We desire to call the attention of our
readers to the letter written by Gov. Tilden
to Abram S. Hewitt, Esq. on the subject of
"Southern claims," printed on the first
pae of this issue. This bugaboo of tho
Republican party is effectually disposed of
and tho last falsehood of tho Campaign
refuted. Nothing can be more clear and
decisive than the1 language used by Gov.
Tilden and timid and doubtful voters who
may have fancied that these claims might
obtain recognition, in spite of the Constitu
tional prohibition, in event of Mr. Tilden'
election can now rest their souls in peace.
In company with the rest of the political
falsehoods of Mr. Tilden'a enemies, this one
has melted away and
"Like the' baseless fabric of a vision
Leaves not a wrack behind."
The bankers, bishops and leading clergy
men of Charleston, S C, have united in an
aldress to the people of the United States,
denying the statements made by Governor
Chamberlain, and asserting that there is no
defiance of law and order by the white poo
pie. A number of the members of the
Philadelphia bar have joined iu a protest
agalnsrthe President's South Carolina proc
lamation. Subsequently sixty Northern
merchants resident and doing busiuess iu
Charleston, met and adopted an address to
the people of the United States declaring
Governor Chamberlain's proclamation un
warranted by the real condition of South
Carolina, and fully endorsing tho statement
of tho clergy and bankers.
There was a glorious turnout ofthe Dem
ocracy at Reading on the 2iith. It is esti
mated that 30,000 people were present.
Ibcre was an immeti.o procession and
Hjieeches were made by Gen. McCIeltan,
Ex-Gov. Uigler and Senator Wallace. Two
buffaloes wero roasti d for the people. On
unfortunate accident marred the pleasure of
the day ; the railing to a portico gave way
and precipitated thirty persons to tho side
walk, eighteen feet below. Twtlve of tho
unfortunates had limbs fractured or sustained
other injuries.

Mr. Hughes has an undoubted right to think

The farmers as owners of the soil cannot
escape taxatiou like .the bondholders and
bankers. If any one farm is unprofitable or
unproductive, the burden really falls upon
the neighboring land. We have a great
farm in the Southern country ; will the
farmers of the North voto to doublo their
own burdens by destroying the interests of
the South. An idle acre in the South means
a heavier tax upon tho crop grown on an
improved acre iu the North. Northern farm
ers will vote so that every acre in the Uni

Tho Republicans sing small about the
"solid South" since their senseless cry was
met by the statement of the overwhelming
fact that Republicanism increased tho debt
of the Southern States from 1SG5 to 1872
from $50,034,198 to the enormous sum of
$315,181,143. If this is not enough to make
a "solid South'' against the Republican par
ty, pray what more is necessary ? A people
that would prolong the power of such a par
ty would be called worso than Insane. They
are going for a change.
This Republican prating of honesty, puri
ty and virtuo strikes us as tolerably cool,
considering that in nearly every penitentia
ry in the United States there are to-day Re
publican politicians and tx-officc holders
convicted of every grade of stealing, and
that for every Republican thief behind the
bars there are scores of Republican thieves
