THE CANDIDATES.
We publish tbe names of the nomineex of
the Democratic party of Col. co., this week,
It is unnecessary to say anything about them
at this time, as all have been before the peo-
ide before, and are well known.
So far as we know the nominations were
fairly made, and tbo candidates are entitled
to tbe support of every Democrat. Exper
ience has taught that it is not safe for any
one to assume that a nomination is equiva
lent to an election in this county. Candi
dates are expected to work not only for
themselves, but for tbe whole ticket,Natinnal
State and county, from this time until the
election.
Now that tho Convention has been held;
it 13 lime that tbe two wings of tbe DemO'
cratic party in this county should drop their
personal differences, and work together for
the success of the whole ticket. That there
are two wings is an undisputed fact,

Is as to which shall control the parly ma-

CONVENTION NOTES.
South Conyugham cast but two votes in
Convention for Representative, because tbe
voters of that district chose to Instruct for Mr
Vanderslice alone. They did not choose to'
vote for a second candidato and by rule un
Instructed delegates are not permitted to
vote. This limitation was adopted some
years since in convention to prevent tho
complaint that a few uninstructed delegates
could always control the result as they
pleased In any close contest, which would
be unfair to other districts and lead to In
trigue if uot corruption in nominations.
lu other cases In Convention a candidate
was allowed to receive only the whole prop
er vote of a district and no more; for to al
low him a tloullcd voto would be plainly
wrong. That would be to allow him the
rotes that can only 'Hie given to a second
candidate where two are to bi nominated
together, which is tbe case as to representa
tives and county commissioners.
The nomination of representatives for a
second terra has been the usage in this
county, and in the few instances where it
has been departed from, the departure has
been a subject of complaint. The reasons
In any case for disregarding this usage ought
to be very clear and strong.
Tbe Congressional and Senatorial nomi
nations (so far as this county acts alone)
were settled by tbe voters at tbe primary
elections. It only remained for the Con
vention to verify results by receiving and
announcing tbe returns, and then to ap
point conferees. Following this action the'
table of voting for the whole county, now
published, will show how each caudldate
was supported In each district, and that be
had fairly and Justly allotted to him his
share of tbe convention vote.
Mr. Little, tho District Attorney, ii to be
congratulated upon bis lenomination. It
was so perfectly clear that he had been a
faithful officer, that bis Dame was placed
upon the ticket by common consent.

The Honorable William 1). Kelly, who is
turning summersaults on the tarllf tightrope
to distract attention from the free trade re
cord of Mr. James A, Garfield, has done
business with this same Mr. Garfield before
to-day. They were together when Oakes
Ames was dividing tho plunder of the gov
ernment by the Union Pacific railroad. The
committee, a majority of whom were re
publicans, in their report to congress
find the cases of Judge Kelley.of Pcnnylva-
nla, and of Mr. Garfield very slmillar iji the
evidencc.and thecommltteo In their findiii,
detail tho transactions of Mr. Kelley and
then attach it with a "ditto'' to Mr. Oar
field. Tbo committee say :
"They can find fiom the evidence that in
(ho early part of tho second session of the
Fortlctti Congress, and probably in Decem
ber, 1807, Mr. Ames ngreed with Mr. Kflley
to sell him ten shares of Credit Mobilier
stock at par and Interest from July 1, 1E07
Mr. Kelley was not then prepared to pay for
hisstock, and Mr. Ames agreed to carry his
slock until ho could pay for It. On the third
day of January, 1SCS, there was a dividend
of 80 per cent, on Credit Mobilier stock in
Union Pacificbouds. Mr. Amcsrcceivedjtho
bonds as the stock stood In his name and
sold them for 70 per cent, of their face. In
Juno, 1808, there was u cash dividend of
CO per cent, which Mr. Ames also receive.
The proceeds of the bonds sold and the cash
dividend received by Mr. Ames amounied
to $1,376. Theparvalua of the stock and
Interest thereon from tbo previous July
amounted to $1,047, so that alter payiug lor
the stock there was a balance of dividend
due Mr. Kelley of $321). On the twenty
third day of Juue,loC8, Mr. Ames gave Mr.
Kelley a check for that sum on tbe Sergeant
at-arms of tbe House of Representatives
and Mr. Kelley received tbo money thereon
The committee find that Mr. Kelley under
stood that the money be thus received was a
balance of dividends due him after paying
for the stock. The facts in regjrd
to Mr. Garfield as found by the committee
are identical with llho caso of Mr. Kelley
to tho point of the reception of the check for
$329. He agreed with Mr. Ames to take ten
shares of the Credit Mobilier stock but did
not pay for tbe same. Mr. Ames received
the 80 per cent, dividend in bonds, sold
them for 00 per cent, and also received the
CO per cent, cash dividend, which altogcthc
with the price of the stock and interest left
a balance of $329. This sum was paid over
to Mr Garfield by a check on the Sergeant
at-arms. Mr. Ames received all the sut.se
quent dividends and tbe committee do uot
find since tbo payment of the $329 there has
been any communication between Mr. Ames
and Mr. Garfield on the subject until tbe
investigation began."
Tbo committee in their long report ex
plained how tus Credit Mobilier was but
little better than the outright conveion
of tbe property given by tho government
to tho Union Pacific road into privato
purses.
How Aliens liecome Voters.
Every supporter of Hancock and English
who requires naturalization papers to enable
him to vote, should attend to the matter at
once; and all friends should see that no vote
Is lost by negligence. Hereunder is an
abstract of the law, and somo suggestions on
the subject.
An alien Is required to reside in the Uni
ted Stales five years, two years of which
time must be after filing a declaration of
Intention ; but when an alien has been
resident tbrco years before reaching the age
of twenty -one, ho need not file a declaration.
Residence must be proved to tho satisfaction
of the court, by competent witnesses. On
year's residence in the State is required, but
it need not be tbo year last past. Soldtcre
are entitled to full papers after ono year's
residence. Minor child. en become citizens
by naturalization of the father or widowed
mother. If an alien files a declaration, but
dies before naturalization, bio widow and cb.il
drcn become entitled to all rights of cill
zens upon taking the oath required by law.
A child born in a foreign land is a citizen if
the fatber be a citizen.
Certificates of naturalization can only be
obtained in open court ; and all requiring
tbem should bo in attendance at September
term.
Declaration of intention can be filed at
any time in tbo Prothonotary's ofllce and
thoso who have neglected It, should now file
them.
Tuote who filed declaration Inothrr coun
ties or States, can get full papers here by
showing first papers; aud if these are uot in
hand, copies can bo obtained by mall from
any part of tbe Union.

TANNER'S ArrKHTB.
coMPi.irrto.v oftiit. fokty hays fast.
fir. Tanner completed his forty days fast
at noon last B.ilurday. At 7 o'clock In tho
morning ho had a fit of vomiting. Ho got
up and dressed, but at7:-10 he was very much
exhausted aud laid In his cot for three hours
A visit from his brother-lii law seemed to
make him nervous and ho complained of
"(.-oneness" in his stomach, and aftuwards
he walked around the room. At II o'clock
ho was standing at a wiudow look inn down
on the crowd Shortly before 12 o'clock n
large tablo of watermelons, full ts.brcad.etc.
were spread In the hall.
.Iii't lefuro noon his weight w.n ono hun
dred and twenty-ouc and a litlf pound;,
n loss ol thirty six pounds in forty days ;
temperature &t; pulse 112, and respiration
17.
At precisely 12 o'clock the signal brings
wbNtle from n ncinhboiing factory ,tho crowd
of a thousand people Inside tho hall and nil
Immense trowd outside cheered Dr. Tanner
i-nthusiKStically and bo waved bis bandktr
chief in response. At that moment he had
n peach in his hand, but some ono suatched
it away from him. He immediately drank
a glas of milk and called for the Georgia
watermelon. He dug hi hands in tho latter
and ate heartily of it.
1'laclng tbe gin's to his mouth be said :
"Gentlemen, you don't believe that's pood,"
He left the ball In a carriage at 12jl5 and
was driven to the residence of Dr. Gunn,
where he will undergo medical treat
ment.
On leaving the hall the doctor walked un
assisted down stairs with a slice of melon in
bis band. He received an ovation from the
crowd. He joked nnd talked with those
about the vehicle and expressed much grAti
ilcatiou at the hearty reception. Finally the
attendants had to hold him in his seat fear
ing a reaction from over exertion.
Arriving at Dr. Gunn'a house he lay down
in the front parlor and endeavored to sleep.
So far the milk and watermelon had not
disagreed with him. Dr. Gunn himself is
ill through over exertion.
At 3:20 Friday afternoon Dr. Tauner's
pulse was 82; his bodily temperature was 1)9
degrees ; his respiration 13 per minute and
tbe strength of the gripot his right hand
was recorded as 78 kilogrammes, while that
of his left was 72. His weight was 122,
About 3:30 o'clock the faster made a descent
from his gallery. Instead of walking, how
ever, ho bolted straight through the throng
in attendance to tbe autc-room of the hall
on the north side. This was cleared from
visitors. Thedoctor's purpose iu moving from
the gallery was to got fresher air. There was
placed in front of the window a table aud on
top of it was placed a rocking chair. A wood
en bottom chair was set beside the table and
Dr. Tanner, now on the last day of his fast,
mounted the table with its aid and seated
himself on the rocking chair. The window
was opened and he had tho door of the ante
room opened to allow a draft through the
hall. The doorway was filled lth eager
faces. "Send those people away I" shouted
the faster, poundiog the iron end of his cane
on the table underneath him. The door
was shut. Soon afterwards there was some
discontent expressed iu the hall. A report
was brought to Dr. Tanner that one man
was insisting ongettiugbis money back if
be could not see tbe faster. "Don't leUiim
go out," taid Dr. Tanner: let him come in
here nnd sC6 inc." Soon there was a line of
visitor filing through the ante-room. Dr.
Tanner's .position oil the table was taken
for the sake of getting-fresh air, but it served
admirably for the purpose of exhibiting,
Resting on tho seat and leaning against the
back ot the chair by which he had moun
ted to the table was a large piece of paste
board, bearing the following Inscription
'Positively no questions aujiVcred by Dr.
Tanuer or the physiciaui on watch, This
rule will be strictly enforced."
Dr. Tanuer was very happy In the even
ing. He walked several times around the
room, talking and chatting to everyone and
felt better, it was generally agreed, than he
had several days before, lie returned from
an evening drive at 7:30 o'clock and was
mot by a throng at the stairs. For their
beuttlt be walked three times around the
hall and smiled and bowed. He carried an
ebony stick. He had two slight stomach dis
turbances in the evening but got to sleop
readily and at midnight was retting peace
fully. A NEW
