Straw in the Manger.
It U not nt nil difficult to rot down n
straw iillc, and by so doing Rorminnto
nnd kill most of tho wood need contain
ed therein i by making tho slack very
Hat, so ns to catch much water, it rota
rapidly, and so soon aa It gets
thoroughly wetted, by rqiillng, It soon
heats nnd decays. Iltit tho stack or
nilo of straw at best oidy contains car
bon nnd silica in quantities, nnd these
nro tho most common nnd least valtuv
bio of nil tho elements of plant food.
Tho quantity of potash, nitrogen nnd
phosphorio acid Is very small indeed,
mid thcro is no method by which this
pilo of straw oan in any way bo chang
ed into manure containing any moro of
theso element than were in the staok
originally. If wo tread this pllo down it
will only bo a pilo of wet straw, and if
wo rot over so thoroughly it will bo a
smaller pilo of thoroughly rotten staw,
and at best llttlo better than bo much
swamp muck.
It is only by tho uso of straw as nn
absorbent, and as a coarsojfood for fat
toning animals, and by using with it
much rich food, such us corn, bran, oil
or cotton seed meal, etc., that wo can
change it into a manure that shall
really bo very valuablo to uso, and that
will largely increaso tho crops whoro
uscu. vomust uoi expect that wo
oan raiso crops of crain vear after vear.
and sell tho most valuablo part, nnd by
tiny method turn tho straw into a man
ure that shall keep up tho fertility of
tho soil, if wo manure only with straw
wo must expect to grow only straw
upon tho land.
It is unfortunato for any man to bo
so situated that ho can not afford to
raiso stock to oat up and tread down
tho straw, and to bo fed riohcr foods,
so as to make a full supply of richer
manure. With any system of farmintr
wo now have, tho land must sooner or
later becorao exhausted and coaso to
yield proBtablo crops if wo fail to re
turn to the soil the essential elements
of plant food removed in such crops..

Poultry.
llov. J. M. llunlting, Jamaica L. I
says : I have had tho caro of poultry
most of the last seventy years. I buy
most of their feed. I find from keep
ing n debit nud credit account, (this no
count now by me,) that for every dol
lar 1 pay for feed I get two dollars'
worth of eggs. My neighbor, Mr.
Cashier Crane, says it is a good invest
ment. I had a dominlck hon which
had a lino brood of chlckem and then
laid eighly nice eggs before she offered
to sit ngain. I hava n yellow Iirahma
now laying which has exceeded that
number. I have no trouble with hen
lice, as I Bcatier air-slacked lime in
theirnes(H, on their perches and about
tho hennery. I have not lost a chicken
with gaps in many years, as I feed
them onward from hatching with
cracked corn dally. This keeps tho
worms out of their throats. Somo of
my iK-ighbois who had lost forty in a
short time took my hint and lose no

The Blue and the Gray.
In tho Bpring of 1863, two great
armies were encampod on cither side
of tho Rappahannock, one dressed in
blue, the other in gray. As twilight
fell, tho bands on tho Union sido began
to play "Tho Star,SpangledJianncr,
and "llally Round tho Flag,"- ahdih'at1
-ii .r. ,1.
cnaiiengo oi musio was lanou up py
those on the other side, and they re
sponded with "The Bonnio Blue Flag,"
and "Away Uown bouth in Uixie.
It was bomo in upon tho soul of a sin
gle soldier in ono of those bands of
musio to begin a sweeter and more
tender air, and slowly as ho played it
there joined in a sort of chorus tno in
struments on the Union side, until
finally a groat and mighty chorus
swelled up and down our army:
"Home, Sweet Home." Whon they
had finished there was no challengo
yonder, for every band upon the far
ther shore had taken up tho lovely air,
so attuned to all that is holiest and
dearest, nnd one great chorus of tho
two great hosts went up to God ; and
when tboy bad huished, from tbo boys
in gray came a challenge: "Three
cheers for horaol" and thoy went up,
resounding through tho skies, from
both sides oi the nver. "bometbing

tho stains of powder." Argonaut.
