and no Inferior person can plow or sow tho

iho emperor Is rice. The governor of the
provlnco and the mayor of the city then Im
itate the emperor In plots reserved for
them, using Implements of a red color, and
sowing millet,
Afterward tho emperor an J attendant prin.
ces nnd offlclals proceed to the, Temple of
Agriculture, which Is dedicated to Shin
Nnn, or the "Divine Husbandman," tho
fabulous originator of tho art. Here bul
locks, Bwlne, and shepp are ofTered In sacri
fices, and prayers made to Shln-Nug and
also to the god of thej land, tho god of tho
grain, the god of the ocean, the god of the
wind, the god of thunder, and the tfod of
ralr. Tliey are also very particular to wor
ship what Is called the god of tho year. In
ancient times, this was the planet Jupiter,
hut at present tho officers who ndvio and
net for tho emperor in these matters can
onlze what mid whom they pleaso.
Similar plowing nnd worshiping nro per.
formed by the leading mandarins near tho
aouth.gatcs of nil the principal cities of the
empire; after which tho mandarins mount
n platlorm j and, calling around them the
principal farmers of tho vacinlty exhort
them to the proper discharge of their duties
as husbandmen. At tho clo?o of tho ad-
drescs, they present to each of the farmers
wiio have been selected to receive them cer-
tiln presents or med.ils in the name of the
-mperor, in order to encourage and stimu
la'e them to diligence in their calling.
Apart from tho idolatrous worship, thl
conduct of tho emperor and his officials is
vory praiseworthy ; but it is sad to know
that while "God has not left himself with
out witness among them in that he does
good, and seDds them rain and fruitful sea
sons, filling their hearts with lood and glad
ness," they yet do not recognize his ejtis
tinco nnd beneficence, butgive his glory to
others and his praise to graven images.'

Whore Flowers Camo From.
Some of our flowers came from land of
p'rpctual summer, some from countries of
ice aud snow, some from islands in,the
ocean. Three of our sweetest exotics camo
ongiuauy irom rem ; tne camena was
carried to England in 1739, and n few years
utterward the heliotrope nnd mignonette.
Several others camo from the Cape of Good
Hope; a very largo calla was found in ditches
ther, nnd some of tho most brilliant gerani
ums, or pelargoniums which are n spurious
geranium. The verbena grovs wild in Bra
zil ; the marigold is an African llower, nnd
.numbers come from China and Japan. The
littlo Daphne was. carried to Erjglam) by
Captain lloss, from almost the farthest lnnd
he visited towards the north pole. Sonic of
tlieso are quite changed in form by cultlva'
tion ; others have only become larger and
brighter ; while others, despite of nil the
aire of florists and the shelter of hot-houses,
fell far shon of the beauty nnd fracrnnce of
tne tropics.
Among improved ones is the dahlia,
When brought to Europe it was a very sim
pje blossom, a single circle of dark petals
surrounding a mass of yellow ones. Others,
with scarlet and orange petals, were rooii af
ter transplanted from Mexico, but still re
mamed simple dowers. Long years of culti
vation in rich soil, with other arts of skill
fill florists, have changed it to what it now
is a round ball of beauty. Jliverside Maga

To Tell a Horse's .j;e.
Up to the perioil when a colt has a full set
of teeth the peculiar character of them is a
good indication of the age of the animal.
After that age of the horse is indicated by
the wearing down of the teeth. When a
colt is one year old he has cut twelvo.nip
pers and bixteen grinders. During tho
second year the permanent teeth begin to
npptur nnd the nippers become worn. Dur
ing the third year the milk or first teeth fall
outand.are replaced by permanent teeth,
which ate larger than the first ones. Tho
grinders are alio increased to six in each
jaw. At fivo years the mouth is complete.
After six years no reliance can be placed
on the teeth as an indication of age, as it is
obvious much depeiids on the manner of
feeding the horse. If he is pastured to any
extent the teeth become worn down sooner
than if he had been fed on soft food. iY. Y,

KniployEient for Women.
The subject of tho employment of women
is as vital to the rich as to the poor. Mr.
Emerson's remark with regard to the regula
tion of the body holds equally for the soul
be is rich, and would be well,, let lilm live
as if he wero poor. We talk of the lazy
poor because they are a burden to the com
munity ; are not tho lazy rich, after nil, the
rottenness at the core? "Every woman,
from the Queen on the throne to the little
l'ippa who passes every day to the filature,
has her work to do and is responsible for
the due performance ot it. All service rank,
the samo with Ooil. All are servants equally
in His sight."
What a picture would the life of the aver
age woman of l-'iflh Avenue or lleacon St.,
present to us if ve should lay It down with
out exaggeration on paper I Her scheol-
days over, it is her liubit to walk into the
brcakfast-iooin at nine o'clock, just from
her bed, her front hair twisted over pins or
bits of silk. She lounges, reading the news
paper, chatting with others as purposeless as
heelf, warming her feet or gazing out of
window, until eleven ; then she retires to
arrange her toilet for the evening, perhaps
to examine clean clothes from the wash, or
perform some other household duty duties
not to be omitted, but which the economical
woman (one who has learned the value of
time) would have completed before the day
began ; then she dresses for afternoon calls
and list In hand, decends to the lunch table.
Here nearly another hour fades away before
she begins her eAernoon round, flitting from
linuso to house cheerfully chatting of the
fihauijhrain,i ilsqn , Kellogg of every th I ng
in short, which concerns the shows of life,
but careful as one walking over pitfalls to
avoid every subject of vital Interest either
to herself or others. Then, the visits or
ilrlvo ended, the hurries homo in time to
dress for dinner, and go somewhere after
ward, as if to exhaust to tho last drop her
own vital strength and the hours c f the day,
'i his little record is not overdrawn. With
certain modification, thts Is the substance
of the life of wives and daughters of well-to-do
merchants in our cities. Theso day r9
varied by certain mornings given to music
and others to painting. Hut how smalt the
average of those who achieve ntiythlng
wortli doing I A man to bo a painter must
not paint with half his mind. The samo
law holds good of the woman.
Let every woman apply to her own lift)
the doctrine of selection. The man is bred

rents are nsked, and boys In the public school
conftdo to each other the profosslon ol their
choice. No one asks the girl what is to be
her employment, what sho is preparing for.
Tho days of her pleasant school life glide
by one after another ; frequently no accurate
scholarship has been required of her ; nnd
when tho routine stops she Is without rud
