Webster made some appropriate remarks, among lliem being the following: "A long nnd laborious life has been brought to a close. The profession of a Journalist Is no sinecure. To have walked in the editorial ranks for fifty years, was not to traverso a path of roses nor to have been borne along In Indolent case. The life of an editor is one of many vicissitudes, much rivalry, strong antagonisms. No greater battles have been fought on tented field with tho edge of n swoid Ilka those battles which have been fought with the pen. There has been war to the very hilt In many editorial sanctums. To have been n journalist during the past fifty years of our national existence means hard work, heated brain, midnight oil, the 'suffering of hitter innuendo and gross misrepresentation. And yet Journalism is a profession of high dis tinction, one of the most honorable und when conducted aright, ono of the most needed. No ngency, save the pulpit, has so educated the sentiment of the public, so directed the mind of the people, so mould, ed legislation. The press must not only di rect the; thought of tho people, but do the thinking for the people. This has been pre eminently true during thu past fifty years of our nation's life. No country, perhaps, has had bucIi n vnried history, has under gone so ninny changes, lias encountered so many vicissitudes. Our changeful political complexion, our wars, our llnnuclal crisis, our unprecedented growth, our gigantic enterprises, and our inllucntlul states among the nations, have all contributed to and made necessary the most vigorous applica tion of journalistic energy. During all these changes Col. Tate has wielded i. strong lien, has consecrated ids life witli single, ness of purposo and with unswerving decis. ion. During all his life lie has stood by the one party, has adhered to its principles, lias fought its battles; whatever may be men's political predilcctlous, however they may differ In relation to any interest of life, they will respect a man of strong conviction. A man, who, believing he is right, will stand I iv Jus principles, commands the re spect of thoughtful men, is indeed every inch a man, is n king among men by "di vine; ordination." I'licHdny'H Htorin. A terrific storm pussed through this sec tlon on Tuesday afternoon, but thu people of Bloomsburg were fortunate enough not to be visited. The storm wns a genuine western cyclone.
