The history of the Industries of a coramuulty
tire the landmarks of its progress. Tho enter
prlsoihat create them nro the agencies that
give prominence to localities. Often tho only
assignable reason why one place takes prece
dence over another Is that enterprise developed
Its resources. It Is an unquestioned fact that
for yeirs tho rich deposits of Iron ore that were
hid away In our hills wero undiscovered und
nutilized while other localities were reaping
rich harvest, until enterprise organized the
two companies that have developed tu some ex.
nt the ricli mineral resources of this region.
llloDmsbnrg, one of the most beautiful towns in
Pennsylvania, was quietly nestled amid the plc-
luresquo pccncry of the Susquehanna almost un.
nown up to the time of the building of the
furnaces it being little more than a wst village
pparently without purpose and ambition, but
nee then It has grown rapidly until to day it
is almost unilvalled for Its public spirit, the
beauty of its public buildings and its indlvldu-
1 enterprise. The reputation of its Ho els at
tracts strangers and its merchants and mechan
ics are known far and wide. In Its develop-
lents the Bloom Furnace, at present owned by
Wm. Neal & Sons, has been most prominent.
he history of this firm is almost the history of
letown. In 1810 Nilliam Mckelvy begun
liu-lness in n small way but gradually became
lie leading merchant of Columbia county.
We ought to stop here and pay a tribute to one
of the best citizens that Columb'a county ha
ver had as hundreds who have been material
ly aided can testify. He continued in business
alone until 1352. Then it was changed to Mc-
Kelwj, Neal & Co. The store was purchased
from Wm. McKcIvy and Wm. Neal in 1873 by
I. W. MeKelvv, a son of Wm. McKelvy, who
s probably doing the most extensive retail bus
nt si in the northern part of Pennsylvania. On
27th of December, 1852 an agreement was
ntered Into lnlwcm Wm. McKelvy, Wm.
Ninl and Jacob Melick "to erect and ojierate
an Anthracite Furnace near the town of Blooms
nirg," the two first turned taking three-fourth
itere-l anil, Mr. Melick one-fuurth, and the
jusiness to be uudtr the exclusive control of
Mr. MiKtlvy and Mr. Neal. The name of
lis firm was MeKelvv & Neat. In accordance
itli this agreement before the first day of April
1853 lliey purcha-id about seventeen acres of
Daniel Snuler and Joseph W. llendersholt on
lie Noilh Blanch canal near Blooinsburg. On
tiist dav of April 1853 ground was btoken
n the erection of the contemplated furnace
nil on the 1 lth day of April 1851 the furnace
and buildings were completed and put in blast.
It has been run from that period to the present
ever having been out of blast except for re
pairs and then only for a short period. In
pril 1872 .Jacob Melick disposed of his fourth
nteresl to I. W. McKelvy, C. W. Neal and R
C, Neal and in January 1873 Wm. Neal pur
chased the three-eighth ta interest of Wm. McKel-
y and the one-twelfth of I. W. McKelvy and
sold a two sixth interest tu bis sons, C. W. &
It. C. Neal. From that period the name of the
firm lias been Wm Neal & Sons. Since the
original purchase, the land has been increased
to about 35 acres ; on which there are three
lotihleand eight single dwelling bouses and
outbuildings. When the furnace was first built
it was out of town but since then it (the town)
has grown so that it is now in it. From April
lth 1S54 to January 1st, 1875, it was out of
blast i all lor repairs 17 months; made during
the time 117,968 gn ss tons of iron, an average
for the time in blast of 5,805 gross tons per :
num. From January 1st, 1875, to November
1st, 1S77, it was out of blast two months; made
luring that time 35,301 gross tons, or an aver
age for the lime in blast of 7,585 gross tons per
annum. The Bloom furnace enjoys an excel-
nt reputation for the quality of Its iron. I
s said to be exceeded by none in the market.
An evidence of this is the fact that all they
ve been able to manufacture has been readily
old notwithstanding the general stagnation in
tiie iron business. It is a matter of congratu
lat;on that it has never stopped during all the
panics that have visited the country since it
was built and now there is ore enougli on hand
to run it for nine months, which lias been put
here at a price in accord wit'i the times. Its
financial management is such that it enjoys the
fullest cotntdence of the community. But few
appreciate the importance of this industry to
the town. It has more than trebled the tiopti
rttion, graded and paved its streets, erected al
ts churches, except one, and school houses since
the furnaces have been erected. Republican.

Wiikiieas, it has pleased our Heavenly
Father to remove fro.u our mld-t by an untime

A. Fowler. And whoreas in his death the com
munity has lost a hopeful citizen, and society a
promising young man, and our be'oved order
a worthy and agreeable member. Therefore be
it
Jlttolted, first that in tills mysterious dspen
sation of God's Providence we bow in humble
submission to the will of Him who is too good to
be unkind and too wise to err.
Second. That in his sudden anil unexpected
death we wilt heed the solemn admonition of
Holy Writ. Be ye also ready for in such
hour as ye think not the Sen of Man cometh.
Third. That in token of our heart felt grief
ml great loss, that the charter and hall
of the Lodge be draped In mourning for thirty
days and that every brother wear crape durin
the same time.
Fourth. That these resolutions be published
in the papers of the county, and a copy be furn
