tliat very fate planted celery comes to
niiieli ! in fact, when wo havo sot out
any and it was never much - at a
dato later than that usually adopted
by experienced growers, wo havo novcr
had a yield worth growing. At tho
best the stalks wero short And stubby
and tough.
All eeicry-growera aro awaro that tho
ground cannot bo too strong for the
plant. It has a very small root and
can gather only a short supply tif for4
tilizing substances j hence the soil
should bo as rich as possible in order
that thero shall bo within rcaoh of tho
roots a needed amount of nutriment.
Our method liiw uniformly been to
set the plants in single rows, m by it
wo havo always obtained tho largest
stalks, and have found them to blanch
better and to bo tenderer and sweeter.
Perhaps more in quantity can bo ob
tained from planting two, three and
four rows together, but our experience
lias been, so lar as tlio supply tor do
jjuojtltt use i concerned, that tho.single

they would a cabbage or tomato, and
depend upon banking-up tho rows.
This requires a wide space between tho
rows to supply tho neccessary soil,
while any advantages it may possess
wo never could discover. Our plan is
to dig a trench six or eight inches in
depth, aud twelve to fourteen wide,
then loosen tho bottom thoroughly
from six to eight inches more, aud mix
completely this soil with an abundance
of 8hotyvQU--Tottctijbaniyardi iianurojjl

thu morning aud in the evening, and
shielded from tho sun from nine or ten
to five o'clock, until they are firmly es
tablished and well started to grow. In
a fow weeks they should have applied,
onco or twice a week, a liberal dose ot
strong manure water. As tho plants
grow tho soil should bo gradually
drawn up to them ; and any surplus or
weak leaves should bo removed. As
tho plants grow the soil should bo also
increased, always being vorv carfiful
that tho "leader" of tho plant is kept
clear 01 any obstruction. This is par
ticularly important when the plant lias
pretty much its entire growth, and
the "walling"' or banking-iip process
begins.
Uool weather is not backward to
celery. In fact in October tho plant
grows moro vigorously than ai any
other time. Lot it bo remembered
