In years pit New York was supposed tolead the country in the amount of business transac ted and in the skill with which her merchants nltracted orders and customers from all parts of the Union. In those days, now past, all for eign steamers landed at her wharves, and she had some advantages over her sister city of Philadelphia, which do not now exist. Tho only lino of steamers carrying the Amer ican thg sails weekly from and to Philadelph ia and her merchants receive their foreign ship ments direct, without the delays incident to the New York custom house. In the matter of tilling orders by mail, which now has grown to be such an immense business, Messrs. Straw bridge & Clothier, of Philadelphia, are leading the country. The promptness with which orders for dry goods and requests for samples are filled by this wide-awake house is surprising. A letter ahlres-ed to this firm, instead of having to wait its turn, is answered by return mail, and all orders executed, not only satisfactorily and immedialely, but at prices with which few houses can compete. New York will have to look to ils laurels if its merchants expect to keep ahrc.i't of such a Philadelphia house as that of Strawbridge & Clothier, FHECIC VS. LOCUST MOUNTAIN COAL CO. The case of Joseph M. Freck vs. the Locut Mountain Coil & Iron Company was argSied in the Supreme Court recently. It is an action in trespass brought by the company against Mr. Freck. The latter leased certain lands for a term of ten vears in Centralia from the Locust Mountain Coal & Iron Company, with the right to dig, mine and take away coal fiom perilled limits in the Centreville basin in Co lumbia county. In 1S70 the lease expired and the property reverted t-i the company, when it is alleged to have been discovered that in the course of hi workings Mr. Freck had worked beyond the limit of his lease and thus injured ihc Centralia mine, which is owned by the Locust Mountain Coil Company. The case was previously tried in the Court o Common Pleas No. 2, of Philadelphii, and under the charge of the Court a verdirt of damages in the sum of $17,000 was rendered agiinst Freck and in fivor of tho company. The case was removed to the Supremo Court by Mr. r reck on assignments of error. The ci-e was conclu ded, but a decision will probably not be ren- dered for some lime to cuiiie. It. llrockway, one of the counsel for the pri-oners accompanied the Sherifl'to the j lil last Wedncsdaj evening to read them to the prisoners. The party first entered the cell of Pat rick Tully. He was cool and collected, but licfb'-e the Slicriu" commenced reading the fatal docu ment, requested leave to light his pip. The pirty next proceeded to the cell of Peter Mc Hugh. Hois still chained to the floor in con sequence of his attempted escape sometime ago. He listened pttieutly and without emotion to the reading of the warrant. Hester's cell was next vi-ited. He apologized for the lack of chairs, and was as courteous as if the Sheriff had brought him a pardon. The three men ex pressed their thanks to the Sherifl for the quiet and modest manner in which he had performed his duty, and for excluding the large number who requested to be present at the reading of the warrants. The Sheriff is entitled to credit for respecting their wishes. It is certainly a depraved taste that would gloat on the misery of three human beings on the verge of death, and such morbid curiosity should be restrained.
