An idiot who, peihaps, suipasseH all
rivals in memory, mid in the capacity to
make mathematical calculations in his
head, was recently examined before the
students of the medico-surgical academy
of St. Petersburg, lie is L'7 years old.
In his youth he was noted for his biil
Jiaut ability, but was addicted to the
immoderate use of liquors, and led a dis
sipated life. He was attacked by an ae
eute disease. When he rieoveted he
was found to have lost all bis mental
faculties except memory and the power
of mathematical calculation. These in
creased proportionately as bis under
standing and power of logical thinking
vanished. Now ho is a living phono
graph and calculating apparatus. In the
lecture room Professor .Metjevsky 11
ipicstcd him to Fipiaic uiimbeis contain
ing five or six ligures, to extract the
sqitaio roots of all like numbers: and mi
on. All tho questions were correctly
answered by the patient in a few sec
onds. Xo mathematician present could
do anything like it. Then the Profess; r
reiiuesteil some one to read poetry aloud
for several minutes, and the patient rt
jieated it as correctly as a phonograph,
flie professor declared to the audience
that bo was unable to explain tho physi
cal phenomenon. The memory and the
calculating capacity of thu patient are
still growing, while in oilier lespecls be
is becoming a 111010 hopeless idiot.

A Thirsty Crowd.
A good story is told of one of the
most pretentious members of the llrook
lyn acht Club. During the summer
ho entei tnined a party of friends on
board his beautiful schooner in his usual
econmical manner. As the guests sat in
the cabin, refreshed only by bis sii.uk
ling conversation, one of them observed
a tassel hanging from a bracket. 'That,'
said the gallant yachtman, 'is something
entirely new. It is an electric bell, which
communicates instantaneously with the
steward. The guest did so, amid a gen
eral clearing of throats and brightening
of eyes. The steward at once respond
ed but there fell upon the thirsty and
exhausted party a w orse than Arabian
drought when the gallant yachtsman or
dered a 'glass of water, Johnson.'
