Mi'Msrn. Sti-.i'vlii'nlj-u it Clothier have
eomjileteil, furnislied :ind ojietit'il the nd
lioti to their line store nt Kighlh and
Miiiki't streets. The enlargement is one
that should lie seen to lie aijiieeiuted,
and is worth a visit solely on its own ae
cimnt. With a view to the enlargement
necessitated by the itrowinjj; lminess.the
store No. S North Kijjhth street, which
adjoined the rear of their main building,
was iirst purchased, together with a row
of eleven dwellings on Filbert Avenue,
n com t extending from the rear of the
Market street store clear back' to Kilbeit
street.
On tho north end of this lota hand
some new building, with two show win
dows on the Iirst tloor, was run up to
tho height of four stories. Itetweeii
that ami the main building, on IHaikct
street, two corridors were constructed,
ono above the other, and then the
Kiglith street store being made to ojiou
into them, thus throwing tho two low er
lloors of all the buildings into one,
obtaininc three handsome fronts on
lUnrkct, on Eighth, and on Filbert street
and making .Messrs. Straw-bridge it
Clothier's establishment unequaled in
the city iu jioint of size.
To give some idea of the dimensions
of their colossal building as it stands, be
it said that the fronts measure on Mar
ket street 100 feet, on Filbert 21 and on
Kighth ia0,and tho west wall from street
to street, is 30, feet in one unbroken
line. Under tho entiro extent of thu
Btoro runs a basement which is devoted
chiefly, save a portion under the main
building and a few alcoves for various
purposes, to the storage of goods, for
tho reception of which beneath the Fil
bert Etreet front a substantial iron slide
rack has been constructed ; and the en
tranco way above, in the dark green and
gilty facade, between two handsomely
tilled show windows, is a good jioint at
which to begin an inspection of the estab
lishment. Filtering hero and looking along the
corridor, which gives you a clear view
through to Market street, you have be
fore you tho silk department, and at your
right, behind the west slioji window, a
small room walled with mirrors, for the
purjiose of displaying the effect of color
ed silks by gaslight. On the left is a
suit of alcoves honjiilably arranged for
tho fonvenienco of traveling salesmen
exhibiting samjiles of goods, or seeking
a quiet retreat for writing business let
ters. Passing up the corridor, with the. silks
on your right and on the left the exten
sive dejiartmciit devoted to tho sale of
black dress goods, you reach the main
desks where either or both thu jiaitners
may usually bu found, and have iijhiii
your left the entire extent of the Kighth
Mreet store, one side of which isdovuted
to fancy work and the other to notions,
silk fringes and i.isementeiie.
Directly in front of you is tho A n
square of the first floor of the exten
sivu uniii buildiug.devoted, iu its many
sets of great counters and toweling
shclves,to cloths, woolen goods, hosiery,
calicoes, laces, white goods, gentlemen's
furnishing goods and fancy articles, so
that from the main desk Messrs. St raw
bridge ifc Clothier can, willi ono swieji
of tho eye. command thu whole extent
of that floor of their emporium, upon
which the bulk of their immensu business
of buying and selling is carried on.
At this point, also, you remark, jul
in the icar of thu Kighth street sloiu
(though be it not forgotten, liy lite n,
that the main store itself lias two en
trances on Kighth street, besides the
threo from Maiket street,) a stauwav
leading to a ocntrrd jiiiiut on tlio second
floor. If you rlmnm you may dispenso
with this and go up by the eleatnr. on
the west side near the Mai kit street
front; but ifynu take tlie staiis, w bu b

into Kighth street; or turning towatiltlie
main building, you emirge upon its w

the same as the Iirst, down upon wbieli
you look through huge ojienings, j ru
tected with substantial and hnudsoim
balustrades. Here, in a room eo-exten

rear jioition of which is devoted to
children's suits, many of them being
