Douglas Hughes, an account of which was pub-
lisluil la-t week, plead guilty lo Iho charge of
lioivo stealing, in court on Tuesday. Ho was
ubo indicted for stealing a number of other ar
ticle at the same Unit', to which he plead not guil
ty. The jury called in the case did not agree with
bun, and convicted Um of stealing a pair of
boots. He was remanded lo the custody of the
sheiiU'to await sentence.
Tho Columbia county S. S. Convention met
at New Columbia on Tuesday August 29, at
10 a. 111. and adjourned on Thursday August 31,
Rev. A. HouU, Rev. Thomas and Aaron
Smith were elected delegates to the Stato Con
vention. Tho following officers wero elected

crowd of people gathered at Geiger's on Satur
day evening, and raised a fine hickory pole
about 100 feet in length. Brief addresses were
made by C. B.Hiockwny and Hon. J. G. Freeze.

corner of the town, and no band was present,

First Male persons who have served in
the army and been honorably discharged are
entitled lo their cillrens papers upon proving
one year's residence in tho United States and in
the state where the application is made.
Second Male pen-ons who came to tho
United Slates under eighteen years of age, have
been in the rountiy live years, and in the statu
0110 year of tho five, and are twenty-one years
old, upon producing 11 citizen who will swear to
the same, nro entitled to citizenship.
Third Male jiersons who have declared
their intention to becomo citizens in 11 court of
record, two years beforo making application for
citizenship, when ihey have bee-n in the United
Slates fivo years (one of tho five in the slate),
and nro over twenty-one years old, and produc
