If chetwiwnnking is tho leading
dairy inteiest, then ti breed of cattle
nhould bo selected whiuh will furnish the
hrCHt yield of milk, and this selection
ch'iuld bo governed by tho circtiiiistnn
cos of feed. In most dairy districts the
Avrshlreri will bo found to bo tho beat
ndanted to tho jnupoao on account of
their smaller size nud their ability to
Uko caro of thomielvrn, nnd to furnish
tho largest yield of milk on shorter feed.
Wlicro tlio pastures nro luxuriant and
food is abundant, the Itolstcius will give
satisfaction. Thcsu arc tho most valua
ble cheeso-produclng cattle. Wo know
of crosses of tho Ayrshire upon tho na
tives which havo "demonstrated their
value. Theso grades mado superior cows
and ono of them so wonderfully com
bined tho How and quality of mflk that
sho would make eighteen pounds of but
ter a week. Where cows are kept for
butter, a selection of either tho Jersey or
Guernsey cross should bo made. Seven
ty years ago an Alderncy bidl produced
a heifer calf, which was reared and all
her female progeny saved. At this day
tho descendants jiro kept in tho fam
ily of the original heifer, nud nro
still noted as extra good cows, and the
marks of tho Aldcrney can be traced as
well the superior merits. Nearly half a
century has elapsed sinco Henry "W. Do
larow imported from England two cows
and a btdl, "Durham" "cattle. These
cows were good milkers, and recently I
saw two cows descended from this impor
tation which sliowed tho old Durham
type in great perfection, although sover
al generations iemo.ved by crosses upon
natives, and tlioy wero remarkably good
cows. Another fanner began with a
half bred Jersey cow, and by saving aud
retaining all his heifers from Jeiey bulls
ho has established a herd of graded
Jerseys which produce more butter than
any other dairy of liko number, and
twico tho amount ho used to obtain
when all of his stocks wcio natives.
Other fanners in tho neighborhood havo
followed his example, aud havo secured
thereby tho samo results. Grades aro
nearly, if not quite ns valuable as pure
breeds for uso in tho dairy. They pos
sess tho hardiness and strong constitu
tional qualities of tho native, which
keep them free from discaso and give
them tlio ability to eat and assimilate al
most anything and turn it to the best
account. This is proven by the fact that
in experiments in feeding to attatti great
weights, graded Short horns arc usually
selected. They combine tho frames of
tlio pure-breds and tlio strong stomachs
of tho natives.
Grade pigs aro by far the most profit
able for fattening on this account. They
possess tho fineness of bono and flesh
and aptitude to fatten of thoroughbreds,
aud also the vigorous appetites and stam
ina of tho natives. A tlioroughbied
sire will add, on this account alone, Sli
per cent, to the valuo of tho pigs on
those got by n siro of mean or no blood.
One South Down ram can doublo tlio
mutton value of tlio progeny of moro
than ono hundred merino sheep, and tho
offspring of theso grades, it kept for
, breeders, may bu made more desirable by
another cross by a pure-bred sire. Tho
income of the average dairy can be in
creased one-third by judicious crossing
of tho best native cowb with pure-blood
bulls. This statement resolves itself iti
to a sort of mathematical problom by
considering tho average yield of tho dai
ries of New York, for instance which
is about 1300 quarts and that of a good
Ayrshire herd which will run up to 2500
quarts. Graded AyiBhires or Jlolsteius
will add to the nalivo side of this pro
portion from 300 to 500 quarts of milk,
and grado Guernseys or Jerseys would
add an equal proportion to tlio average
yield of butter. It should bo added that
the butter of the grades is almost iden
tical with that of tho pure breds in
color and quality.
Kyi: Pastcises. Tho longer wo live
tho moro convinced wo are of the value
of early sowu rye for winter and spring
pasture. At such timia stock m ill thrive
and fatten on it with no other food,
while cows giving milk will double the
quantity and tho butter ho yellow and
fragrant. Pigs, Iambs, colts and calves
skip and play and grow like weeds when
turned upon it. Every one who pretends
to faun should sow a patch of rye in tho
month of August, if for no other purpose
than for such pasturage in spring. There
is nothing equal to it; indeed, wo think
it almost indispensable to tho growth
and thrift of stock.
Although it is a common opinion that
yellow corn eontains'moro oil and is rich
or feed than white corn, it is not sus
taiped by chemical analysis. Somo very
careful examinations were made for tho
New York Stato Agricultural Society
some years ago, which showed that
white corn contained considerably moro
oil than yellow corn. Probably, on tho
average of a hundred of bushels or
moro tests it might turn out that tlicro
is very little dilTeienco after ull in respect
of the color and quality of the grain and
that it depends moro upon tho manner of
growth, fertilizing and cultivation.

Tho native teacher stationed at Na Draii,
on being supplied with food by the
townsfolk, was horrified to obscrvo that
a portion of it was human flesh. Ho at
onco exclaimed against the food, and re
fused to eat of it. lhoso who brought
it to him admitted that it was human
flesh, and said they had killed nnd cook
ed n government oflicer, aud if ho;per
sisted in refusing to eat they would kill
and cook him also. In terror of his
life he ate a little, but took the first o
portunity of escaping from his terrible
entertainers, and made his way to the
coast, where he reported the crime nnd
subsequent abomination that had
been perpetrated. Tho leport seems al
most inci edible, but it is given on author
ity which leaves but little doubt as to its
authenticity. Dissatisfaction with the
government, of which the officer was tho
representative, is said to have been the
cause of the murder.
