"Il Is customary at this season of tlie year for
some of tho city papers to poke fun at those
weekly papers that omit an Issue during the lioll.
days. They don't understand the work of the
man who edits a local weekly psper. and who
has abundant reason to he very thankful for the
brief respite, not from labor probably, but from
care and anxiety, during tho wk of Christ
ma". Country journalism has wonderful lm
proved of late years. The average editor of a
weekly paper l In much better circumstances
than was the case before the war; he lives more
on Mi own resources and allows himself greater
liberty In most respects) but, for all this, the
life of the country editor Is anyth'ng but a life
of luxury. He docs not have a stall of editors
with special qualities filling Into the varlwis
departments, studying tho movements of men
and the drift of events; he rarely has any as
sistance, and, whlta he doesn't get out a news,
paper every day, ho Is liable to write as many
columns during the week as will be turned out
by (be average editor on the stall of a city dat
ly. In addition to this tho country cdiior has
got to go about himself, ovcr considerable lo
cal territory In search of facts; to look after 'he
business of hisoflice; to bother with all sorts of
folks who rarely trouble the city editor, but
who seem born to worry the country edllor to
within an inch or two of his grave; to help out
with job work during ihe holiday ruli ; to read
his own proof; to keep his own books; to do
a hundred and one things which never come to
liuther the city editor, who fancies it's cunning
lo say something sarcastic about suspending a
weekly iiew.pmier fin account of Christmas.
The edllor who thus suspend" his paper does
not always get his holiday, because he is al
inn"! invariably driven lo employ the time
drumming up delinquent subscribers and col'
lecting hills. If people who subscribe for ihe
local paper and read them with so much prof.
it would pay for their cnterlninmenment more
promptly there would be little (rouble about
printing the paper every week In the year, and
the editors would like to do it

The prevailing passion of the Junior editor
at present is a desire to know who stole the larg
est chicken in his coop last Saturday night. If
the gullly party knew that he had been prepar
ing his poultry for tho holidays by feeding them
on a mixture of strychnine and olher things, so
prepared that it does not apparently alTect the
chickens but Is sure to kill the man who eats
their llcnh, (he lliief would have left him in tl

future protection he has obtained from Edison
nt great expense an electric machine which ex
plodes a nitro glycerine bomb shell on the ap
proach at night of ahy one but Ihe owner. It
is so arranged ihal it blows Ihe body into min
ute atoms and scatters them to the winds, hut
leaves the clothing intact. This accomplices
three purposes; it saves tho expense of a funer
al, preserves the chicke's, and furnishes n
means cf identifying the deceased by hisclothis
For fear the machine might not work, however,
the owner takes the precaution lo (il at a back
window all night with a double barrel shot gun.
The only difficulty about this is that there is
danger of killing all the chickens instead of the
thief. -Do not therefore attempt to steal any
moro of our chickens. We haven't got any
thickens.
