City hns been a surprise to nio and no lets
to many of your former admirers. I think
I understand why the republican lenders

what I do not unilerstiind, la that you should
no readily Oder your n'sl'daucc 1 Yoti mint
have known, slnco 1872, that tho reform
iiloui. whoso seed you helped to sow took
Ktrong root with us here, mid that llic.o roots
cannot, be pulled out without soma trouble.
I do not think tlmt you are rIvcii to the lllu
nIoii of lioliij; nblu to rc-rcpiiblleanizti tho
German reform clviuonU of this locality,
even with the rhetorical mastership that It
your own. Hut as tho person-) who have
called you hero bcllere, or at least pretend
to brieve1, that such a dexterous performntice
ran ho accomplished, and inasmuch 119 the
liberal Oermann aro thin exposed to the hu
inUlating suspicion of requiring only an In
1 1 niation from yourself to bo converted (thl1
explain1 why you make your first campaign
speech In German,) it Is right and proper to
protest. Far too lone already, tar too long
for tho honor of t)in German clement as well
its tho honor of all of us, has tho falso idea
been worked and speculated upon that the
Gentian vote can ba effectively Influenced
mid controlled by somo ono great or small
politician. It is high timo to do away with
itch notions.
Hut in case that your speaking in German
is accidental, and that tho inference drawn
from it be therefore void, I still must avail
myself of your presence in order to set forth
something to me nil-important. Haviug
been a member of the New York conference
to which you Invited me, I feci called and
justified in doing so.
Disgusted with corruption in tho reigning
party, without confidence in tho other par
ty, I Lelield in a conference of independent
patriotic men a ray of hope (or reform, The
spirit that prevailed in the conference sur
passed my expectations ; tho result of its de
liberations were satisfactory to me. Although
many members were inclined to cross the
Itubicon immediately and to use tho confer
ence as a starljuj point for a third partyj the
opinion of tlio more prudent members pre
dominated, viz : to remain as yet in a poai
tion of waiting ; to issuo an earnest address
to tho pesple, and to found a third party
onlyin cats that this address should b un-
heeded by tho several conventions which
wcre.to bo held In the immediate future,
Th& address to tho purposo, edited by
yourself, left'lio doubt which class pf ,Presi
dentist candidates Was' meant to, bo worthy;
of support. The first sections manifestly
depicted' the class represented by Messrs,
Morton, Iilnino and Conkling, while the
other sections were directed against such can
didates of expediency as Hayes and Hart'
ranfl. There was not the least doubt of this
in the conference.
Nor can the author of the address be
doubt of it. Since this seems to be the case,
however, I intend to assist ids memory and
remind him that when he read the address
before me and my friend on tho day prece
ding tho conference, and mado'us acquainted
witty its intent (lint he himtflf after each
sectloniiadbeeri gon'o .through Avlth, caljed
the names of tho candidates that were mean
though not named ; and that after reading to
us tho following : ,
"We shall support no candidate wno, how
ever, favorably judged by his nearest i'rlends,'
Is not publicly known to posses thoso quafi-
ties of mind and character which. tho stern
task of genuine reform requires, for tlio
American pcoplo cannot now afford to risk
tho future of the republic ii; experiments uu
mere supposed virtuo or rumored ability to
be trusted'on'tbo strength" of prlvatoreCom-i
mendations."
He turned to us and remarked plainly, and
as if it were a self evident. matter :
"THIS DISPOSES OP MB. HAYES."
If we compare tiiis passage,- which pro
nounces the verdict upou Mr. Hayes, with
the parole likewise issued by Mr. Schurz,
viz: that this election did not turn on polit
ical articles pf faith as much as ou the per
lonalilia of the candidates, not on platforms
but on' the'.ieh!tltat stodrl ou Iberar-tthea we
discover the irrefutable fact that not only
Mr. Schurz but the entire conference, all of
whom enthusiastically approved of the ad

Hayes as among those who should absolutely
iwt, be upported. And, not yet, coutenUd
with this, the conference, by their sweeping
approval of Mr. Adams' speech, fixed its
programme as follows: Ilristnw orTilden;

It is tho opinion of somo naturalists that
bilds nevr die what is calle 1 a natural
death, but come to their end by tome
murderous or accidental means ; yet I have
found sparrows nud vlrcos in the fields nnd
woods dead or dying, that bore no marks of
violence; audi remember that once in my
childhood a red-bird fell down in tho yard
exhausted and was brought in by the girl ;
iU bright scarlet imaee is indelibly stamped
upon my recollection. It is not known that
birds have any distempers like the domestic
fowls, hut X saw, n social sparrow 0110 day

iuggested a disease that sometimes attacks
poultry; one. eye was nearly put out by a
scrofulous-looking sore, and on tho last joint
of one wiug there was a large tumorous or
luugous growth that crippled tho bird com
olctely. un another occasion I piclccu up
one that appeared well but could not keen
.its center of gravity when in flight, and so
tell to the cuunu.
Oho reason why dead birds and animals
aro so rarely round is, that on the approach
of death their instinct prompts them tocriep
away in some noie or unucr some cover,
where they would bo least liable to fall
prey to their natural enemies. It is doubt
ful if Any of .tho, came birds, like tho mc-

A year ago lait April, the pigeous flew for
two ot three days up and down the Hudson.
In lone bowing Ifnes, or else in dense mas
ses, they moved across tho sky. It was not

sees more than a flock or two in a season,
and what a spring token it is 1 The great
