ample open air spnoofor exercise, except
in cold, stormy weather; then ulonn need
they be warmly sheltered. It is proved
that if the dams of all kinds of domestic
stock, from horses down to Jiigs, nro

necessary that bulls designed to be sold

Ants as l'rnlt drawers' Friends.
Many of the leading orchard proprie
tors in 'Northern Italy nnd Southern
Cierinany are cultivators of the common
black ant, which insect they hold in high
esteem as the fruit growers' best friend.
Thoy establish ant hills in their orchards,
and leave tho police, service of their
fruit trees entirely to the tiny colonists,
which puss nil their time in climbing up
tho stems of the fruit trees, cleansing
their leaves and their boughs of male
factors, mature as well asenibryolie, and
descending laden with spoils to tlio
ground, where they comfortably con
sume, or prudently storo away their
booty. They never meddle with sound
fruit, but only invado such apples, pears
nnd plums as havo already been pene
trated by tho canker, which they remorse
lessly pursue to its fastnesses within tho
very heart of the fruit. Nowhere are
apple and pear trees so freo from blight
and destructive insecls as in the imme
diate neighborhood of a large ant hid,
live or six years old. The favorite food
of ants would appear to he the larva) and
pupnj of those creatures which would
spend tho whole of their brief existence
in dovouring the tender shoots and ju
venile leaves of fruit trees. J'niiric

Healing of Won mis in Horses and Cows.
To produco healing of a wound in a
horse or a cow, some stimulant is nearly
always required. This may bo common
spirits of turpentine, or the compound
tincture of benzoin or thai, of myjrh and
aloes. Kitherof Ihcso may lie' applied
with a feather once a day, or it the
wound is deep, the stimulant. Minuhl be
injected to tho bottom with a common
squirt can, or a syringe. Wounds should
always heal from the bottom, and to se
curo this tho opening should bo kept free,
by means of a plug of lint dipped in tho
stimulant used. Lint may be mado by
scraping a piece of linen cloth such as a
towel, with a knife and collecting tho
loose libers. Linen only should be used,
and never cotton or wool for this pur
pose. If pus is inclosed in n wound and
tho opening is permitted to close, nit ab
cess will be formed, or the pus will be
absorbed, with some future ill effect. In
tho case of deep, punctured wounds care
ful search should bo mado for the nossi
bio presence of splinters or other foreign
bodies and to enlarge the opening will
often facilitate tho search or assist in the
ultimate healing.

Mr. M. H. Mediuly, of Alliens, owns a
pair of horses that can understand every
thing tho driver says to them. 1 le never
carries a whip,butgovcrnsthemby words.
If one of tho pair fails to do its duty the
driver simply calls itbynaute,stating that
when they get to the stable punishment
will be inflicted. A gentleman tells us that
tho animal at once shows its understand
ing of the threat by tiembling in eety
limb, and is frightened nearly to death
when thelime arrives forits chastisement.
Several clear instances are recorded to
show that these horses possess n remarka
ble understanding of language.
