Owing lo the fearful ravages of this llltlo
Insect omntifiit the wheat plant the past ca
on, It becomes of paramount Importance
that thn agriculturist be put upon his guard
In regard to thn Insect, as regard IU origin,
habits, and so fur 111 wo nrc able to point out
a remedy.
Under the naiiio vUVtptcra, signifying two
winged, aro Included all the, lnocts that
havo only t.vo wings, and are provided with
two little tti'ibbed tlireiuU iu plnce of hind
wings, and a mouth formed for sucking or
lapping. Various kinds of gnats and of Hies
are therefore Insects belonging to this order.
The proboc!s or sucker, wherewith they
take their food, is placed tinder the head,
and in many intancs can bo drawn up and
concealed partly or wholly within the cu lly
of the mouth. The young linects, liatolioil
Irnni the eggs of gnats snd iil'llle-, are fleshy
larva;, usually of a whilUli color and with
out legs. They aro commonly called mag
gots and sometimes are mistaken for worms.
They vary in thtlr forms, structure, habits,
transformation", so that it is somewhat dif
ficult to give any general description of
them. Most Insects are hatched from egg
which aro laid by the mother on the sub
stances that are to serve for food for her
young. Tho Hessian fly of this country and
of Europe is a small gnat or midge, and be
longing to tho family oalled Cecldnnvjia ilc
itructor. The iinects of his family aro very
numerous, and most of them in tho maggot
state llvo in galls or unnatural enturgenif uts
of stems, leaves, and buds of plants, caused
by tho punctures of the winged insects in
laying their eggs. The Hesian fly, wheat
fly, and some others differ trim the majority
in not producing such alterations in plants.
The Hess an tly was scientifically describ
ed by Mr. Say, in 1S17. under the name of
Cetiilonyia dettructor. It obtained its com
mon name trom a supposition that it was
brought to this country by tho Hessian
troops under the command of Sir William
Howe duriug the revolutionary war.
The iiead and thorax ol this lly are black;
the hind body is tawny and covered with
fine grayish hairs; tho wings aro blackish,
but aro more or less tinged with yellow at
tho hasp, where, nN, tluy are very narrow;
they aro fr'nged with short hairs and arc
rounded at tho end ; tho body measure
about one-tenth of an inch in length, and
the wings expand one (purler of nn inch or
morb.
Two broods nro generation, and are
brought to maturity in the cuirnj of a year,
and the (lies appear in tho spring and au
tumn. At each of these periods the tly laj
twenty or thirty eggs in a crease in the leal
of tho young plant. In about four d.iys in
warm weather, as in the present season, they
hatch, and the palo red larv;c, "true to iu
stinctor something else, crawl down the
leaf, working their way in between it and
tho main stalk, pas-ing downwards till they
come ton joict, just above which they re
main.a little above the surface of thecrouuri
with the head towards tho rootof the plant."
Here they imbibe the sap by suction alone,
and by the simple pressure of their bodies
they become embedded in the side of the
stem. Two or thrco larvio thus embeddei
serve to weaken the plant and cause it t
wither and dip. Tho larva? become full
grown in five or six weeks, then measuring
about three-twentieths of an Inch in length.
About the first ot December their skin hard
ens, becomes brown and then turns to
bright chestnut color. This is so called flax
seed state or pupariiim. Iu two or thru
weeks these semi-pupa (strictly speaking;
becomes detached from the old case. Iu
this partly developed state tho larva) re
mains through the winter. Towards tin
end of April or b. ginning or May the pupa
becomes fully funned, and in the middle 01
May the pupa comes firth from tho brown
puparium "wrapped in a thin, white skin,
which it sodn breaks and is then at liberty
to commence its depredations on the wheat
plants." The flies appear just as the wheat
is coining up in the spring ; they lay their
eggs for a period of three weeks and then
entirely disappear. The m iggotts hatched
from these egg- take the flaxseed form in
June and July and are thus found in the
harvest time, moit of them owing to their
positions on tho stalks remaining on the
stubble. Most of the flies appear in autumn
but others remain in the puparium until the
following spring, being retarded -in their
transformations beyond the usual time, as i
found to be the case with many insects; so
that the life of these individuals, from the
egg to the winged state, extends to a year or
more in length, whereby the continuation
of the spec'ia in after years is made more
sure. In the winged tate theso flies, or
utoro properly gnats, are very active, and,
though veiy small and seemingly feeble, are
' able to fly to a considerable distance in
search of field of joung grain. Their prin
cipal migrations take place in August and
September to the middle states where they
undergo their final transformation earlier
tuau in more northern localities. They
sometimes tnko wirg iu immense swarms,
and, beginning probably aided by thn wind,
are not stopped or turned from their course
' either by immntuins or rivers, lieiug at
tracted by liuht they aro very annoying in
tho evening during wheat harvest, as the
enter bouse unprotected by netting in count
less numbers.
Various means bavo been recommended
for preventing or lisseuing the ravages ol
the Hessian lly, and, further, it appears
doubtful whether any of them will ever en
tirely exterminate the insect. The stouter
varieties of wheat ought always to be chosen
and the laud should be kept iu good comll.
tion. If the nheat is sown lati some of the
eggs will bo avoided, but risk of winter kill
lug the plants will bo incurred. Too much
caunot be said In l.ivor of 11 judicious man
agement of the soil, feeding off tho crop by
cattle in the autumn, and burning the stub
ble after harvest; these precautions will ma
terially lesson the evils arising from the tic
predations nt this noxious insect. There
are several inject praltles preying on this
species, one of which pierces tho larvio
through the sheath ot the leal ; others again
destroy the fly while In tho flaxseed orsemi
pupa state. The ravages ot the Hessian fly
have been greatly checked by these parasl
tes, so that It is in nmnv localities somewhat
checked In its depredations, ltut to say the

Ono ttip tho caplaln had n clcrgynim on

tho fact. He took n great liking to this
Rev. Mr. Peters, and tall-ed with him a great
ileal ; told him yarns, gavo him tnotlisomo
scraps of personal history, and wovo n glit
tering streak of piofanlty through bis garru
lous fabric, that was refreshing to n spirit
wearyof thediill neutralities of undecoratcil
speech. Ono day tho captain said !
"Peters, do you ever read the Itible ?"
Well-yes."
"I judge It nln't often, by tho wav you say
It. Now, you tackle It In dead earnest once,
and you'll find it'll pay. Don't you get dis
couraged but bang right on. l'lrst, you
won't understand it ; but by and by thing
will begin to clear up, and then you wouldn't
lay It down to eat."
"Yes, 1'vo heard that said."
"And it's so too. Thero ain't a bonk that
begins wilh It, It lays over 'em all, Peters,
There's somo pretty tough things in it
thero nln't nny getting round that but you
stick to them and think' them out, and
when you nine got on tho lnido ever) thing's
plain as day,"
"The miracle-", too, captain ?''
"Ye-, sir! iho miracles, too, Every one
of them. Now, there's that business with
tho prophets of Us.nl ; like enough that
stumpsd you?"
"Well, I don't know-"
"Own up, now ; it stumped you. Well,
I don't wonder. Vou hadn't any experi
ence In raveling such things nut, and natu
rally It was too much for you. Would you
like to havo mo explain that thing to you.
and show you how to get at the meat of
these matters ?"
"Indeed I would, captain, if you don't
mind."
Then the captain proceeded as follows :
"I'll do it with pleasure. First, you see,
I read and read, and thought and thought,
till I got to understand what sort of peoplo
they were in tho old I'iblo times, and then
after that it was all clear and easy. Now,
this was tho way I put it up, concerning
Isaac and tho prophets of Baal. There was
some mighty sharp men amongst the public
characters of that o'd ancient day,and Isaac
was ono of them. Isaac had his fallings
plenty of them, too ; it ain't for mo loo
apologize for I-aic; he played it on the
prophets of llj.nl, and like enough he was
justifiable, considering tho odds that was
against him. No, all I say is, 'twan't any
iniraelo.and that I'll show you so's't you
cm see it yourself.
Well, limes had been getting rougher ami
rougher fur prophets -that is, prophet's of
sjac's denomination. Thero was -150 proph
ets ot Hill iu the community, and only ono
Presbyterian; that is, if Is.iao was a Pres
byterian, which I reckon ho was, but it don't
siy. Naturally, the prophets of Haal took
all the trade. Isaac was pretty low spirited,
I reckon, but he was a gooil deal of a man,
and no doubt he went .1 prophesying around,
letting un to be doing alandollicu business,
but 't.wa'ntany.tiae; hecould's't run any op
position to amount to anything. Iiy and
by things got desperate with him; besets
his head to work and thinks it all out, and
then what does he do? Why, he begins to
throw out hints that tho other parties are
this and that and t'other nothing-very de
finite, may bebut just kind of undermining
their reputations in a quiet way. This made
talk, of course, and finally got to tho king.
I'lio king asked Isaac what ho meant by bis
talk. Says Isaac, 'Oh, nothing particular;
only can they pray down fire from heaven
on an altar ? It aint much, may be, your
wajcs'y, only can they do it? That's the
idea.' tso the king was a good deal disturb
ed, and ho went to the prophets of Haal, aud
tbey said, pretty airy, that if he had an altar
ready they were ready ; and they intimated
ho better get it insured, too.
So all tho children of Israel and their pa
rents, anil the other people gathered them
selves together. Well, hero was that great
crowd ot prophets of Haal packed together
on one side, ami Jsaoo walking up and duwn
all alone on the other putting up his job.
When tiuio was called, Isaac let on to be
comfortable and Indifferent ; told the other
team to take the first innings. So they went
at it, tho n hole 40 praying around the al
tar, very hopeful and doing their level best.
They prayed an hour two hours thrco
hours and so on, dumb till noon. It
wasn't any use; they hadn't took n trick.
Of course tlioy felt kind of ashamed before
all those people, and well they might. Now,
what would a magnanimous man do? Keep
till, wouldn't he? Of course. What did
Isaac do? He graveled the prophets of
Hud every way he could think of. Says he:
lou don t speak loud enough; your God's
alecp, like enough ; or perhaps he's taking
1 walk; you want to holler, you know' or
words to that effect; 1 don't recollect tho
exact language. .Mind, I don't apologize for
Isaac he had his faulls.
Well, the prophets of Haal prayed along
tho best they knew how all the pfternooti,
and nev;r raised a spark. At last about
sundown, they were all tiickerul out, and
they owned up aud quit.
Wln.t does Isaac do now 1 Ho steps up
and sajs to some friends of his thero : 'Pour
four barrels of waler on tho altar!' Every
body was astonished ; for the othtr side had
prayed at it dry, you know, ami got white
washed. They pour it nn. Hays he, 'Heave I
on four more barrels.' Then he says, 'Heave
on fonr more.' Twelve barrels, you see, al
together. The water ran all over tho altar.
and all over thesides, aud filled up a treifch
around that would hold n couple of hogs-
heads measures itsays; I reckon Itmeaus
about a hogshead. Some of the people were
golug to put 011 their things to go, for they
allowed he wascrazy. They didn't know Is
aac. Iaae knelt down and began to pray ;
he strung along and strung along about the
hcatlu-u iu distant '.amis, and about the sis.
Unchurches, and about tho stato and tho
country at large, and about those that'H in
authority iu the government, aud all the
usual program, you know, till everybody hail
got tired and gone to thinking about some
thing else, and then, all of a sudden, when
uobody was noticing, ho outs with a match
and rakes It on the under side of his
leg, and piffl up the whole thing blazes
like a bouse afire ! Twelve barrels of water?
Petroleum, sir, pitroluun I that's what it
was!"
"Petroleum, captain 1"
"Yes, sir; tho country was full of it. Isaac
knew all about it. Vou read th Hible.
Don't you worry about the tough places.
They ain't tough when you somu to think
them out and throw light on them, There
ain't a thing In thn Hible but what l- true ;
all you want is logo prayerfully to work and
