and
there is about the samo right to open one
ns the other. The new law may hereafter
open the eyes of certain route agents and
postmasters to tho criminality ot their
practice of appropriating to their own use
newspapers directed to paying subscribers.

Orancevllle Ncwn,
Tho academy began on Monday a week
In full blast, but is dally receiving more
students. We have an Institution wo are
proud of. Prof. Heck Is doing n noble
work ; It has shown Itself In the recent ex
amination. Tho Prof, has had about fifty
teachers under his instruction since last
April. He employs only those who nre ns
earnest lit the work as himself . His Nor
mal term gave entire satisfaction although
in thu heat of summer and tho busiest time
of the year. On Monday evening be organiz
ed a Literary society with his students.
Thu meetings of this society in the past
haVe been of the greatest interest and were
crowded with interested listeners.
Rumor has It that one of our clerks of
pugilistic dimensions got away with sixteen
frogs and about a bushel of other eatables
a few days ago. How is it, Gcorglo ?
Lawn parties arc 0110 of thu most exciting
exercises of the day. Situffy, the Republican
correspondent, lias caught it, and unless
some other sport as a countcractant can be
produced, we nre compelled to adviso him
to drive hack for a change of exercise.
Mr. Joe Megargcll of Michigan is visiting
his Bro. Dr. Megargcll of this place. Joe,
we uxtcud to you our hand, and from the
bottom of our heart we say, shake.
Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Bowman, Mr. Mc
llenry, Miss Houser, Miss Morris, Miss
White and about all the old students aro
back again.
Our sporting team failed to havo their us
ual practice last Saturday. Their next prac
tice will be with puff balls. Tho boys
' shoot hard, and they boast quite a bit that
I no other team lu tho county has sand
' enough to challenge them to a test.
I Theio was quite a collection of pugilists
on the comer last Saturday night. Tliu
I result was that wo can give an account of
one of tlte worst lights over known in tills
town. It wns with great difficulty that the
pugilists were parted. Th cy were careless
hitters, but struck light, damages have
been repaired. We noticed a nose In a
sling, a few eyes in mournlns, some blood
marks, torn shirts, broken window lights,
and have thu promlso of another set-to.
Look out boys, its hard work and 110 fun.
Miss Minnie Hewctt, Miss Helslcr and
Mattio Megargcll are visitors of Dr. O. A.
Megargcll.
Wo are informed that our good land
lord Geo. Heckman has ordered I1I3 lumber
for his largo shed, nnd that he will soon be
able to accommodate his many patrons to
the best of shelter and stable accommoda
tions
The merchants all appear to bo doing a
good business. And we are inclined to
think that with the amount of goods that
the entci prising firm of Lillcy & Sleppy aic
bending out, they aro having a rushing
trade. I presumo their low prices and
square dealing accounts for their great
usb.
Dr. Ammcrmnu's new house on Main

believes In the saying, that what is wortli
doing at all, is worth doing well. His
house is large and commodious and when
finished will present a fine appearance.
Doc, by the way is there auy virtue in rot

A. W. C. Keller is painting his yard

Charlie, there would bo less danger to prac.

We nru all anxious to hear tho shrill
whistle of the locomotive. Tho ccnernt
pinion of our citizens seems to be in favor
ol a rail road. Yet there are a few execiv
tloni in our midst that cling to tho idea
that an ox team Is fast enough for them

A number of young men came hero last

Such weeds as chlckwced and purslane,
which very quickly go to seed, should be
carefully removed from tho laud, lu order
to destroy thu seeds they contain tho
safest way is to dump them In some out-of-
thu way corner where they can do no
harm, Jor to compost them carefully with
hot horse dung, which will effectually do
stroy the seeds, if tho compost is turned
carefully so as to bring all parts Into tho
heat of the central portion of the heap.
The outside of tho heap does not become
hot enough to destroy nil the seeds, but
the middle does.
