The sale of the personal property of the late George Risewick, which took place last week Thursday and Friday was largely attended. All parts of Columbia county were represented, and there were parties from Danville, Money, Haz- eton, Wilkesbarre, Willianisport, Onshore and many other places, who came express'y to at tend the sale. The goods brought several bun- Irtd dollars more than iheappraised value. This is owing to the excellent management of the Administrator, Mr, David Lowenberg who ad vertised liberally, but judiciously. Mostoflhe roperty al the livery stable was purchased by Amos Buckalew, and his brother. Some of our local papers appear to be exer cised about the lale change in thu Columbian. Columbian We try to believe thai October has been ushered In, but find an obstac le in Iho remarkable August sun that drives the perspiration in reeking rivulets down ; flushed faces, and powders the dust in our streets. The overcoat has given way to the duster and the relics of summer straw hats have superceded the warmer felt. But for Ihe change of garments elFected by the groves and the absence of many of the feathered songsters, we might fancy ourselves toiling under an August sky. Rain will doubtlessly make a change and rain is needed. The river never has been lower in the memories of sorao of our oldest citizens, but to this the bass man does not object; it is a har vest. Business here seems to bj rapidly improving, at the car shops and rolling mill everything has a brisk and business like appearance. Air. lirug ler, architect, of Danville is erecting ten for Jackson & Wooodin in the northern part of Ihe town. The trade in the stores is improving In the same ratio. Our public schools opened on the fifteenth of last month with three hundred and ten pupils,- and the number has since increased uptil the five rooms are over crowded. Another build1 ing will certainly be needed next year. The Literary Society of the y.M. C. Some other lime I will report what is done at the meetings, I am glad to see that among the Society's most active members are the majority of our divines, doctors, lawyers, and teachers. The aim of the Society is to establish itself firmly and then draw in the younger people of Ihe town to take a clive parts.
