The various Christian emblems wero cov
erved with plaster, ami thin coats of paint
and mosaic which could have offended no
one, wero afterward treated in a similar

by Selim II. and Amurath III. ; but what
might be considered u fortunate neglect was
moro or less tho fate of St. Sophia, until
1817, when it was placed in repiir by tho

of the Sultan Abdul Mejid. This work
lasted through two years, and was com
pleted under great difficulties. Only tho
zeal of Iteschid Pasha, it is Mild, enabled
