Aspirsgns.
Tho papers are still discussing, and
with some acrimony, whether or not
there aro moro varieties ot asparagus
than one. Soino contend that there
is as much distinction between the
Mammoths, tho Colossals, and the
Goliaths, and tho old plants of gar-
dens, as thcro is between an Jiany l ork
and a 1 Jruiuliead cabbage. One woulduj
poso that where there is any ditlwi'iiee. it
would not bo dilliuultto point out where.
in tho difference laub If we have two
men before us, we say this one has a dark
complexion, thick lips or curly hair
and that is a light man, with blub eyes
or a pump handlu nosoj and we look for
such intelligent discrimination when any
variety of truit or vegetable is offered
for our selection. Wo know a Seckel
from a Uartlett pear when wo see it, or
a Prussian Blue; but when wo ask for
thn characteristics of tho wonderful va
rieties ql asparagus, we aro simply told
that" they aro larger than the old ones
everywhere.
It is not lit for us to settlo theso weighty
questions of differences. They may bo
good and valuable kinds for all we know.
Vo hope they are. Yet it is quite cer
tain that we have seen just as largo as
paragus from an ordinary bed, when
properly cared lor, as any one could ob
tain by planting theso improved kinds.
If this" one item of si.o is all that tho im
pro vers can claim, it is a small one. Any
ono can got as largo and as good aspara
gus as ho can desire from seed from any
well grown asparagus bed.
Tho fault of many who desire good as
paragus is that they set tho plants too
thick. To get mammoth "grass," the
roots should bo set not closer than two
feet apart. A very rich soil is essential
to good asparagus, but this may bo near
tho surface and above tho roots. The
common practice of digging down deep
into clay soil is an injury, and many
plantations fail from just this extra labor
in doing this "well." Tho asparagus is
a seaside plant naturally, and grows in
sand or sandy soil, in which tho water
passes rapidly away. The necessity of
having tho roota high and dry, instead
of deep down in a well, is well under
stood by tho English, who generally
plant tho asparagus in raised beds four
leet wide, ami oiieu ns mucn as eiguieen
inches above tho surrounding snrface.
Wo feel suro that if tho hints given are
nttended to, any of tho old fashioned as
paragus beds will give seed which will
make plants that will give any ono sat
jsfactioii.
