other men in mining iron ore, near Mr,
Armstrong's. A large bulk of ore and dirt
became loosened on account of ''ho wet pon.

made that all the fire apparatus belonging
to the Town ho disposed of, but a motion
to adjourn cut off discussion.
No proposition of any kind was made by
those who voted ngalnst tho contract, and
the natural inference is that they do not
propose tho town shall liavu a public water
supply during tlio present year. If this is
tho intention tlio majority in tlie council Is
not only doing itself a great Injustice but
it Is making thu Town net In very had
faith toward thu Water Company. Hy ill
reetlon of the Town authorities tire pines
were put lu, after being located by a coin-
inltlce of thu council. A contract was
entered into for six months for 800, and
now nil that is asked is $1000 a year.
Whether this Is too much we aru not pre
pared to say, but it is less than $1000 a
year, nnd it is less than 0 per cent, on the '
cost of the llru protection. If there Is to
be no water, insurance policies taken at
ow rates because of tlie water supply, will
hu cancelled, and higher rates demanded ;
property owners who now pay the bulk of
the taxes will bu compelled to pav more
nsiiraucu than their taxes would amount
while tho man who pays only nn occu
pation tax would not tic affected one way
or the other. To refuse to contract at all
for water, under the idea that such action
s in the Interest of the laboring lpau is a
mistake, nnd to administer the affairs of
tho corporation In that way is not economy.
Sarali Gross Convicted.
The trial of Mrs. Sarah Gross in Court
last week on the chargu of having altumpt-
d to produce an abortion on thu person of
Mrs. Charles Krug, resulting hi tlie death
of tho latter, excited much interest. Thu
evidence though mostly of a circumstantial
character, was overwhelming, and the Jury
found but little trouble in finding a verdict
of gullty, in less than an hour. Mrs. Krug
lied at tlie house of Mrs. Gross, on the 23d
of February last. As theru were many
uspiclous circumstances Mrs. Gross was
arrested on thu Sunday following, and has
been in jail ever since for want of bail. The
evidence nt the trial showed that she had
sent word to Mrs. Krug, making proposl-

sister, went to see Mrs. Gross for the pur
pose of having an operation performed ;
that the two went up stairs together leav-

her. Mrs. Gross told several conflicting
torics about the cause of Mrs. Krug's visit

fortunate victim of n strong chain of cir
cumstances. On Wednesday afternoon
shu was brought Into court and sentenced
to pay a fine of $500 and costs of prosecu
tion and undergo imprisonment in thu
astern penitentiary for four years. Jerry
Gross, the husband, is a hard working
stone mason, and there is no reason to;
