Petitions aro being circulated throughout the

asking the coming Legislature lo appropriate
money for the puipoe of extending the Tide
Water Canal to Chlcllie, a distance of about
three miles, and the building of a dam! part
way across the river, and thus do away willi tho
Columbia dam and allow the frto pasage of

objections, but the enormous cost of the .work
for the b'lieut of the people who live between

An exchange has the following sensible ad
vice to young folks : "The best advice we can
give lo Ihe younj folks, of either sex, is lo learn
a trade. our parents keep you no sr, but you
will, at some future period, have to keep your
self, if you live, and recollect he or she who
has no trade or occupillon, lives by choice.
The best leg icy parents can leave their children
is a knowhjlge uf bow lo support themselves
honorably, This cannot be done so welt with
out a with a trade. Young people should not
neglect this advice. Dr, Franklin says that
people who B-"t out to live by their wits often
break for want of stock. Then don't turh up
your noses at a trade at any honorable cccu
patlon but rather be proud of it. Let the
hoys learn trades, aud let the girls learn trades
too. There are many up and downs ' In life,'
and one who Is rich to-day" may Ca poor lo-mor-ruw.
