Iiilnnrlilcg a Ship.
Not one half tho pcojilo who witness
tho launching of a vesncl can tell how it
Is done. They hear a great Bound of
pounding and driving oi wedges for half
nu hour or bo, then u loud shout is raised
nnd tho ship slides slowly at first, hut
gradually increasing her speed, slides
with a steady, stately motion from off
tho iiilo of timber and blocks where slio
has been Standing for months; and whero
but a moment before tho hugo creature
towered aloft, nothing remains but ft
deb'is of timber nnd planks, while out on
tho water floats ono of the most graceful
works of man.
When tho Bhin is about ready tolaunoh
her itnmcnso weight rests principally up
on blocks Homo eight or ten inches square
on tho ends, nnd perhaps somo fifteen
or eighteen Inches in length. Theso
blocks' nro placed directly under tho keel
nnd in order to launch tho vessel it is
necessary to transfer tho weight of tho
vessel to tho way two long lines of
heavy timber reaching about two thirds
tho lengths of tho vessel on either side,
and about midway tho bilge or bottom.
Tlioso wavs nro slmnlv two leucths of
timber with n thick layer of crcasobetwecn
thcm,so that ns soon ns the ship acquires
nny momontum they will slip ono along
tho othor. To transfer tho weight of thu
vessel on these ways, so that gravity
tho stem or heaviest part of tho vessel
bcinir much lower than her bow will
cause her to move, is tho whole secret of
launching. To do this, between tho top
of tho wavs nnd tho vessel aro driven
pino wedges, which, of courso, raise her
womowhat, nnd so reliovo tho blocks un
der tho keol of part of tho wcightresting
upon them. This done, workmen tnko
their maces under tho ves

away tho blocks. When theso nro re
