Hon. J. 1'. Wickcrsham, for many
years tho Superintendent of Public
Instruction in this State, has been ap
pointed charge d' affairs nt Copenha
gen, Denmark. It is a position with a
salary of $5,000 attached.
A law of tho United States revised
statutes will inako it lively for any one
who fancies he can fill up the holes in
a punched coin for tho purpose of pass
ing it off on his unsuspecting neighbor.
Tho penalty is 83,000 or imprisonment
for five years, nt the discretion of tho

Judgo llolford who has been selected
by tho Israelites of the United States
had an interview with President Arthur
last week in reference to tho prosecu
tion of the Jews in Russia. The Presi
dent gavo Judge Bclford all tho en
couragement that ho could ; that ho
would endeavor, with strict regard to
courtesy, to gain for them a measure of
freedom nnd protection.
W. M. Brcslin, editor of tho Leban
on Advertiser has been mentioned by
quite a number of tho leading journals
of tho Statu as a Democratic candidate
for Congressman-at-largc. He is a
life longDemocrat and Ins dovotion to
the party has been untiring. Thoso
who havo the pleasuro of his acquaint
anco say that ho is able, faithful, and
thoroughly honest, and would make an
excellent Congressman. Wo would
support him with great pleasure.
An Anti-Chinese Convention was
held in San Francisco, Cal, on Friday
last and adopted a plan of action which
includes a scheme to divide the Pacific
coast into districts which shall bo no
tified to removo tho Chineso within a
specified timo. Failing such action,
the district is to be proclaimed danger
ous, and peaceably disposed citizens to
bo warned to abandon it, and if tho
Chinese aro still harbored in the district
tho leaguo is to removo them by force
using as little lorco as may be nec
essary, until the country is rid of
them.
Tho Malley boys are on trial at New
Haven, Connecticut, with Blanche
Douglass, for tho murder of a young
woman named Jennio Cramer. She
was seen in company with tbo accused,
uud was soon afterwards found dead in
the water. Tho prosecution aro trying
to show that criminal intimacy existed
between the victim nnd tho boys, and
that tho girl, Douglass, was a party to
it That alter their purpoao had been
accomplished tuo girl was lirst poison
ed and thrown into tho water after her
death. Tho defenso will attempt an
alibi, and undertake to show that the
presence of arsenic in tho body is ac
counted for by tbo fact that tho girl
was in tho habit of taking it for her
complexion and that sho committed
suicido by drowning herself. The
trial will bo a Ion" one.
Dr. Lamson was executed in London
on the morning of April 28th., for tho
murder of his brother-in-law, Percy M.
John. Lamson was an American but
had spent much of his life in Paris. Ho
poisoned his victim, who was a student
at an English school, by administering
aconite, ine victim was tuo heir to
largo sum of money and Dr. Lamson
desired to put him out of tho way in
order to get possession of the funds.
.Lamson had tbo reputation ol beinp; in
sane and soveral of his near American
relatives were also insane. Americans
endeavored to show causo why Lam
son should not bo hanged, but the ev
idence of insanity submitted to the
English government was not favora
bly received. Dr. Lamson was born
in America and at one timo practised
medieino in .Lancaster, i'a.
THE NATIONAL BANKS7
Tho charters of 892 National Banks
will expiro bofore tho end of next Feb
ruary and among tho pseuuo financiers
in Congress it is feared there aro some
who will portinaeiously oppose tho re
newal ol these charters, liauks aro a
commercial necessity and if they are
compelled to withdraw their circulation
ana close up their altairs it would sub
ject tho business interests of tho country
to serious embarrassment, and might
uoasiblv result in n disastrous nanm.
According to their recent reports theso
banks have loaned S150.000.000 to
business men, they havo outstanding
$08,000,000 in notes, all of which
would havo to be called in during tho
next six months. On tins subject the
Hnrrisburg Patriot says : "If their I
charters are not renewed these banks
will be obliged to call in their loans in
order to be able to deposit a sufficient
Hum with tho government in greenbacks
to redeem their outstanding notes.
They will begin to call in their loans
early in tho coming fall, if Congress
should fail to provide for their recti nr
tcr. Tho distress to business which
would bo caused by so sudden a with
drawal of their loans is incalculable.
Certain and inevitable bankruptcy will
follow so disastrous a blow to tho bor
rowing class. Congress can avoid tho
threatened calamity by prompt and de
cided notion."
A Widow's Elghta
In tho opinion filed by Judge Trim
koy, of tho Supremo Court, in tho case
of Daniel Hupp, of Lehigh county,
who bad obtained a verdict against tho
Lehigh Iron Company for tho killing
of his Bon, who was nineteen years old.
Tho boy was married. His wife ef
fected n compromise with tho company
and received a compensation for her
husband's death. Sir. Hupp brought
suit for tho loss of his son and tho ser
vices of the latter, which ho was en
titled to during tho rest of his minority.
An appeal was taken from tho verdict,
wliioh was in his favor. Justico Trun
koy in Ids opinion says that tho ci renin
tances of tho young innn, who lived
apart from his parents and did not con
tribute to their support, wero stich that
thoy Buffered no pecuniary loss. Tho
utatuto prefcis a widow, and whero n
minor leaves a wifo or children his par
eulB havo no right, Tho first person
entitled to such damages U the wifo or
husband j next tho children if .any, and
lastly tho parents.
LUZERNE REPUBLICANS.
It seems that Mr. Orr nnd Congress
man Scranton wero unable to deliver
tho goods promised Cameron, in Lu
zcrno county. In consideration of tho
Wllkosbarro post oflloo they wero to
seo that inachiuo delegates were sent
to tho Hepubliean State Convention.
Tho senatorial conferees met at Wilkes
Barro last week, and these nro among
tho resolutions adopted!
Ho It resolved, that it Is tho unanimous
sentiment of the Republican1! of tho Ulst
Hcnntorlnl DlMrlet that tho nomination of
Hcnvcr, 1 law 1c nnd u wholo Statu ticket ac
cordlnt to n programme determined upon
lone prior to the meetings of the convention,
without popular unnvn.s or party express
Ion as to tho fitness or nvnllnblcnuss of the
selected, would bo not only Impolitic, but a
positive Insult to tho Inteligoiico of the He
publican voters of Pennsylvania.
That wo condemn the unlt-rulo methods
and selfish political actions of Senator J. 1).
Unmeron as unrcpubllcan, unpatriotic.- op
pressive, and subversive of the best Inter
ests of tho party.
That we commend the conduct of Sena
tor Mitchell In his efforts to restore wise
counsels nnd united, harmonious action to
tho conduct of party nlfalrs.
That leadership and not dictatorship Is
essentlnl to party success and supremacy.
That wo hereby Instruct the delegates
from this district to so act nt the convention
ns to express our reprobation of the arro
gance which has attempted to turn our
State Convention from a representative,
consulting body Into a mere machine.
So called independent Republicans
nro talking nfter this fashion every
where, but every man of them will turn
in and support tho State ticket just as
Cameron makes it. bee if thoy don t.
STALWARTS AND INDEPENDENTS.
Tho two branches of tho Hepubliean
party. Stalwarts and Independents, each
side represented by a committee of five,
met at tho Continental Hotel in Phil
adelphia on Saturday and Monday last,
for tho purpose of effecting a com
promise and adjustment of their diffi
culties, if possible. Tho Independents,
headed by Charles S. Wolf, demanded
tho withdrawal of General Beaver's
name as candidate for Governor, bc
causo he is tho machine candidate.
Tho only thing done by tho conferenco
was tho adoption of a lot of resolutions
to which nobody will pay any attention.
The Hnrrisburg Patriot says: Two
things may bo learned from tho result
of tho Independent-Stalwart conferenco
in riuladelphia : 1. That tho stalwart
leaders are unwilling to resign their
control of tho political power of the
State on any consideration ; 2. That
tho Independents made a blunder in
conferring with tho politicians whoso
overthrow is their professed purpose.
Tho platform of principles lecommcnd
ed to tho Stalwart State convention by
the joint conferenco consists ot tho
merest glittering generalities which
any political convention might adopt
as a bait for unwary voters. If tho
Stalwart body wdiich will assemblo in
this city on tho tenth inst., should ac
cept this platform, as it probably will,
few people will bo deceived by tho
transparent device. It will not bo tho
first timo that wolves havo appeared in
sheep's clothing, or that a Republican
convention has kept tho word of
promise to tho ear to break it to tho
hope. Why, if Cameron, Quay and
company deemed it expedient to incor
porate the Ten Commandments, tho
Lord's Prayer and the Sermon on the
Mount in their platform they would
not hesitate a moment. They would
do it with as pious an air as that of a
gambler at a luneral or a bawd at a
christening. Platform forsooth ! Thoy
would
"Resolve and rc-rcsolve and die the same."
But even if tho stalwart leaders would
live up to tho pledges thev aro so ready
to make they would find means to do-
feat tin- rciorms which tho indopen
dents profess to seek. Their creatures
occupy tho offices and cannot be re
moved. Their lieutenants control tho
local organizations through tho influ
enco of ollicial position and cannot bo
dislodged from power. Tho machinery
or tho county conventions would tliero
foro bo run in their interest with but
little less jar than that of tho present
system ol electing stato delegates by
county committees. X'hilndelpbia, lor
instance, held a convention last year
but tho voice oi ine independents was
unheard. It was smothered by Gas
Trust and other official influences. The
pledge that delegates to Stato conven
tions shall be elected in the manner in
which candidates for seats in the Legis
lature aro chosen will not help tho In
dependents a whit, as tho history of Leg
islative nominations clearly proves.
There has not been a timo during tho
wholo existenco of tho Republican or
L'a.ination in this Stato when tho Cam
eron intluenco could not dictato a largo
majority of its candidates for seats in
the Legislature. Even when Thad-
deus Stephens and Governor Curtin
united their forces in opposition to
Cameron tho latter was victorious.
How idle nnd foolish it is, therefore,
to bono for tho defeat of Cameron in
tho election of delegates upon this Leg-
lslativo plan now that ho lias supremo
control ot tho machinery ol tho paityl
i no independents blundered in con
ferring at all with tho elements thoy
denounce as corrupt and unworthy of
public confidence. Thoy descended to
the level of tho machine politician when
thoy consented to parley with him.
They blundered in failing to break oil
all negotiations upon tho refusal
of tho Stalwarts to take down
their slate and agree to a convention to
bo chosen by tho people. Thoy blun
dered in assenting to a platform wliioh
tho stalwarts will claim binds tho
parties endorsing it to a support of
tho Stalwart ticket. Nevertheless tho
Independents may recover their former
position if at their approaching Stato
convention thoy declare against tho
Stalwart candidates on the ground that
their selection was mado by methods
opposed to tho system and principles
endorsed by the conference. That
loop-hole ot escapo is left them. It is
true, too, that only the position and in
lluences of thoso Independents who par
ticipated personally in tho conference
aro effected by their unfortunate mis
takes. The body of tho following is
unharmed by tho elforts of their blun
ders. Tho war against tho bosses
will bo prosecuted with greater vigor
than before and if the old leadeis fail
tho occasion will produce others who will
profit by the experience of llio.io who
nave fallen in tho fray.
