From tho Ozark Mountains of Missouri, a
chain of hills extends Into Kansas, nmklug n

State, tho laiuU on either sltlo being
drained by tho Kansts and tho Arkansas
rivers. Kansas has n hcnlthftil climate, nnd
tlio InliAbltauts nro said to bo freo from eon.
sumption and malarious disonscs. Strong
winds hweop over tho prairies, keeping
them cool oven In tho hottest foason. Tho
Stato has thrco rain belts, tho eastern, tho
middle, and tho western, tho nvcmgo annual
rainfall In theso belts being, In tho order
nliovo named, thirty-seven, twenty.foiir nud
nineteen Inches. Tho temperature Is sub

alluvial earth Is twcnly.fivo feet deep. Tlio
forests glow In belts along tho rivers and
smaller strenuis. Grass of good quality
grows naturally on tho prairies, nnd culti
vated grasses flourish thcro luxuriantly.
Kansas still has wild 1m Haloes, wild horses,
elks oud antelopes. It lia) nUo panthers,
black bears, and wolves. Illtumluous co.il
is mined in Kansas, and thcro nro deposits
of lead and zinc. Among tho Important

Stato havo only begun to bo developed.
Tlio area now under cultivation is suid to bo
less than threo per cent, of tho tillable, land.
Dairy farming is another principal occupa
tion in Kansas, and tho cultivation of fruit
is pursued with great success. Kansas has
n Stato University, n Normal School, an
agricultural college, and n system of com.

which it shares with other Western States,
is n population uumcroiu enough to develop
its powers.

Romans, nnd, precisely, Porta l'ia, through
which Victor Emmanuel and bis nnny en
tcrcd in 1870 thcro stands, halfway bo
tween two waysido eating nnd drinking
houses, a littlo church, dedicated to St.
Agues, a young virgin martyr, who suffered
death rather than bo married to tho son of
tho Governor of Rome, who was dying of
lovo for her. Sho was only thirteen years of
age; but girls of that ngo nro women in
Italy. So sho answered his protestations
of lovo by saying : "I am affianced to him
whom angels serve, and whom tho sun and
moon adoro."
Sho was then threatened says her biogra
pher with being publicly dishonored in nn
infamous place, and then to bo killed in a
most cruel way. "My Divino Spouse,"
sho answered "tho God of purity, whom I
sirve will deliver mo from your impious
designs I" Sho was then thrown on n burn
ing pile; but, laughing and singing praises
to God, sho defied tho Jlamcs, which could
not bo mado to burn her.
Sho was then made to walk naked through
tho btreets of Home, nnd was nlso exposed
in n placo of bad reputo tho Agoual Cir
cus. Thcro her hair grow miraculously long
nnd covered lier liko n clonk, and tho Gov
craoi'sson was struck with bliudnoss. At
last sho was beheaded. Tho placo of bad
leputo where sho was exposed was nfter
wards transformed into n chapel, aud over
it was built ono of tho most beautiful
churches in ltomo. It is not there, how
over, that sho was buriod. Tho Christians
of that day took her body and buried it in
a catacomb outeido of ltomo. Tho cata
comb beara her name, nnd over her tomb
was built a splendid church during Cou6tan
lino's reign, nnd this church was restored
by Taul III. in tho sixteenth century, and
still later by Pius IX. It is in this littlo
church that on every anniversary of her
death nro brought on cushions two littlo
iambs decorated with Uowers and ribbons.
They nro blessed, nnd then they nro taken'
to tho Pope, who scuds them to tho Convent
ot St. Cecilia, whero they aro shorn of their
wool, which is afterwards woven iuto tho

Tho method of marching troops is a sub.
ject of no less Interest to tho soldiers of tho
Stato than to thoso who tread tho frontier
wnrpath. Tho lato Gen. Upton, present,
on hot day, at n review of a division of Iho
New York National Guard, was admiring
tho picturesque features of tho display, tho
color and excitement mid glitter, as tho
masses swept by tho reviewing stand
Looking toward tho rear of tho column
over tho miles of Hashing steel, ho noticed
that tho formation was tlio samo company
front, elbows touching, uniform step, quick
time whilo in front the paco was already
beginning to tell on tho plucky but over-
driven men, m shown by whito Hps, staring
eyes, diluted nostrils aud pautiug chests.
Turning to it friend, ihu Geiieral said,
"This is sheer cruelly." JIad ho kuown
that somo of these leglnients would march
two or three miles further, In tho same
close order nnd regular step, his wander aud
compassion would havo been unbounded, It
is n grievous mistako and sometimes a
crime to keep men biucod up continuously
for such a distance j as well might tho re
viewing stand bo ns long as tho route,
Well-seasoned regulars nro never nbusod in
that way; why should occasionally ovcrclsed
militia bo so ill-treated? There, can bo but
ono imsvver to tho query, I fear "It Is our
custom," v lieuovcr troops nro taken out
side their armories tho rules prescribed for
marches should govern. In caso of a re.
view, the route step should bo taken until
within a very short dMauce of tho loviow
ing point j tho uuoveu nnd slippery stouos
of city streets inako tho uniform step diffi
cult nnd wearisome, nud tho route step a
welcome relief, I am suro that tho change
would bo appreciated, not only by tho sol
tilers, but also by tho curb-stone critics, as
(jh lug variety to tho spcctucloi besides, tho
incu would bo kept fresher aud perform with
greater caso tho more precise movements
when ordered, uud that, you will agree with
mo, is a sufficient reason. Ocn. JMtu
