ANOTHER SHOOTING ACCIDENT.
Scarcely had our last week's paper, contain
Ing an account of a death through the bursting
of a gun, been issued from the press when the
particulars of another shooting accident came to
our knowledge. This time the affair transpired
in Berwick and was caused by the careless hand
ling of fire-arms.
it was early on iumy morning, and a 'young
man named Seth Courtright. Bon of Mr. Abra.
ham Courtrij lit, wan the victim, He was in
the store of Mr. J. V. Frcy at the time, engag
ed in oxaminmg a revolver of Thomas Frey, a
son of the store keeper. He .had just handed
the weapon back to Its owner, with tho barrel
pointed toward himself, when it went off quite
unexpectedly and lodged a ball close beside the
jugular vein, it was a narrow escape from in
stantaneous death for young Courtright, for had
the leaden messenger penetrated wilh more force
lo the spinal column, or served the carotid ar
tery, or the vein, such would have been the re
sult. Dr. Hill was called in and after examln
ing the wound had the young man conveded to
his home, where Dr Little was also summoned
Further examination showed that the ball had
not taken a direct course, nor severed any vital
organs, being lodged, however, in such a place
that it would not be advisable to have it remov
ed. Much has been said and written against the
pernicious habit of carrying and handling dan
gerous weapons, but it seems that until render
ed wiser by sorrowful experiences like the
above, almost everybody laughs at adviue. It
is to be regretted that in many instances a hu
man life is the price uf tho lesson, and cpec
ially fortunate were tho parlies concerned in
the above accident in this respect. The habit
of carrying concealed weapons is looked upon
with the utmost aversion by all good citizens,
and were all the known cases throughout the
land made to feel tho severity of the law for
the offense it might have a salutary e fleet-.

Wo clip tbe following from the Dantille In-
tclUgenccr. A little information from our Com
missioners ns to Columbia county would be of
interest to our tax-payers :
Taxing Heal Estate. The Revenue Com
missioners havo sent the ultimatum to the
County Commissioners demanding that they
pay into the State' Treasury $314.05, which the
former allege is the gross amount due tho Com
monwealth by this county. The true amount
due the Stite by Montour of personal tax ns
sojsed is 183.33. The Revenue Commission
ers, however, are not satisfied with this rend
ering, but demand $411.32 extra. This comes
out of tho county treasury of taxes paid on
real estate. And yet tho citizens of this Stato
are continually cajoled and deluded with tho
boast that there is no state tax on real estate.
We show by the above that there is a tax on
real estate equal to the amount assessed on
personal pioperty not laid directly by act of
tho legislature, but indirectly gathered from
the people by a Board of Revenue Commis
sioners. '
THE LEGISLATURE.
This body Is in full blast, and after the elec
tion of its own officers and thatof Don Cameron
to ihe United States Senate, the chief object of
the House seems to be to biiDt up Items for tax
ation. Bills have been introduced to tax crude
oil one crnt.per gallcn, and coal mintd by private
parties, one cent per ton. Cororations are now
charged three centi per ton. From tbe fact that
the Stale Treasury is now bankrupt, and new
means of raising revenue must be devised, we
deem these two natural products of our State
proper subjects for taxation. It is pretty clear
that we must have more State tax, and It Is well
enough that the Legislature has thus early start
ed out In the right direction. If a law Ii pass
ed taxing oil and coal, fir State purposes, we
have no doubt that the State authorities will
soon abandon the tax on horses and cows, and
transfer the revenue raised from hotel licences
to the county Treasury and in this way mea
surably release real estate. CUarfitli Republi

"As It Mat Haiten" Is one of the most
thoroughly original stories wo havo nad for
many a day. Its characters nro novel, tho plot
is original, ana tho Incidents have n slrango
mingling of tho ludicrous nnd tho tragic. Tho
story opens In a lonely hut, occupied by nn old
man his aged housckecpcr, and a little girl. They
live isolated, encouraging no friendships. Tho
old housekeeper dies nnd Is buried, nnd tho
old man dnd the beautiful girl is left nil alone,
with, no compnition except n savsgo mastiff
dog, which is n wonderful conception of canino
intelligence, and plays nn important nart In
the story. But, notwithstanding tho seclusion,
me beautiful girl finds a loter, and tho old mi.
scr sets himself to work to break off the match
Tho history here introduces half a dozen noted
characters, who play nn exciting part In tho
villainies and tragic history which follow, Ni
summary even enn bo given in n short review
of the working out of the skillfully doviicd plot.
The story, the author we do not know, is tho
work of a genuiusj nnd whilo many of tho
sketches are overwrought and improbable,who
evcr takes up the book will find themselves ab
sorbed in tho strange history, nnd will bo un
willing to lay it down until tho mystery is
solved, llie pleasant ending of tho story is
wholly commendable. Ihe excitement and in
tercst continues to the close of tho volume.

The sale of Montana City in Conynghara
