cuoV A frightful accident was barely
avciicd la-t week through the handling of
lite arms. A young man eld enough to know
belter had a borrowed gun in his hand, and
playfully pointing it at a companion, a-ked
if ho should shoot him. The companion not
appreciating tlio kind offer re lied that ho
should shoot th clock, which hung above his
lit ad on tho wall. The smart young man
raied the nun, pulled the trigger, bang" went
the gnu and the clock was shivered to atoms
A little application of tlio law made for such
eases would bo a wholesome lcson. We
omit names and the place of the occurrence
as it would do no good to publish them.
The Scrantoii Republiran of Monday says
On Saturday morning, when Conductor l'olen'
train arrived at Hick's Kerry on the Illooms-
l,urg Division of the I). L. it W- liailroad, a
young lady of the above named place, Miss
Sadie Case, was at the depot to meet her sis
ter, who was returning home from lilooinshurg
where she is attending school Having greet-
cd her sister, he saw a friend in the car with
whom she wished to speak, and entering, re;
maiiied until the train started, then rushed for
the platform, running ugainst tho brakemati in
her baste, and in trying to get by him caught
her dress in the brake ratchet and was thrown
under the train, 'flic brnkeman, witli a pr.s-
once of mind which proves him a valuable
train man, seized her in nn instant nml snatch
ed her from beneath tho wheels, which, in an
other Mcond would have passed over hei body
Too much credit cannot be given to this brake-
man whose name has escaped us, nor to Con
doctor l'olen, for his promptness in stopping
the train. It is seldom wo havo to record that
specks of heroism which imperils life to save
life. Mi-s Case owes licr danger to her own
imprudence and her life to n railroad brake
man.
