THE COLUMBIAN AND DEMOCRAT, BLOOMSBUEG, COLUMBIA COUNTY, PA. BaOCSWA7& ELWELL, Editors. BTiOOMSBURG, PA. frtilny, April Qth. 1878. MUSTER'S M3T I.KTTI'.ll. Tho following letter, addressed to Patrick Tully and Peter McHugh, was written by I'utrick Hester, two days before luscxecii lion. My Dear Friends : I writo these few lines to both of you. I fupposo it is about my last writing on this earth, as I beliovo our time in this world is short, and may God prepare us for the. next and better world. This I want our father eonfo'sor to read to both of you, in leganl to our present situation, and in regard to what I am convicted ol. In the first place Kelly sworo that ho and us met at Uarnoy DolunV, mid went from there to Ashlnud with him. Next Morris Morrison swore that he saw you in company with Kelly und others on tho morning alter Vonahuo was taken, going to my botii-c. This also you know is a he. Next Harris swears ho saw mo with a nuin lier of others at iho toll gate on tho morning of ltea's death. This nloO is a lie, and botli of you know it to bo a lio ; and in fact every other one that swore againit me nt tho rob niary Couit swore false. This I will fend with our father confessor to reul to both of you No one knows any- thins aboutthis.bnt tho man that dos know nml should know iill"ubout. this affair. The mason I writo this is to let you noW that be fore I die I will relate these facts and thV i'alc perjury that has been sworn against mo. I do declare anil will declare that I am not cuilty of the murder of A. W. Ilea, that I never got up that job. or plot that has been Bworn against me and that both of you know, I writo this to let you know what I intend to do and will do, but at tho same time, I will ay nothing to hurt any of your feelings. This is one thing that I do ask and request of both of you, as I believe and know that both of you can say I am not guilty of tli death of Rea. and that with n clear con ieieuee, not that I beg any favors of you.only what is hone it and true before Ood, and may God do what is right, that is if you want to do what is just and right, yet you are freo as to that part, to do what is right, and may God direct every ono to do what is right, und may Goil forgive them that is tho cause of my being here. What I feel roost sorry about is my poor family to bo left desolate.poor and forlorn, and I might say homeless, all by this means, and all that was done was done for you as well as me. Thero was nothing spared or left undone that could benefit either you mo, and it was done and not grudged. And as for death, I am not afraid, for I am almost tired of this sinful world, for they are after mv life these good many years. All that troubles mo about dying is to die of what am not guilty of, and that both of you know. and may God in His mercy do what is just and right to all. From the first day up to this present day the whole weight and abuse is thrown on top of my back, through the publio press and also through tho communr ty. Please give tho answer on the return of t'.iis, and if I have said anything in this that is not true, nlease state it also. No moro at present, and God have mercy ou our souls. Patrick Hester Saturday, March 23, 1878. Ab stated in these columns two weeks ago, ITcs'ter and M cllugh both admitted their guilt on Sunday, the day before tho execution The abovo letter was written before Hester knew that Tully had confessed. Tho follow ing is a tcquel to tho whole matter. Rev Father Koch, of St. Edward's Roman Catholio Church, Shamokin, on Sunday told his congregation that Hester, Tully and MoHueh were all guilty of tho murder of Ilea : that they! all. admitted their guilt to him before the execution, and that the letter written by Hester and published in tho pa pers should never have been published and he advised Mrs. Hester so; that the letter was written for tho express purposo of influenc ing Tully and McHugh to assert Hester's in nocence on the scaffold, and that Hester him c elf never intended having tho letter pub lished. Some persons, ho said, had intima ted that ho had gone to Bloomsburg to uec his Influence on Tully and McHugh, and try to persuade them to assert Hester's innocence. He declared this to be untrue, as he , went there for no such purpose, and if Tully and McHugh had dono so they would have died with perjury on their lips. Tne Valley Forge Centennial. This morning this place was the scene of a railroad rollts ion, which has ended in loss of life. When the freight train, which left Mauch Chunk at 4 o'clock this morning, reached here, the engineer stopped to cool a hot journal. Instead of side-tracking, he remained on the regular line, and in n tew minutes a mixed train, composed of four freight and forty oil tank cars, dashed into the rear of the first train. The force of the collision threw several cars from the track, and some of these, toppling over on the Lehigh Valley Railroad bridge, broke through the latter, making it a total wreck. The collision also expLdcd the boll er of the engine of the latter train, and this set fire to the oil cars. As quickly as possi ble some twenty of the lalter, wliich, although not burning, were threatened by tho flames were uncoupled nud pushed back by the frightened citizens, who were now alarmed for the safely of their town. The flames however, communicated to Brown & Wil liams' machine shop and foundry, and also to' the Lehigh Valley depot. The latter was saved, but the former was totally destroyed. involving a loss of about $00,000. During the progrcs of the fire an oil tank exploded killing one. man and severely burning about a dozen more. Jacou.-IJumniell and his wife, who lire in a houso somo distance from tlio depot, made a very narrow escape. A por tlon of tho boiler of tho exploding engine crushed through the roof, struck tho bed in which they were sleeping, but, fortunately. not injuring them in the least. LATER. The explosion of tho oil tank was caused by an attempt to empty it from below. When about half tho-oil had been drawn off tho flames rushed in and created the explosion Tho high winds that prevailed in the morning at one time threatened to destroy the town and steamers und assistance were sent from Mauch Chunk. The firemen went to work immediately upon their arrival, and about 10 o'clock the flames were gotten under control There aro several conflicting reports as to who is to blame for the collision. There is signal here, and it was the duty of the hind brakeman to signal the oil train, which was at present running irregularly. Engineer John Watmere and Fireman Win. Mos' scr assert that the signal was not turned so as to signal tbem back, and several citizens confirm their statement. Even if they had been signalled it would havo been impossible to stop the tram, which was a heavy one.run ning down grade. Both Watmere and Mosscr were slightly injured by jumping from their engines before tho collision. The loss which cannot be estimated at present will be heavy- Tbo names of the killed and burned aro as follows: Wm. Shoemaker, killed; Daniel Rcbu, Ed. Sicbert, Geo. Jones, John Kehncr, Aaron Snyder, Wm. Kain, Joseph Goldberg, John Rohrbach, Love Hughes, Samuel Marshall, and Arthur Williams, burned and wounded, four or five of whom are not ex pected to recover. Since the first explosion thero has been two others, neither of which have done any considerable damage. Ex. Governor Moses, of South Carolina has been arrested in New York for forgery. He languishes in a prison cell waiting for bail. Doctors Gave Him Up. 'Is it possible that Mr. Godfrey is up and at work and cured by so simple a remedy V 'I assure that it is true that he is entirely cured and with nothing but Hop Bitters and only ten days ago his doctors gave up and said he must die 1, ' We'ha-day I If that is so, I will go this minute and get some for my poor George.
