Ii creating n renewed Interest In tho Eist,
with tho awakening let us rouse from Its
half sleep of many years this custom dear to
Iho hearts of old New Englandcrs, by pleas
ant association. Wo should not neglect
these social features of tho farm llfej but
rather should mako the most of them, and
inHulRe in them as often as opportunity of
fers. There are comparatively so few chan
ces for mitigation of the isolated farm life,
that not one of them should pass unimprov
ed. II, however, vc lojk on thehusking par
ty as n cheap means of getting the work
done, wo shall deservedly bo often disap
pointed. Especially will this be the case if
the effort is made to bring in a certain 'class
of village people and others, who have no
conception ol the. value of farm produco to
the tarmer.and whose manners aro frequent
Jy marked by boisterous coarsiness. Hut
keep this element out, and intend Iho occa
sion to be one of pleasure as vst as to get a
KooUly number or bushels of corn husked j
econd all nttc mp's at reasonable fun, with
reasonable car.- tor the corn, and it is reas'
onablo to expect a profitable and enjoyable
occasion.
In some neighborhoods where this cus
lorn has been revived, we know that the
husking season Is looked forward to witl
much pleasurable anticipation by the young
folks, and many old folks too. It Is more
the excitement of city and town life that
young people cruvetliau any other attrac
tion which drafts them away from the coun
try. So that if wecan iu part compensate
for this by such simple pleasures as the
huskings party affords, it will be for tho best
interests of all concerned to take advantage
of such opportunity. '
Even the Western farmer, with his hun
dreds of acres, and thousands of bushels of
corn, though only a small proportion of hi
crop would get btiked, could indulge in the
husking party with some profit to his pock
et and largo gain to tho social element of
his nature. We MijrKe.st that it would be
well to have tho party commence quite ear
ly in the evening, so as to give timo for
games, sinking, etc., after the hukiug is
over. Anil a word about the refreshments;
these should be of a light character, such u
fruit, light plain cake aud nuts, instead of
tho hearty meal, which eaten late in the
evening is more conducive to indigestion
and bad sleep than to nutrition or pleasure.
We it is the custom to eat a light supper at
home before starting for the liU'king, with
the expectation of the hearty meal later.und
which thus is needed after the labor of the
evening. But this is a custom baneful in its
result,as it entails irregularity in eating.and
hard work upon the housewife. As to its
being the wage of the buskers, the pleasure
should be their reward ; and if the method
proposed was prevalent in whole neighbor
hoods there would be a great saving of work
to the women, of indigestion to the busk
ers. Sheep and Turnip Husbandry in England.
Hand-in-hand these husbandries have done
more for agriculture than aught else since
the world was civilized. It is the immense
quantity of turnips, mangel wurzel, and
swedes eaten by sheep on the laud, that
chiefly keeps up the fertility of the urabie
uil, and causes the yield of wheat, barley,
oats, beaus, and peas to increase to double
tho number of bushels which were formerly
grown. This has been done, too, while in
the United Suites exactly the opposite has
been accomplished, for here the yield ot
wheat, barley, and oats has become less than
half what was grown in days of yore. The
housing of sheep by night, in Summer, is a
great detriment to the pasture they ieed on
and the severity of the Winters in the North
making it necessary to take the turnips off
the land where grown, to be eaten in barns
is a drawback to the chief benefit of the crop
for improving and renovating the so'l.
Ingenuity is a characteristic of the Amer
ican nation, and the men who shall invent
a movable cheep pen, affording shelter o
that sheep can he kept daily muved all over
the field, as the crop is eaten, will be a ben
efactor to this country, have his name han
ded down to po-terity, uinl as a still sharper
cpur to ingenuity, gather iu the shekels
abundantly j for, although the manure is
good when made und.-r cover, yet there is
loss of urine, los uftiiiiti in hauling the tur
,nlp crop, and again in carting the inuuure.
When this is made practicable, the swedes
can be put into heap of a load or two, on
the field, just as is done in England, and
covered with earth sufficiently thick to keep
out the frost. Then, with a crowbar or like
implement, it will ho easy to break into the
heaps, cut them up with a machine, and
feed exactly as is always done in Euglaud,
iu the open field.
The South will, doubtless, eventually be
the great sheep producing place, and three
turnips can be grown and consumed by the
sheep; but, by improving the grass lan1 and
contriving to have food pastures opened to
them in Winter, and encouraging the best
varieties of grass for a permanency, ytry lit
tle roots of uoy kind would be nectwary, as
any quautity of mutton and wool may be
produced from stimulation by corn, peus,
or grain. Nevertheless, n heavy crop nt
swedes given to a il ck of sheep intended
for the butcher, will bring them out in the
Spring riper by n good deal, and not only
will there he better and more mutton, but
the wool will be correspondingly improv
ed.
Sheep and turnip husbandry must be pen
ally adopted in tho United States to cave
the country from becoming a barren wild
vrness, for to tuch a condition it is, in reali
ty, coming hlo'Wly but surely. Gtorge Ganl.

It was a little hard on the boy, for he
meant ull and bad a sincere admiration
for tho girl. Tiny were sitting ut the tea
tnblo nith a ir.mpany of ctlierv, and as he
paaj-ed her the sugar, he murmered in uu
undertone: ''Here It is, sweet, jut likejou,"
Tae compliment was a little awkward, to
beture, but he meant it, and it seemed more
than cruel when, in a moment later, she
had occasion to pass the butter to him, she
drawled, "Here it is, soft, just like you."
Whru Mr. Van Cott comes singing down
the alle and fixes her reviving eyes upon a
man and he turns pale and trembles, she
thinks his soul is awakened. Yet we have
seen the very fame look iu a man's face
when he turned round after Mating the ser
taut girl aud suddenly encountered his
wile's mother. llurliniton llawlnjt.

A Kmlgct of Ilumc-Miiilo Christmas (ilfls.
Who Is it that every year Invents tho
thoiisaiid-aiid-ne new and prettv things
which haug on Christmas. trees, and stud'
tho toes of Christmas stockings ? Who is it
that has so wise and watchful an cyo for the
capacities of llttio people, nnd the tastes of
bigger ones, providing for each, planning
for tiny purses with almoso nothing iu them,
as well ns for fat wallets stuffed with bank
bills, and suggesting something which can
bo made, accepted and enjoyed by everybody,
large and small, all the wide world over ?
V ho can il bo that possesses this inexhaust
ible fertility of Invention and kindness of
heart ? No ordinary human being you may
be sure. Not Father Santa Clans I Ho has
enough to do with distributing tho presents
after they aro made ; besides, fancy work Is
not In n man's line not oven a saint's I Hut
what so likely as that ho should have a
mate, and that It Is to her wo are indebted
for all this ? What an immense work bask
et Mother Santa Clans must bo I What n
glancing thimble nnd swift needlo nnd
thread I Can't you imagine her throwing
aside her RcNsors and spool-ba to help the
dear saint "tackle up" and load the sledge ?
And who knows but she sits behind as he
drives over the roof of tho universe on the
blessed eve, and holds the rcius while Santa
Claus dispenses to favored chimneys the in
numerable pretty things which lie and she
havo chuckled over together months and
months before the rest of us knew anything
about tnem 1
This is not a fact. It can't bo proved in
any way, for none of us knows anything
about tho Santa Clauses or their abode.
Thero is no telegraphing, or writing to tho
select men of their town to inquiro about
them ; they haven't n post-ollie address
lint admitting it to be a fiction, it is surely
n pleasant one ; so, as the children say,
"Let's play that it is true," and proceed to see
what Mother Santa Claus has in her basket
fur us this year, We will first pull out some
easy things for the benefit of little begin
ners who are not yet up to nil the tricks of
tho needle ; then some a little harder for
moro advanced clas ; nnd, at bottom of all,
big girls not nlraid to divido will fiud plen
ty of elaborate designs suited to their taste
and powers.
A WALL I.ETTElllIOIJJEP..
This is something which quite a little boy
could make. Cut out three pieces of thin
wood, a foot long by six inches wide ; smooth
and aud-paper two of them ; bore a hole
in each corner and in '.the midillo of one
ide. and fasten them together with fine
wire, cord, ribbon, or the small brass pins
which are used for holding manuscripts.
I'hc pieces tdiou.d be held a littlo apart.
Cut one end of the third piece into some
ornamental shape, gluq it firmly to tho back
of nno of tho others, and suspend it from
the wall by a hole bored in the top. It will
bo fontid a useful thing to hold letters or
pamphlets. A clever boy could make this
much handsomer by cutting n pattern over
the front," or an initial, or monogram, or
name in the middle. The wood should be
oiled or shellacked.
SHOE-CASES.
These cases are meant to take the place
of paper when shoes are to be wrapped up
to go in a trunk. They aro made of brown
crash, bound with red worsted braid. One
end is pointed so as to turn over and button
down, or the top has strings over the braid
to tie the mouth up. There should be three
or four made at a time, as each holds but
one pair of shoes ; and yon will find that
your mamma or your unmarried aunts will
like them very much.
A NEW KIND OF CHRISTMAS TIE.
Nothing can be droller than to hang up
one's stockings, and nothing prettier or more
Ail1 of meaning than a Christmas-tree. But
for some of you who may like to make a
novelty in theso time-honored ways, we will
just mention that it is good fun to make
a "Christmas-pie" in an, enormous tin dish
pan, with a make-believe crust or yellow
cartridge paper, ornamented with twirls and
flourishes of the same, held down with pins
and have it served on Christmas Eve, full of
pretty things; and sugar plums, jokes and
jolly little rhymes fastened to the parcels.
The cutting should bo done beforehand, and
hiddin by the twirls of paper; but the car
ver can pretend to use his knife and fork,
and spooning out the packages will insure a
merry time for all at table. And one more
suggestion. Little articles wrapped in white
paper, can be put inside cakes, baked and
iced, and thus furnish another amusing sur
prise for the "pie" or tho Christmas-tree.
