j MOV. TILUEN'S LETTER.
We desire to call the attention of our
readers to the letter written by Gov. Tilden
to Abram S. Hewitt, Esq. on the subject of
"Southern claims," printed on the first
pae of this issue. This bugaboo of tho
Republican party is effectually disposed of
and tho last falsehood of tho Campaign
refuted. Nothing can be more clear and
decisive than the1 language used by Gov.
Tilden and timid and doubtful voters who
may have fancied that these claims might
obtain recognition, in spite of the Constitu
tional prohibition, in event of Mr. Tilden'
election can now rest their souls in peace.
In company with the rest of the political
falsehoods of Mr. Tilden'a enemies, this one
has melted away and
"Like the' baseless fabric of a vision
Leaves not a wrack behind."
The bankers, bishops and leading clergy
men of Charleston, S C, have united in an
aldress to the people of the United States,
denying the statements made by Governor
Chamberlain, and asserting that there is no
defiance of law and order by the white poo
pie. A number of the members of the
Philadelphia bar have joined iu a protest
agalnsrthe President's South Carolina proc
lamation. Subsequently sixty Northern
merchants resident and doing busiuess iu
Charleston, met and adopted an address to
the people of the United States declaring
Governor Chamberlain's proclamation un
warranted by the real condition of South
Carolina, and fully endorsing tho statement
of tho clergy and bankers.
There was a glorious turnout ofthe Dem

A PROCLAMATION
Notwithstanding tho present depression of
business, and the accompanying distress, the
people of this country continue to enjoy
manifold blessings, and the moro especially
in the preservation of their institutions and

of God's favor is only temporarily dimmed
by the clouds that darken the country.

that the good people of this Commonwealth,
laying aside all secular occupations, assem

International Exchange in 'this city, which
took place this evening, were as follows:
On tho general result Tilden, $100;
Hayes, $80.
On tho remit In New Yurk City and State
Tilden, 1U0 ; Hayes, $40.
In New Jersey $100 to $55 on Tilden.
In Connecticut $100 to $72 and tSOou

In Indiana $100 to $75 on Tildcu.
In Pennsylvania $35 to $12 pu Hayes.
$200 were offered that Tilden would get a
larger majority in New York than Hayes
would receive from Ohio and Pennsylvania
together. No takers.
Any of our Republican friends who arc
sure that Hayes will bo elected can make a
fortune by hieing to Philadelphia or New

The farmers as owners of the soil cannot

unproductive, the burden really falls upon
the neighboring land. We have a great

the South. An idle acre in the South means

Tho Republicans sing small about the
"solid South" since their senseless cry was
met by the statement of the overwhelming
fact that Republicanism increased tho debt
of the Southern States from 1SG5 to 1872
from $50,034,198 to the enormous sum of
$315,181,143. If this is not enough to make
a "solid South'' against the Republican par
ty, pray what more is necessary ? A people
that would prolong the power of such a par
ty would be called worso than Insane. They
are going for a change.

that for every Republican thief behind the

Important to Centennial Visitors.
Many nf our readers who yet intend to
visit Philadelphia, will wisli to do so at tho
least possible cost nnd trouble. They will
nut wish to pny hotel rates when they can
obtain good accommodations at privato and
hoarding houses at one-third hotel rates.
During September and October the crowds
will be so latee that they cannot ho accomo
dated at hotels, and to avoid trouble on their
arrival all should know where they are going
to stop, before leaving home. You can ob
tain good accommodations by tho week for
from $5 to $10, or by tho day from SI to 2.
To do this you intisti write to J. Weaver &
Co., 1318 Market street, Philadelphia, nnd
they will, on receiptor $1, to pay them for
their trouhlo nnd expense, send you a list
of ono hundred hoarding houses, giving tho
prices charged by the day or week. You
can then celect 11 place for yourself, nnd
make arrangements direct with the parties
you wish to stop with. In this way you can
save from $10 to 25. Should you wish to
stop at a hotel they will tnaice all necccsBn
ry arrangements for you nnd charge you but
$1. '77i' is our advice. Take it. Stnte what
