Cause!) of itonp In Fowls.
In the trcntmuiit of fowls ono tllsenso
must not bo mistaken for another. For
inat.nncu tho nnnio of "clilokun cholcrn"
i HppHcd tu!to fri'qticntly to many nil
moiita that aro strnjilo, or merely dlnar
rangements of the internal organs that
may bo easily remedied by diot or place,
ltoup is tho worst atlliution of the jioul
try yard. It may bo pronounced tho
root of nil diseases. It proceeds from
tho simplest causes, as n sudden cold
contracted from a current of air or un
duo exposure. At ono tlmo tho writer
sold a cook for breeding purposes in
A pi it. IIo was a lino bird, and had been
kept under cover with n southern glass
exposure, and was not accustomed to tho
outsido atmosphere. Tho consequenco
was a sudden cold, proceeding from tho
change and neglect received. A few
days later a note was received from the
customer, convoying tho information of
tho fowl's Illness, further remarking that
lie was unlit for use, ns ho was diseased.
All animals suffer greatly from change
of home, not only from tho difference of
treatment and feed as well as quarters,
but also from homo sickness. Fowls
suffer from tho samo cause. But this
was a caso of downright cruelty. Tho
fowl had not been hardened.
"When shipping fowls, or selling them,
without having been seen by the pur
chaser, every prticular concerning the
treatmont knovn to tho seller of
tho birds, should previously bo forward
ed, so that accidents and sickness may
bo avoided. This is only just and hon
orable, more especially In tho spring of
tho year before the fowls aro accustomed
to the outsido atmosphere. When pur
chasers see tho fowls this is' unnecessary,
as they aro ablo to take notes when vis
iting the premises, nud act accordingly.
No , censure, when such is the case,
can bo attached to tho seller, in
case of failure in tho purchaser. Fowls
also suffer greatly from transporta
tion. Tho fatigue of tho journey, un
natural position and irregularity of feed
inc. lnrcelv servo to disturb tho equilib
rium, and they fall a ready prey to colds
which if neclccted, run into roup, which
in tho advanced stato is incurable. It
assumes manv forms, and is oftentimes,
no doubt, termed cholera. It should bo
avoided as tho worst distemper that af
flicts our domestic birds. It may bo ad
vancintr bv Blow staees and unob
served, until tho victim is much reduced.
At other times it nuts on a more acute,
but not so dangerous appearance On
. the arrival of fowls from long distances,
- c:tru slioulu be exercised in tno nrst feed
ing. It is naturally supposed that fowls
nrciatmued and hunirry and will creed
ily devour what is set before them. They
should have sou, scalded, and easily di
gested food, and bo placed at onco in
warm, comfortable quarters. If this
precaution was always taken there would
be less cause tor complaint and less cen
sure of tho seller. Bad food will also
pioduco what is termed chicken cholera.
Tho poultry business is a great and
still increasing one. A country placo
is not stocked without them nnd to keep
them in health nnd profit is no small un
dertaking. It will not do to allow them
to shift for themselves altogether.
The garden and fruit as well as
flower' beds, will suffer, henco they must
bo controlled in their movements. Con
stant closo confinement will not answer.
Still fowls will thrive and bo profitable
if confined during tho larger half of the
day, but they must bo supplied with all
tho requirements of nature, and fresh
clean water must bo given. Fowls often
get run down, and require a change of
food; especially laying hens, which are
largo consumers. Giving tho best caro
daily will keep them from eating feath
ers, and promote health and activity. If
tho weather bo cool, a little pepper may
bo given, but do not givo too much to
hens that aio laying eggs for hatching.
In that case they are apt to be unfcrtil
ized. Before doctoring ailing fowls bo
certain of tho diiliculty, as harm is done
by administering doses for a disease that
may not exist at tho time. Country
Gentleman,
Goon Faiuiimi. It is ono sign of a
good farmer if ho prizes mauure. It
does not require a good farmer to raise
bountiful crops on a farm already rich,
but the art lies in so managing tho farm
that it will produce good crops every
yt ar without losing in fertility. A man
may make money from his farm, and be
wasteful of fertilizers, but he is not a
good fnrmer, for ho is constantly running
his land into debt which it will require
years of good tillage to overcome. Good
farming consists of such management
as will make the farm produco the
best possiblo results without deteriora
ting the soil. This can only be accom
plished by a rigid economy in the
making nnd uso of manure, and a sys
tematio rotation of crops that, will bo tho
least exhaustive to tho soil. It is not al
ways tho best farmer who grows the
most produce from his acres any more
than it m tho most successful merchant
who sells tho most goods. A farm may
yithl abundantly of exhaustive crops for
a few years and return to tho owner n
handsome income, but there must be a
reaction sooner or later, for soil cannot
produce crops without food any more
than a cow can give milk without feed
nnd drink. "Wo must livo according to
our means and practice the samo rule in
our farming
Broken Limus. A practical stock
grower advises his brother farmers, not
to be in a hurry to destroy any animal
that may break a leg, for by means of
plaster of Paris (not land plaster) and
some bagging strips, tho limb may be
set and bupported until tho fractured
bono unites again. His plan lias been,
both with calves and sheep, to wind the
strips of bagging about tho broken limb,
plaster aver with calcined plaster mixed
to a thin paste, wind another over that
and apply more plaster, tho leg being
fastened to splints gf wood until tho
plaster sets. The animal will limp around
for a fow days on three legs, but recov
ers without blemish.
A minister was soliciting aid to for

who refused him with tho reply, "I don't
believe in foreign missions. I want what

"How far down do you own!"

having in tho coureo of his vilo existence
committed nloue, or in conjunction with
others, cigthy murders, ami also of hav
ing escapoil no tower than live times
from Siberia, lie was born near Ismail
about tho year 1785, and appears to have
been of Kalmuck descent, of herculean
proportions nud of great physical
strength. After serving his term as a
soldicr, lio adopted brigandngo as his pro
fession, nnd with a band of three or tour
scoro roughs, kept tho wooded part of
llessarnbia nnd oven tho country for
many miles round Odessa during several
years in such a stato of terror, that tho
police rather than arrest htm lived on
friendly terms with him. At last nbout
tho year 18.r0, a polico superintendent
named KhorzhcvsKy undertook to cap
ture him, and surrounding a low road
sido inn kept by ono Keesveloff nnd
known to bo tho resort of thieves nnd
robbers, succeeded in doing so nfter a
desperate encounter, in which fifteen
men altogether on both sides were killed
or wounded. For this servico Khorz
hevsky received tho order of St. Vladi
mir, a distinction not so often bestowed
in those days as in thoso. Tho old litis
sian criminal codo being then in exist
ence, Tehoomak remained in piison nine
years before being brought to trial. In
18.VJ, however, ho was condemned to
twenty years hard labor in Siberia and
to bo flogged. Five years later ho es
caped back to Odessa, but was again
caught, tried and sent into captivity. In
1 809 he ngain found his way back to
Odessa, was again caught, and after be
ing kept in prison till 1871, was retired
nnd sent back to Siberia, but tho very
same year ho mnnnged to get away from
there whilo being transferred from
Irkutsk to Kercusk, and in 187-1
was recaptured at Fllzavctgiad,J in
this covernment (Kherson), and for tho
fourth timo tried nnd removed toSiberia.
A couple of weeks ago he appeared here
acain, thus mak in ft the fifth cscapo from
Siberia, nud being caught in an attempt
to steal a wagon and a pair of horses in
one of tho German colonics in this
neighborhood, tho sturdy colonists, fol
lowing their usual practice of takinir
tho law into theirown hnnds in such cases
after belaboring him and a companion
of his, bound their arms and lees with
cords, brought them to Odessa and hand
ed them over to tho prison authorities.
Tho two criminal had been so roughly
handled, howover, as to necessitate their
removal to tho prison infirmary, where
Tehoomak died two days after, seven of
his ribs having been broken. It is pro
posed to send his brain to Dr. Benedekt
of Vienna, for examination, that gentle
man being reputed to have devoted much
attention to the brains of notorious
criminals.

Ambition, competition and ovcr-excr
