"Squaring It." 1
A good story has been told of a ji.pirjg
officer having been victimized by a brother
officer who was noted for his cool deliber
ation and strong nervea and of his "getting
quart" with him in the following manner.
The cool joker Captain Blakeny was al
afi quizzing the lisping officer a lieuten
ant for his nervousness, and Bald one day
mm, "Why, nervonsness Is all noosene;
I UU you, no brave man is ever nervous."
Will," Inquired his lisping friend, "how

you'd get peppered?" "How?" said the
oiptain, with a look at the other Officers.
"Take it cooly, and spit on the fuse." The
party broke up and all retired.
Tae next morning a number of soldiers
rsre assembled on parade, when along came
the lisping lieutenant. Lazily opening his
yes, he remarked to a cluster of officers, "I
want to try an ektheriment thlth mprnlng,
and thee how eklheedingly cool, Tom
Blakeney can be." Saying this, he walked
deliberately Into the captain's quarters,
where a fire was burning on the hearth, and
placed in its hottest part a powder canister
sad instantly retreated. There was but one
door of egress from tho quarters, and that
opened upon the parade ground ; the occu
pant gave one look at tho canister, compre
hended the situation, and in a moment made
for the door, but it wa, fastened on the out
aide. "Charley, let me out, if you love me!"
shouted the Captain. 'Thpit on the emi

snatched up a blanket to cover himself with;
but soon dropping it, he raided Hie window,
and out he bounded, sans everything but a
very short under garment, und thus with
hair almost on end, he dashed ou ton full
parade ground. The shout which hailed
him brought out the whole of the occupants
of the barracks to co what was the matter,
and tho dignififd captain pulled a sargeant
in front of him to hide himself. 'Why
didn't you thpit on it?' inquired the lieuten
ant. "Because there was no sharp-shooters
in front to stop a retreat,' replied the cap
tain. 'All I've got to thay, then, ith that
you might thafly have done it; for I'll

This humorous hit is from a Paris paper: A
Brazilian count, a billionatc was dioinat the
table de'hole of a fashionable hotel. H is cutlet
was to his taste, and ho ordered another"
''Wb only givo one cutlet," eaid the mana
ger, "and no bread with one Csh ball."
Without a word thej count rose, went to,
bought tho hotel, returned, led the manager to
the front door and kicked him down tho btcr,
then reseating himtelf at the table, said:
"Br ing me another cutlet."
They biought it, swift as tho eagle cleaves
the air.

Clover. Clover is called, and properly so,
tbe sheet-anchor of Auieucan husbandry.
It Is capable of doing mote to bring iinpover
shod lands to a high stato of cultivation with
lees expento than any other aency. And
just in proportion as the farmer cultivates
this plan will ho be teleivcd from tbe necessity
of purchasing commercial fertilizers to enrich
tbe land. There is no fcyttem of cultivation
to enable the fanner to keep tbo fertility of
bis land without resorting to eucb agencies, yet
the use of clover will do for you what tho mira'
cles did for Motes. It will do no more; it will
cancel notes, pay mortgages, extinguish obli
gallons, and bringabundanco where tbcro )s
want.
Tbo prfMUt cheapness of fodder is said
to make a difference of $2,000 per week in feed
