candidate, what probability is there of

can never be counted upon to do duty in
tho Democratic rankfi.and might as well
be eliminated from estimates ot tlio

was not creditable to the Democracy nor

THE STAIt KOUrK CASKS.
Tho prosecution met with a reverse
last week, but whether this will be pro
ductive of more, than a temporary stop
to tho proceedings remains to be seen.

Owimr to an adioitrnnieut of tho irand
jury an indictment could not be procured
beforo tho statute of limitations applied.
It was therefore determined to proceed
by what is known in English law, as in
formation. This proceeding has been
decided by Judge Cox to be improper,
and ho therefore sustained the motion to
expel the information from tho files of
tho court, and discharged tho defendants.
Tho muddle has given rise to much acri
monious comment and tho prosecution is
severely criticised for attempting a du
bious method for bringing the cases into
court. As, however, it is promised that
tho trials will take place without due
loss of time, it may bo as well to with
hold criticism and await further (level
opmcnts.
UUITKAU'S TRIAL.
The selection of a jury to try the as
sassin Uiiiteau began on Alomlay. llio
panel was exhausted after five men had
been accepted. Guiteau attempted to
read a statement in spite of tlio opposi
tion of his counsel, and subsequently
gave tho manuscript to a reporter but it
was returned. Tho assassin evidently is
sane enough to try and get his effusions
into print on all occasions. Sir. Itobinson,
one of tho counsel for the defence asked
for more time, when Guiteau addressed
the court and said ho was ready to pro
ceed Willi tho case, lie then perempt
orily ordered Mr. Robinson to withdraw.
After some trouble Guiteau was induced
to take his seat and remain quiet. If the
man is insane it is in tho desire for no
toriety' he constantly exhibits.
On Tuesday four more jurors wero ac
cepted and sworn. There were no inci
dents of moment to chronicle. The at
tendance in couit was very large, as it
had been on the preceding day.
The three remaining jurors were
choicn on Wednesday. The full jury is
as follows: John P. Ilamlcn, restaurant
keeper; Fied. W. Ilrandeuburg, cigar
dealer; Henry J. Bright, retired mer
chant, Charles J. Stewart, merchant;
Thomas II. l.ongly, grocer; .Samuel F.
Ilobbs, plasterer; George W. Gates, ma
chinist; Ralph Wormly, colored, laborer;
W. II. ISrowner, commission merchant;
Thomas llieuliu, iron worker, and Jo.
seph Prather, commission merchant.
Guiteau has issued another address,
this time to the leg.il fraternity, and asks
for assistance in his defense.
Mahone's postmaster at Lynchburg,
