The king strolled into the garden long

that the prince had used only the good

A woman with a will can make her
way iu the American world. In I'lster
c unity. New York, there is a woman of
real grit who itihciitcd foiuteeii years
a largo eslato, consisting piiueipally
of farming propcily,heavily encumbered
with debt. It was the old homestead,
and she could not bear the idea of see
ing it p iss into tho hands of strangers,
and was determined that it should mil.
Although then only twenty four years
old, and with no more practical knowl
edge ol life than an ordinal y country
lass, she assumed sole charge of the es
late, determined to clear it of debl. I lav
ing an old mother, si.ly two years of
age, a half sister, also helpless from old
age, the two orphan children of a do
ceased brother, and a brother in tlie last
stages of consumption to provide for.
This made her link doubly hard. A lit
tle expel ieiice taught her that it was ini
possible to snppoit her large family and
keep up the interest aiising fiom the
heavy indebtedness of the estate fiom
the resources of the farm. She decided
upon school teaching. She was engag
ed to teach in her own neighborhood at
$H per mouth and her salary in a shott
time was raised to S II) per month. She
lias continued school teaching ever since

pitch on hay, rake, bind, etc. She has
enrnod from teaching school over $.V0(l
paid off the debt on' the old homestead,
and greatly improved the propel ty.
She has been an extensive stock raiser.
Her wheat crop averaged thisvear forty
two bushels to the acre, tlio largest
vield in the county. A shott time ago
she learned that a" brother-in-law living
in lYnnsylvania was hi destitute circum
stances. She went to him and found
him helpless from an inciiiable disease,
with a family depending upon him.
"Hen," she said, "what cm I do for

I am as von well know, tho most sym

And it is precisely because I am so that
I sought the pleasure of an interview
with tho accomplished Sara liernhatdt
yesterday. Foitiino smiled on me, and
I procured tho coveted introduction.
When wo inet.Sara's eyes betoken recent
weeping, and 1 at first supposed that she
had tired of life. An attendant iufoi tu

ever. I was about to speak, but being
embarrassed the lady kindly took the iu

said the lovely Sara.
"Hones youis," said I, pointing tho as
sets ol a chicken icposing somnainbtil
istically on a tray. (I will not be cer

"Hong jour, Monsieur, ' responded the
divine Sara, with a thrilling smile. Then
she trembled dramatically, and to ascer
tain if she were cold and if I would close
the window, I asked :
"Demi semiquaver T
"Vat a funny man's !" she answered
politely.
Sho still trembled violently, aml it was
of course my duty to ascertain why. Any
body w ho has studied I'Vench remembers
the 'first exercises in tho book.
"Avvy vous le pain?" I asked.
"I am not zo suHishiong Hungry," she
answered.
This was probably a joke.and we both
laughed heartily: and the laughing was
increased when I leniarkcd, "Xo

Then Saia turned sideways and gave
mo a profile view. I had to look twice
to see her. She is rather tall, and thin
almost to nothingness. She lias black
eyes, which caused a fiiendly feeling be
tween us at once (and sometimes two)
myself. Her hair is the color of what I
suppose is known iu French as brie. Xo
ticing a piano in tho room, I asked "Pia

The lady excused hersi If on the plea
of being tired, and shrugging her dainty
shoulders, she said:
"I am so weariness."
"Mile, liernhaidt then suggested that
as thoisitor spoke some Knglisb, the
further conversation should bo carried on
iu that language."

Sara proved to bo very witty. Shu

"Were you seasick !"
"We, we, monsieur. Wanee ; I was

'You do not appear to have siiffned

she heaved a sigh, which I heaved back
