Mr. Sarvis wont into a barber shop to get
shaved last week. When his turn came he
stretched himself out in the chair and told
tho artist what he wanted to do, Mr. Sarvis
was considerably surprised at him, for he
asked not a single question and was very
short in his answers when interrogated on
tbe state of the weather, the political out
look, etc. While being shaved he carefully
remarked to the artist :
'Do you think my hair needs cutting ?'
The barber ran his finger through his
hirsute and replied :
'No, not for a month yet.
Mr. Sarvis was astonished at his hones
ty. 'Do you think I need a shampoo ?'
'No sir ; your head is quite clean.'
Have you a preparation you can recom
mend for the preservation ot the hair ?' ask-ed-Mr.
Sarvis.
'You need nothing of the kind sir.'
'But my son does.'
Tell him to use entile soap and hot wa
ter ; all these pieparations are frauds.'
'Can you tell hie how to get rid of these
pimples ?'
Yes, air !'
'How ?
'Go to some good physician and get a pre
scription 'Will you let' me have a brush with rne
tallc bristles ?'
'Never keep them, they do more harm
than good '
Then Sir. Sarvis told him that he was
possessed of that kind of lionesty, which
sends people to tho poor-house, and walked
out more astonished than if he had Just put

they had been there and understood the
whole business.
"Heen gittin'a licking, Ben?" asked sev

"Yes, murmured he; 'I got licked tur

"Dis-obeyiu", you mean," rried they,
"No, fur obeyln', I tell ye,' persisted he
then, seeing their looks of incredulity, he
made this explanation; "When I wero
comin into the house my boots were muddy
as blazes, and mother had just been scrubbin
the floor; 6ays she, 'Ben, you'd better walk
right over that clean floor with your muddy
boots. 'Anything to oblige yon,' says I.

I.uther McCoy, a young law student of
Bonneville, Indiana, met with one of the
most reinarkablo adventures on record, the
alleged facts of which have just come to
Bgnt. McCoy says he went to Hockport to
attend the Spencer county court, and while
returning home about 10 o'clock in the
evening he was stopped by Jacob Brother
.and Levi Landshurg, who demanded that he
should go to tho Clerk's office, get a license,
and marry Jacob's daughter, Cynthiana.,
Having no means of defence, McCoy was
taken by Brother and Landsburg to the
Clerk's dtBce. wbo Issued the papers, and
the trio started together for Brother's resi
dence, A clergyman was called In, and
McCoy was married to tho woman, This,
McCoy alleges was all done with threats of
death to him should he resist, The newly
married couple were taken to a room and
locked up for the night, and In the morning
the groom started for hU father's residence
with the bride. Having told bis father the
circumstances of the marrlaee. the old
gentleman took the bride back to her home,
and McCoy has now brought suit to 'have,
the marriage declared null and void, It
appears that McCoy and Cynthiana had
been engaged to be married but tbe former,
broke the engagement.

John had been rather backward in his stud

may iuiagino the disgust that was manifested
upon reading the reply, which was as follows;
"Send him home and we will behead him."
John will stay with the Mclicaa man and

There was a terrible scene at Niagara, a
day or two ago. It was reported that a re
ligious maniac was about to float down the
river in a row boat to tho edge of the fall,
expecting to be miraculously Bayed from
death. A multitude of people gathered on
Uoat Island and along the Canadian shore,
and presently they were horror stricken to
see a boat drifting down the middle of the
river. In the. stern was the figure of a man

perfectly satisfied that some miracle would
save him from his impending fate. Nearer
the awful brink rushed the boat, and, fiually,
with a mad plunge the frail bark dashed

fell to the ground weeping and praying.

Illegal Fees.
Judee Sterrett; of the Supreme Court,
says' on this' subject "Sound public policy
rr quires us to hold that a public officer who,
virtute officii, demands and takes as fees for
his services what are not authorized or more
than is allowed by law, Should be compelled
to make restitution. He and the public, wbo
have business to transact with bini, do not
stand upon an equal footing. It Is his special
business to be conversant with the law under
which be acts, and to know precisely how
much he is authorized to demand for his
services. But with them it is different.
They have neither the time nor the oppor
