rinntlng la Rcncrnlly finished beforo this
tlmo. Trees llmt linvc been properly heeled
In will be sufficiently retnrded to allow them
to bo sent from the nurseries. Trees In
transit In wnnn weathe aro llahlo to Inju
ries. Grafting Is one of the operations that had
better be done too late than too early. The
proper tlmo is when the swelling nf the buds
shows vegetation to bo active and it is risky
to do it earlier. Tho most successful graft'
ing of an orchard wo ever saw, was done
while tho tree was In full blumn. At this
season the bark slips readily and earn Is re
quired In sawing off Urn limb', not to strip
ll and make a bad wound. It is better now,
to quite cut through the bark with a strong
knife nil Around where tins saw Is to work.
Grafting wax for ue now should have more
resin in it, to mako it harder, than that ap
plied in cooler weather.
Buns Bi'.lowtiii: Grt.vrr. A gentleman
about to graft informed us that ho was ad
vised by "a professional," to "scrape the
branches," In order to remove, every bud be
low the gral, and called to inquire as lo
tho propriety of thi. Whenever a bud starts
into growth, the sap flows towards that bud.
Tho buds on the eion are dormant, and will
remain so until a union is formed with the
ftock, sufficient for that to supply the clon
nithsnp O allow Its buds to commence
prowtli. If the stock or its branch is entire
ly deprived of bud,the sap has little Induce
ment to ascend, but if the buds are left near
ly up to tho point where thu grafts are in
serted, their starting will cause an abundant
supply of nutriment to flow to them, and
the chances of the success of the grufts great
ly increased. When tho buds on the cions
have commenced to grow and not until
then the young shoots Iclow are to be
broken or rubbed off.
Insects will increase as the supply of food
becomes abundant. Kggs of the Tent Cuter
pillar that havo escaped observation, will
now hatch, and the small caterpillars will
commence to feed, making their web", or
"tents" whjle yet small ; these are best seen
while the dew is on them, in early morning.
ijye, wuuewasn, petroleum aim oilier
things' have been advised, to be applied with
a swab. The quickest, easiest, and surest
way is to remove the web, morning or even
ing, when all are at home, by the hand
gloved or not and throw It upon the ground
and stamp it. Uorers in the apple ami
quince are detected by their sawdust, and
by a depression in the smooth bark, thoio
in the peach and other stone fruits by an
exultation ol gum. Tuey must bo cut out,
or be probed and punched to death by means
of wire. Curculio, on stone fruits general
ly, bat on tho plum particularly, begins
work as soon as the fruit is set; j.irring the
tree, catching the insects on u cloth, and
then killing them is tho only remedy, 'ant
.ice often cover tho young shoots ; strong
soap suds or tobacco water will kill them
on low trees the branches may be bent
down and dipped; on others the liquid
must ue jreeiy appneu by a syringe or gar
den pump.
Young Trees should have the. soil kept
clean and mellow among them, and, espec
ially if set this spring, should havo inurh
bcllire dry weather seta in. A tree properly
planted rarely needs stakes, but if any are
disposed to grow crooked, it is best to reme
dy thl3 while they aro young, and stake
them.
Mulching is of great benefit to a largo
share of tho small fruits. A mulch, while
it prevents evaporation and overheating the
soil, allows the rains to ss through, and
by preventing the beating of storms, keeps
the soil mellow and porous, llccause thoe
who live near the coaft often write of the
benefits from Using salt hay, many have an
idea that this is the necessary material or a
mulch. Whatever mechanically protects
tho soil and meets the above named condi
tions may be used. l!og hay, straw (always
abundant iu grain districts), corn stalks,
chips (cawdust is not advisable, as it .breed
fungi), spent tan bark, litter fioni stables,
and even small stones, havo all been suc
cessfully used for tho purpose.
STr.Avui:aitir.s.-The sooner the mulch
is applied, the better: aside from its other
uses it is importaut in keepiugthe fruit
clean. In some states tho harvest isflover;
in others it is now at its height, wh'ile it is
still anticipated elsewhere. We saw (April
10) a fine lot of South Carolina berries, with
their value diminished one-half because an
over-ripe berry or two was iu each basket.
The further tho diltance the fruit is to he
sent, the lets ripe it should be. For near
markets, the fiuit is best picked into the
baskets, acd not again handled ; but if to
be en route for twenty-four hours or more,
it snoula be picked in flat baskets, taken to
a shady place to cool olf, and then carelully
assorted and put into the baskets or cups,
taking care to put in not a single berry so
ripe that it will soften and crush on the pas
sage. The precise degree of ripeness can
only bo learned by experience, but it Is safe
to say, in general terms, that for a trip of
twenty-four hours, no full-colored .fruit
should be packed.
The White Glub often makes sad woik
with strawberries, and their presence is nut
known until the mischief is done. When a
strawberry plant wilts, take it up and search
for the grub before it gets to and eats the
roots from another plant.
Illackbeirifs and Itaspberries will now be
making their growth of cans for next year's
fruiting. Three or four cans aro usually
enough for each stool, all others are to he
cut away. As soon as tall enough, tie tlicm
to the Btake or trellis, and when they reach
the desired height, stop them by pinching
out the top. Three or four feet is enough
for raspberries, and six or seven for black
berries. If rust appears, cut aud burn the
diseased stems.
Cowukts and Goo.si:iiEi;r.na. No
plants are more benefitted by a mulch than
these ; very little manure is excellent for
t'lemj It tends to prevent mildew and great
ly prolongs the season. The currant worms
must be taken In hand at their first appear
ance; tho Insect deposits its eggs on the
under side of the lower leaves, and If u
watch Is kept for these much trouble may
be avoided by crushlrjg the eggs. As soon
as the leaves appear to be eaten begin the
war. While hellebore is the efficient reme
dy. It is sold at the drug stores In fine
powder. This may be sifted upon the bush
es, but it Is better to apply it with a little
water, Put a tablespoonful of the ponder
Into a bowl or other vessel, and pour on a
little boiling water; thoroughly stir until
the powder is all wetted, then add more
boiling water, a quart or so, Stirling to com
pletely mix it; puur this into a pail, filling
the pall with cold water. Apply this with
a syringe or gardeu pump; in tbreednysnp
ply again ; if more worms appear, repeat.
Three applications are usually sufficient.
Grape Viues,lu northern localitlcs.at least,
do not need a mulch ; they do better with
their roots In warm soli. As the shoots develop
lime will often Le found a caterpillar en

than may bo supposed, though as It

Tuikhh Assault on Miotic, July 27. 1 ISO
To prevent the construction of supplemen

hours was hurled through the breach.
sunrise on the 27th of July came the assault,
1 lie defeuders, lying ou tlie inner slope
the mound ot ruins, worn out with loug
natcuing aud continuous uproar, wero most
ly sunk in that deep sleep of utter weariness
so well Known to the soldier. Iiefore they

groups of Turk had scaled the ramparts on
either side of the gap, and were firing down
into it, while a body of some five hundre
had succeeded iu Hanking the lino and en
tering Jew Street.
The Grand Master, conceiving that the
hour of martyrdom was at hand, unfurled
the great standard of St. John and called
upon bis knights to follow him to death
Their first charge broke and slaughtered to
the last man tho unbelievers who had pen
etrated the city. Next they rushed to tho
captured ramparts; the stairs were choked
with rubbish, but they mounted on
ladders, the Turks meanwhile hurtling
stones aud pouring in missiles. Twice
wounded, twice pushed down Ihe ascent
D Abusson was the first to reach tho sum
mit, aud the first lo drive his half-pike into
an (Jsmauli, beveral others fell under his
thrust, and meantime his companions wero
by his side, swiftly regaining the walls.
l'lila-ologus hurried forward a chosen body
of janizaries to the support of his escaladers.
Twelve of them, bound by a solemn oath to
slay the Grand Master, fought their way up
to li I in , aud pierced bis armor iu three pla
ces. Ills followers, horror-stricken and
roused to frenzy, rushed on the assailants
willi renewed fury, sweeping them down the
steps and out of the breach. A geneial rout
followed, bearing away tho pasha himself,
and tumbling back the fugitives into tie
Turkish intrenchme nts, while the swords of
tho Christians sprinkled the way with their
blood.
It was the final churl of the invaders, and
the final triumph of the defenders. Ou the
19th of August, after a furious siege of three
months, I'alai withdrew his armament, car
rying away 15,000 wounded and leaviog
0000 dead. It grieves one to learn that the
.renegade escaped the bonstringof his wrath
ful master, and was merely punished for ids
failure with the loss of his dignities aud
banishment to Gallipoli. llarjxr't Maya
