romped In childish cleej handling the queer
little suits of bine, nankeen, the first the
twins had ever worn after their baby gar
ment", and which the loving mother had
preerved as reminders ol her wonderful
children; ami plucking roses from the very
trees the, boys had planted and called by
their own names, before, leaving their native
laud forever.
H was about thirty miles south-west of
ilangkok, the capital of Slam, in a little fish
ing village called MaKlaunp, that thee
twins were born. The home, a thatchfd
cottage of bamboo, fronting on the "Great
Canal" which elves name to the vllljce,
was still standing at the timenfonr visit,
and thn very spot where the cradle of Chang
nnd Enguscd to hang on tho long, low ver
anda was pointed out to us. From this
house the family removed to Bangkok, when
the twins wereln their second year; and the
boyhood of the boys was passed in their lit
tle cottage four miles from the city, where
we found their parent. The houso was ono
of the sort known In Slam as "rloallng hou
ses," one story buildings, moored on the
river hank, and kept in place by large poles
on each ide, driven firmly in the river
bottom.
The little cot was built of teak boards,
nnd roofed wiib, atly leaves ; and conAih
i'd, besides the long venujda.otttookiug the
exercised, the band lengthed, of became
more elastic, until they could readily stand
side by side, or even back to back, and could
turn themclvcs In bed by rolling ono over

I met Mr. Hunter frequently during my
stay in Slam, and from him learned of his
finding and sending oil the twins. He said
they wero quiet, woll-behaved boys, who
gave no trouble during the voyage, nor ever
seemed sorry that they had set out on so
long a journey.
The "Siamese Twin," as we call them,
were not Siamese, after all, but the sons of
a Chinese father, who spoke the Tai-Chm
dialect, and a mother, one of whoe parents
was Chinese, nnd the other Siamese, no in
regard to parentage, Chaug and Kng were
really three-fourths Chinese, and only one-
fourth Siamese. We always heard them
apoken of, in Uangkok, as the "Cltinrtt
twlus," even by their pareuts, who never
seemed to remember either the boys' birth
place, or their mother's nationality. The
twius always wore the Chinese dress, and
had their hair braided in the Chinese fash
ion, as do always the male children of Chi
nese fathers, live where they may, Chang
and Kng had also begun to study the Chinese
language before leaving the home of their
parents, i, e , the written language ; but
being borujn Siarn they spoke the Siamese
moretlucully than they did Chinese. Their
mother's lauguage was also the one they re-
tained longest; for after my return I saw
the twin, when tbey had been more than
thirty years away from their native home,
and they could still understand much that I
aald to them In Siamese, but every word of
Chinese was forgotten.
Iho parents of Chnng and Eng were
lienithy, well-informed intelligent people,
belonging to the laboring class ; seemingly
good-natured and afiVetio'-ate to each other
and toward their children, of whom there

Story of a book Agent
A book agent recently met with a serious I
accident in the suburbs of LaCrosse. He
was walking along' the railroad when a
freight train came along. The unfortunate!
man was struck by tbo engine and knock
ed directly across theJrack, Btime fifty-three
cars passing over him. He was then turn
bled down a bank 8Q0 feet high, over stones
and stump, and just as be got to the
edge of the river he struck against a pile-
driver thut wa at work, and, bis head lying
on the top of the pile for a minute or two
the ponderous hammer descended, striking
him on the cheek, bruising bis' face some
what. Tho shock rolled him into the river
just as ail upriyer-packe't vja's .passing, and
by some mishap tho unfortunate man was
entangled in one of the wheels, and whirled
round and round for an hour aud a half be
fore he was discovered and released. lie I
was picked up nearly seuseless aud removed
to the cabin, where his wants were supplied.
After he had eaten a hearty meal he 'was
approached by tho captain, who asked :
Is there anything you would like to
have V
"So, no," replied tho canvasser, "there is I
nothing but this "
"What I whatl" ejaculated the'eaptniu,
