and then basted it up, in accordance with

At a, little, after nine o'clock, when the
lights ha.l been extinguished, and a teach
er made the nightly rounds, a Catnancht
scout quietly closed and bolted the iron
doors and relighted tho hall lamps. Then,
Tvith hair-starting war-whoops, the savages
began dropping down through the trap-door
which opened from one hall to another in
tho capacity of fire-escapes.
The Diggers, peacefully studying in their
rooms, were summarily ordered into the hall
to battle. Every man protested, but the ()a-

tbelr weapors, the assailed marched forth to

Treatment of Jlileh lows in Karly Winter.
At no season of tho year do milch cows
leeu better and more generous diet than in
early winter. The change from grass to
dry fodder is of itself sullicient cause to pro
duce more or less deramrement of health.
Uut when tho animal's tone and vigor have
beeu lowered by a long period of milking,
and she is then .subjected, at the same time,
to the rigors of winter and a chango of food
from nutritious herbage to dry, coarse and
often iuuutritious fodder, a severe tax is laid
on her system. Yet, on many farms, it is
tne practico to feed to cattle, in early winter
only coarse and inferior fodder and the
poorest hay, because theso articles have
been stored last in tho barn, or ou the tops
of the muHs, and must thercforo be disposed
of before tho better portions of the supply
can be reached. This, however, is a great
mistake, as tliu best food should be given
when the cows first go into winter quarters.
U'terwardj, when they havo been diied of
their milk and have grown accustomed to
the change of diet, the poorer food may be
used, or better still, as animals, liko men,
are fond of variety in tiieir diet, the coarser
nd less nutritious fodder may be advanta
geously ued iu conjunction with that of
better quality.
Through neglect of this precaution, how
ever, it Irequently happens that cows in
milk lose llesli in November and Decem
ber, and sink Into a bad condition to en-
luro the still more severe weather yet to be
expected. To avoid this misfortune, Iu ca
ses where poor or damaged fodder has nec
essarily to be given out first, tho feed should
bo supplemented with rations of ground
grain, oat and corn meal mixed, bran, or
hip stuff, to add a proper amount of nutri
ment to a given bulk of fodder. Compel
ling cows to consume an excessive bulk of
inferior food, in order to enable them to
support life and yield milk, overcrowds the
tomach, tends to derange health, and Is by
no means a rare cause ol uilmcuts. Among
these not the least disastrous it a serious lia
bility to abortion, caused by an undue pres
sure of the food upon the parts. Jlorever,
on the score of self interest as well as of hu
manity, cows should not be allowed to lose
flesh in early winter, fur it would require
much more food to restore them to tho good
condition iu cold weather than In summer.
Iiesides this, ns lean animals uro more sus-
ceptiblo of cold than those in flesh, and a
proportionately larger amount of the food
they consume is therefore expended in gen
erating a sufficiency of animal heat, It would
require considerably more food to carry a
poor beast through winter than a fat one,
even though nothing may be added to the
animal s condition.
Tho necessity of shelter for all kinds of
block from the storms, frosts, and incleiiv
eucy of this bleak season, has been frcqueip
tly dwelt upon, und its economy as its liu
inanity fully demonstrated. llural Xew
