THE COLUMBIAN AND DEMOCRAT,BLOOMSBUKG, COLUMBIA COINTY, PA, Miseelaneous. Westminster Abbey. Most peojilo hftvo lieaM of tlie grnrM old Miliey nt' Westminster, In Tondon, and many would be glad to visit this famous historical place. J had often been there. In my thoughts and dreams, And had often wished that I might walk through Its quiet aisled and chnpels, when, at last, I should mado a trip to Europe. And my wish was granted. It was on a November morning one of those darlr, gloomy mornings peculiar to London, that I started from my lodgings to walk to tho Abbey. After a little walk I came in sight of U'flininster llrldgo and the 7ouses of Par liament, and then, on my right, I noticed tho two tall towers of tho Abbey ; so I quickened my steps until I had gained tho entrance door. Il'lmt a change Irom the busy, crowded streets to this old sepulcher, and Its relics of tho dead I 1 almost shud der, tor tlin Interior ol the building was d:trk and gloomy, and I saw many cold, white figures towering high above mo. The original Abbey was built many, many years ago, and has been restored from time to time by tho succeeding kings aud queens of Eng laud, until we find It In Its present condition safe and a1 und, and ono of the greatest ob jects of interest in London. Westminster Abbey may certainly be called a tomb, for wo could spend a whole day in simply counting its monuments. There were so many of thess that I hardly knew which to look at first, but I thought It bet to follow my own iuclina lions, and so, instead of procuring a guide (men with long gowns, who take visitors around and point out the objects of greatsst interest), I roamed about at my will. The first monumentth.it attracted my attention was the vcnerablo shrine of Edward the Confessor, in tho cljapel of St. Edward, once the glory of tho abbey, but which has been much defaced by persons who were desirous of obtaining a bit of stone from this famous tomb. In this chapel I Baw also tho old coronation chairs, in which all the reigning sovereigns of England, tince Edward I. have been crowucd. They are queer, old-fash ioned chairs made of wood, and not very comfortable I imagine. The older of tho two chairs was built to encloso the stone (which they call Jacob's pillar) brought from Scotland by Edward, and placed in the chapel. Many other interesting tombs are to be seen here, and tholloorof the chap el is more than six hundred years old I I next visited tho chapel of Islip, built by the old Abbot of Islip, who dedicated it to St. John the Baptist. Ono very interesting monumCDt there was to tho memory of Gen eral Wolfe, who fell, you remeber at tho bat tle of Quebec. Ills monument is a very beautiful piece of art. It represents him falling into tho arms of one of his own holdiers, who is pointing to Qlory, which comes in shape of an angel from the clouds, holding a wreath with which to crown tho hero. A highland sergeant looks sorrowfully oi the dying warrior, whiIe two lionsjsleepat his feet. The inscription reads as follows : "To the memory of James U'olfe, Major General and Commander-in-Chief of the British land forces on an expedition against Quebec, who, after surmouuting, by ability and valor, all obstacles of art and nature, was slain in tho moment of victory, on the lllth of September, 1759, the King and Par liament of Great Britain dedicate this mon ument." I now walked on to the north transept, and the first monument I noticed was one erected to Sir Kobert Peel, the great orator and statesman. I seated myself on an old stone bench to rest, and looking around.saw a 'magnificent statue of the great William Pitt, who, you may remember, was also, a great statesman, and accomplished more fur the glory and prosperity of England than any other statesman who ever lived. In this transept there is a beautiful window, which represents our Savior, the twelve apos tles, and four evangelists. As I was sittinj quietly in this se cluded spot, looking up at the window, strains of solemn music reached my ear, which sounded as if they came from ono of tho gloomy vaults (round me. I walked on to discover, if possible, whence this mu sic came, and I saw in the nave of the Ab bey, the Dean of Westminster conducting a service, assisted by his choir boys. I seated ' myself until the ceremonies were over, and I thought it was a very odd place to hold church among so many graves. After tho Dean and his choir boys had dis appeared I commensed my wnlk again, anil saw roauy fino old monuments. One of theo was in memory of Sir Isaac Newton, and I am euro I need not tell you who he was. Prominent among the monuments in this part of the Abbey is that to Major An dre, the fine young officer who was executed during our Iteyolutlotiary war, I next visit the south transept, better known as tho "Poets Corner," which I think is the most interesting part of Westminster. A hundred, and more, monuments to tho memory of great men can be seen here ; but I can only tell of alew of tho most im portant. Tho one I thought most of is erected to tho memory of William Shaks. peare, although his bones repose far away in the little church at Stratford-on-Avon Then I saw the tombs of David Garrlck, the great actor and delineator of Sbakspeare's characters; Georgo Frederick Handel, the eminent composer, the author of that beau tiful anthem, "I know that my Iledeemer llveth ;" the great Milton j rare old Hen Jonson j Edmund Spencer, author of the "Ricry Qucene ;" and thoseof Soutl o.Dry. den, Addison, Gray, Campbell, and other well-known English poets. Then among the names of the dead of 011 day, I saw those of Dickens, Iiulwer, Ma caulay, and Dr. Livingstone. King", Queens, statesmen, soldiers, cler gymen, authors and poets here have equal station. Socio may lie under richer tomhs than others, but all lie under the vaulted roof of 'Wetmlnter Abbey, the place of highest honor that England an olfer her departed Bons -Ctarlt II" fijuirei, it, A'icholatfor March. "Well," said a fellow in an undertone, who stood in tlie rear of the court,"these lawyers will say anything. I saw tlio man get out of u cab at the court door." It cast a gloota over an entire church fair the other night when the ministers win walked up to tho grab bag and prlze-cakc table, and demanded that the game be ex plained to him before he bought his chips. At the trial of a criminal case in th Main tupreme court recently the prisoner entered a pica of "not guilty," when one i.f the jurymen put on his liat and started for the door, ihe judge called him back nnd iuforucd him that ho could not leave until the case was tried.
