They left tho Jeanetto in tho first cutter after the sinking of the ship, June 1!), 1881, and endeavored to reach tho coast of Russian Siberia, which lay 200 miles southward. The seamen, Noros and Nindcmann. pursued a different route from tho others, and succeeded in reaching tho nearest Russian settlement, Their rescue was reported four months ago, probably about the tunes that Da Long and his party perished. Tho Jiodoers, a vessel sent out by tho government in search of tho ,Tean- nette, was burned and it is said that thirty out of thirty seven persons on board the vessel wcro lost. A third vessel has started to rescue tho surviv ors of the Jlodyers. It seems as though a sufficient number of vessels and lives havo been lost in tho exploration of tho Arctic regions to cause a halt in tho effort to find the North pole. Tho only result of all Arctic expeditions lias been to prove conclusively that those regions cannot be navigated. A Oashier'i i. SI ItPKN IltSAlTKAUANTi: 01' Wll.l.IAM S. A' TS0Vf, Ol'll.t.tAMSI'Otir Till; njNits sAvt:. William S. Watson, cashier of tho West Branch National Bank of Wil- liamsport, ono of the oldest and sound est banking institutions in this part of tho btate, has suddenly disappeared. On Wednesday evening, last week at a lato hour, ho visited tho liouso ot 1'. H. Glenn, the first teller, and. handing him tho keys of tho safe, said ho was going away anil would not be back bo lorotho lollowing elay at noon, and before the teller could interrogate him further ho hnd disappeared. No mcs- Bago was left for his father, Oliver Watson, tho president of tho bank, or anv member of his own family. Ho eliel not tako a largo amount of money with him. On tho 1st inst. ho had eli awn his salary for April, amounting to $220. lie also had under his charge a fund of 82o,000 belonging to his father, from which ho drew S.'i.OOO, leaving his individual note for it. This is believed to bo nil the money he took with him. It nppcars that n couplo of years ago ho became intiiuato with a woman named Annies Tyler, residing in that city His relations with her caused trouble at his home, but he kept up his attentions. A few days ago tho woman went to New York. It is believed Watson followed her, for on Friday night a letter was received from him, dated Now York, in which ho stateei that things wcro getting too warm for liim nnd he would sail on Thursday next for South America, and that he did not want to sec anybody from Willianisport soon again. A meeting of the directors of tho bank was held, when an examination of tho books was made and tho accounts of the abscond ing cashier were found all right. Oliver Watson, tho father of tho cashier, is one of tho oldest, most respected and wealthiest citizens of WiUiamsuort. During his long and busy life ho has accumulated an estato which will prob ably reach a million and a half of dol lars. Ho is an invalid, having been confined to his room all winter, only being ablo to appear upon tho streets once or twice during that time. His son, tho absconding cashier, wa9 virtual ly the president of the bank and at tended to nearly all tho business, no was so highly regarded by his father that ho left nearly all the financial duties of tho office to him and he would undoubtedly have succeeded his father as president of tho bank when the latter retired. So much faith was reposed in him by his father that somo time ago ho deeded him the old homestead that city, where ho resided. Aside from tho common reports tho conduct of the cashier is in many re spects a mystery, and it is believed that thero must be something moro serious yet to bo discovered which caused him to, act so precipitately and foolishly. Ho was in good financial condition himself. He received a good salary for his services and was not in straitened circumstances. His father and mother are very much distressed over his sud den and strange disappearance, and his wife and live children, although par tially estranged from him, aro reported as nearly distracted. Boys in the Mines. 20,000 WORK INI! IN I'KSXSYI.VANIA. Of the 80,000 persons employed in tho work of mining and preparing an thracite coal for market, says a Penn sylvania newspaper correspondent, at least 20,000 aro boys, whoso ages range between nino and eighteen years. Somo enter tho breaker to pick slate at tho tender ago of six or seven. In most cases this is tho result of a desperate need growing out of the sudden death of the father upon whose labor tho family depended solely for support by ono of the many accidents so common in tho coal mines. Ono docs not know whether it would bo moro cruel to per mit or prevent this on a oloso cxamina. tion of tho circumstances. These lisping little workmen, for whom tho battle-of life begins at tho very cradle, havo to aid in supporting younger brothers, and sisters, who wero suddenly left father- less, aim wnose tenner years eniiiio them lo tho solo attention of their mothers. For tho employment of child labor, under such circumstances, there may bo somo excuso in a great individ ual community; but it is an iron fate that compels it. There are, however. a great many parents in Pennsylvania who, for tho sake of tho paltry earnings, send their children to work in the coal breakers as slato pickers at an early, age, and tor these there is no palliation. Havingoiice entered upon such a career, tho boy may bo said to bo bound to the business tor life, and he goes through the regular stages like an automaton. f lo picks slate until ho gets too big tor tho screen room. Then ho considers himself fortunato if ho is "promoted" to drive a initio in the mines a task calling for no small share of patience, skill and courage. Then, in course of time, ho becomes a laborer, and when ho is well advanced in years he may attain to the responsible position of miner unless in tho meantime he is crushed to death by a fall of roof, kicked by a mulo or miuee.ed between the care." Uo takes all these risks, and more. His opportunities, by ivason of his calling, aro generally very meagre for self-improvement. If ho attends tho public schools it is usually during somo peiiod of suspension in mining, when everybody in tho region is unhap py and but little thought is given to learning. Of course, when children aro thus shut out from all reasonable chances for schooling it is not to bo ex poctul that they can becomu competent m any sphern calling for moro judgment than is required by tho ordinary elay laborer, nndjbut few lnakosullicient pro gress to bo competent as foremen.
