The Montmtr American conies out this
week in a new dress. It Is quite an Im
provement to the paper. The news in it
also seems to be more entertaining. The
editor, however, is In error In referring to
the chapter on Madiuno Montour, on the
first page, as being a subject little known
of. If he will lend Col. Freeze's History
of Columbia county, he may gain almost
the same knowledge.
The West Ilrnneh Susquehanna was
about twelve feet above low water mark
on Monday, and the lumbermen were run-
iilng logs very rapidly. The water was at
the proper height for flouting logs and
many were brought to the mills for the
summer's sawing. This is encouraging
news both for the builders as well ns work
men. The West llraneh planing mills
ought to do a thriving business the coming
year.

Mrs. Simon Slilve died at her home on
Friday morning, April 0th, at about three
o'clock. She ha.l li.vn complaining for
some time but !u 1 not been conllued to
bed. On Thursday morning she had a
stroke of paralysis, and remained sense
less until her death. She was a consistent
christian woman, and a member of the
M. K. church. Her age was 07 years and
7 months lacking one day. The funeral
took place on Sunday afternoon.
Hub Hurdette was greeted on Friday
night by one of the largest audiences ever
gathered In the Opera House. His lecture,
"The Hlse and Fall of the Mustache"
abounds In fun, and kept his hearers snill-
ng and apiilaudhi" throughout. His refer
ence to Joseph Cook seemed to be especial
ly appreciated. The success of the lecture
course has been due to theartlvo and intel
ligent management ot the clergymen of this
town, as well as the fortunate selection of
ipeakcrs. Tho association should certainly
give us another course next winter-

Among the Industries of Henton, the
large wagon factory of Appleinan ii Mc
Henry stands prominent. They are young
men of industry and energy, and about a
year ago erected the largu three story
frame building now occupied by them.
They are making heavy wagons, and have
on hand six that are ready lor the market.
It Is their intention soon to make light
wagons also. Their work is all done by
skilled mechanics, und the best of mate-

The Telephone Company have completed
n trunk lino between Danvlllo and Milton,
connecting all thu towns on thu West
llraneh between Siinburymid Lock Haven,
and expect In less than n month from this
date to have trunk lines wot king through
toScr.mton, Hazleton, Shamokln, and all
the towns In the anthracite coal region. A
small extra charge Ismadu for each conver
sation of live minutes over such lines.

On Saturday morning about two o'clock
the cry of lire was heard, and the cause
was the burning of a smoke house on thu
reiir of the lot of O. W. Sterner on Market
stieel, occupied by J. S. Heltz. The
Winona hosu carriage was Iho llrst nnd
only representative of the lire department
on the ground, but Its services wete not
needed. Among the half dozen men who
pulled the carriage was Hohert J. Hurdette,
thu ITawkcye "tunny man." Hegardless of
his dress suit he waded through the mud,
yelled "Fire" and called for "more rope."
He made, many friends while here, by his
nltahlllty nml his exhaustless storehouse of
funny stories.

recovery of quite n sum of money in tlio
following peculiar manner.
Friday night March 23, the house of Mr.
Hiiicc SiitlllT of Sugnrlonf township was
burned and it was supposed that there were
$f;85.00 In gold huint with it as there was
that amount in it ut the time, which belong
ed to his brother W. 1). Sutlltr. Thu next
day search was made for the supposed
burnt money but no trace of it could be
found. Then it was supposed it was stolen
and thu house burnt by thu thief as tliero
was no one nt home on the night of the lire.

On Friday night March 30, W. I). Sutllir
dreamed where his money was and on Sat
unlay morning in company with Mr. Fritz
went to tho spot, und after searching awhile

'A terrible tragedy was enacted this
afternoon iu this borough, and thu actors
In it were two boys named Thomas Trainer
and Perry Gnsklns. Thu onu is but eight
years old, thu other eleven, and their deed
Is tho more remarkable fi urn thu fact that
the causo was of a trivial iiaturo and tho
nssault unprovoked. The hoys were stand.
Ing with several others on Centre street
when Gaskins, whose reputation Is very
bad, told young Trainer to get out of bis
way. Ho fulled to securu what ho directed
to ho done, and pulling out a knife which
he had stolen from his mother and secreted
hi his coat, he plunged It into thu breast of
Trainer, immediately below thu heart.

I left home in Colum
bia county, Pa., March 13th, 1883, with
tho intention of paying my many friends
in the Western states n short visit. I nr.
rived nt South Hcnd, Indiana, on Tues
day, the 14th Inst. Stopped oil with my
cousin, Maggie Locke, fdr live days, on
account of not feeling well. Mr. Locke Is
a well-to-do farmer of Indiana. He accom
panled mo through tho city nnd showed
me nil thu places of note ; we were shown
through Studlbakcr Hro's wagon and car
riage making shops I will say just here
it surpasses anything of the kind in the
United States. Tho guide told me they
averaged a wagon, from tho rough, every
six minutes the day through. I would
advise people going West to call and see
for themselves nnd they will be astonished.
We then visited tho Oliver Plough Factory,
tills was a grand sight too. They make
one hundred ploughs per day.
I left South Hend on Monday, March
10th for Grafton, Neb., via. Chicago, Hur
llngton & Quincy It. It. Took breakfast
at Burlington, Iowa, reached Paclllo June
tion and passed over the Missouri river
into Plnltsmoutli, and arrived at Lincoln
Tuesday evening and stayed nil night at
tho St Charles house. Took the train
Wednesday 1:30 p. m., and arrived nt
Grafton 4i30 p. m. 3fr. H. N. Ammerman
and wife met me nt the station) ho lives
five miles north of Grafton, just ncross the
county line of Fillmore in York county.
Grafton is a thriving little village of about
300 inhabitants 00 miles from Lincoln on
the B. & M. H. n. John Ash, who worked
for John Zaner lu Fishlngcreek, was onu
of the tlrst settlers In Fillmore county; he
has seen some hard times since he first
came here, but Is now in tolerable circum
stances j ho lias n wlfu mid three children
to mnko his home happy. This country" is
destined to make, if not already, the "Eden
of the World" ; products are n little back
ward on account of it being very cold here
which is something new for tills tlmo of
yenr but the weather has changed and
farmers arc very busy getting ready for
planting, ninny of them having 75 acres
for corn. lain stopping with II. N. Am
merman who left Fishlngcreek 5 years ago,
February 1877, he is a well-to-do farmer.

near the Espy depot, last week, parts of a
barrel were found, inside of which was
dust and a set of false teeth. The staves
of the barrel were entirely rolled nway,
