Reasons, nml It Is br-Ielvcil to be demon
Mrttcil beyond n doubt that It will add very
much to the value of Vrlcrn lands.
This grjln is called Egyptian, or rlco
corn, nnd, so far m known, has not been
cultivated In nny other part of too United
StnUs. The seed wan obtained from the
display made by the Egyp.ta.lti Government
at the Centennial Kx position. The name Is
darlved from tho resemblance; of the grain
to rice, and so far as It Inh been fxpcrlincn
ted with, has proved a nircem, both In wet
and dry senaons. While crowlne, this crop
could haidly be distinguished from sorghum
tho ted forms at the top of tho stalk In
large bunches, and, as It ripens nnd gets
hpnvifr,bcnd9 over and hangs down, not un
like n cluster of grapes. It belongs to the
tuar cane f.uiily and Is cultivated In the
citno manner and ns easily as sorghum or
broom corn. One bushel of seediasulliclent
for five acre", nnd it has been put in with a
wheat drill. In harvesting the Leads only
nro gathered, and n good thrashing machine
will clean reedy for market two thousand
bushels ii day. The specimens raised this
year weigh tlxty pounds to the bushel. The
yield per acre In 1S7S was from sixty to seventy-five
bushels. This season, which, as
aaid above, has been n very dry one, the
yield was forty to forty-five bushels per acre.
No fcicntific analysis has been made of
this new grain as yet; indeed, it is scarcely
know, except in homo two or three counties
in Western Kansas, where it has btcn grown
by several larmtra who dedre to find some
grain that would serve in placo of corn as
food for stock. Tbo trial by theso men lin
satisfied them that for horses, cattle sheep,
or swine, it is superior to maize, and farm
mimals to which it is fed give it tbo pref
erence to corn when both are laid before
them When ground loto meal the rice
corn is about equal to a mixtriic of one
third wheat flour and two-thirds corn
meal.
The Profit of Apple Orowlns
It is somewhat dUIicult to get at tho ex.
net qnantityof apples produced throghoui
even a State in the course of a season, na at
best it must be largely guessed at; but one
tiing is certain, that the prodvet is steadily
increasing in a greater proportion than the
growth of population. We have seen it
stated however, that at Chicago nnd other
Western cities, it is by no means uncommon
for a singlodealer to have n hundred thous
and barrels pass through his hands.
At tho lato I'ruit-Growers Convention
fttltethlehem, in this state, tho question was
discussed whether it was probable that
tho market for apples would bo over
done, and we are glad to see the right argu
ment prevailed in tho decision that it was
not. The apple is a tree not likely to be
plauted extensively near large towns, as be
fore they are fairly in bearing tho laud is cut
up for roads, buildings, or some improve
ments; and yet the cities as they grow are
the chief markets for' their products. The
sime long time of coming into bearing de
ters many even in country districts from
planting. Those who own land arc olten
moved not to do anything that may not
come back when they want to sell, and so
do not do much which will only come back
In the distant future. Still io the case of an
apple orchard, the value of one in bearing
is now so well understood that there is less
disposition to fear to plant than there was
There are somo who would yet sa soon buy
n farm without an orchard as with one at
least pretend to feel so while higgling on
the price of the land and a few perhaps
will contend that they would givo more f'cr
the land if not incumbered by the trees ;
but on the whole tho true value of an apple
orchard is much more estimated In buyin;;
and selling than it was, as may be seen
from I he particular care that is taken when
vfhtn alarm is offered for sale to mention
the fact of there being an apple oichard
upon it, as well as tho extent of it, the qual
ity of it, the quality of the fruit, Ac. Hence
it may be received as nn argument not like
ly lobe successfully resisted, either the ap
ple growing will be overdone or the de
mand for apples really tho most valuable
of all Iruits will not increase even over tho
increase of population.
Care of Ducks.
Ducks usually begin to lay in Fcbruary.and
if shut up at night most of their eggs will
be saved ; shut up all tho tinio they will
stop loyinf. They will sometimes lay in
nests prepared for them in their roosting
house, but do not build nests of their own
until nearly done laying and ready to sit,
whic.li is about the inidJIe of May. Taking
away their eggs will not prolong their lay
ing. Duck should not be plucked in
winter, nnd those that are t3 sit should
not ba plucked until 11 week after hatch
ing, ns their long four weeks Bitting leaves
them west. After that they should be pick-
oJas often as their feathers ripen, wlrch
can be told by picking a few fiom ths
breast; if there is no colored fluid in the
end of the feather, it Is ripe. The little
gray ducks ripen their feathers once In four
weeks ; if not picked soon alter they begin
to shed them, aud pin feathers take their
places, when separating them is very tedious.
Larger breeds of ducklings do not ripen
their feathers so quickly. Tho ducklings
can be kept near the house better ifhatched
under hens, as ducks and turkeys are alike
about keeping their little ones as far away
as possible, until hawks or other animals
catch them, when tho old oues come home
ns tame as hens. Ducklings should be fed
oa raw Indiau meal doujh, salted a lit
tle, once or twice a week. 'A dish
containing a few quarts of water, and
refilled when empty, will do for them as well
as a creek, but it should be fixed so that
they can get out of the water easily or they
will drown. Do not confine them, and they
will help themselves to saud and insects.

A Spanish Knife.
Tho nntlonnl weapon of tho Spaniards,
says nn Kngllsh writer, is tho knife, and
certainly they know how to use It. Talk
ing one day with a young man who seemed
likely to know, I asked him what there was
peculiar In tho management of tho knife.
"Why,"snld bo with nsmllo. "I could kill
you, and you couldn't kill me." "Why I'd
make you wink, nnd stab you whlloyiu
winked." "How would you makoino wink."
"Why, so said he," throwing up his left
hand near myojo. Well, I could do the
sune." "Try it," said he. I tiled, nnd
found it Impossible to make him wInk,though
I passed my hand up and down several
times so as almost to touch hlr eyelashes,
Ills brlsht black cyei looked out at mo
unflinchingly all tho while. It was clear
that his eyes werj educited, and that mine
ncro uot. I then asked him If there was
any possibility of an unarmed man defend
ing himself ngiinst one armed with a
knife.
"Oh, jm," '1 he, "I'll show you j" and,
in an instant, whipping on" his coat, ho held
tho end of ono sleeve firmly in his left baud
wrapping the rest of his coat rapidly around
his forearm, and bunging the end ol
tho other sleeve also in his left hand,
where It was firmly held, binding together
ho whole mass, which formed ,n sullicieut
dd'en"e against tho thrust of an ordinary
knife.
I then recollected that ono of the maiks
of thi men of tho l'ueto del Sol, at Madrid
was a flashed clotk, evidently not so honor

Charles Dickens onco wrote fo Sir John
Rennet a letter which runs thus: 'My dear
4r since my hall clock was sent to your es
tablishment to be cleaned it has gone (as in
leed, it always has) perfectly well, but has
-truck tho hours with great reluctance; and,
ifter enduring internal agonies of a most
litresing nature it has now ceased striking
dtogcthcr. Though a happy release for tho
clock, this is not convenient to the household.
If you can send down any confidential per
son with whom tho clock can confer, I think
it may have something on its works that it
would be glad to tuako a clean breast of.
Faithfully yours, Charles Dickens."-Sir John
Bennett replied, giving good hope of the
clock's perfect restoration.
