Care and Feed of Fowls In Summer.
We have at this season to consider the
feed for our fowls. Corn is usually the stan
dard with farmers and amateurs. I like it
in cold weather, but in warm weather I can
not get as many eggs by iu use as I can with
wheat, wheat bran, or even oats.
Wheat is splended feed at any season. I
have often found that when I had fed
wheat for some time and began to feed
corn again Unit the chickens would after
picking a few grains, stop and come up to
me, and when I went to the next yard they
would follow to the gate, as if they wanted
something else.
Oats make a fair summer feed, and arc
worth per bushel, perhaps half as much us
heat. Wheat screenings, when Iroin a
merchant mill ltial'ing a crack article ot
our, re worth all they cost, but those from
custom mills aro not usually of much vat-,
ue. . '
Uarley is invaluable for fattening fowl,
those ted on it readily bringing'" to 5 cents
per pound more than those fattened on corn.
It Is, however, open to the same objections
as corn as 11 suiamer teed.
Wheat l'liin is a fine summer feed, and
if 0110. can get that from which but one grade
of middlings ban been taken, it is the more
valuable.
Corn and oat meal, mixed takes the place
f corn meal as a feed lor young chickens
and other young fowl.
lint the feed which we prefer to all others
is as follows ; Uoil two bushels of potatoes
in a barrel kettle, mid when tin potatoes are
done so as to crusheasily, mash them well
and add 40 pounds ot bran and 20 ol mixed
corn and oat meal. The heat of thu pota
toes will cook the meal and bran well, and
and when cold it will cut liko mush. It is
the best possible feed for young fowls, and
for old ones also.
Turnips may take tho placj of potatoes,
and auv medicine or stimulant required
may be put iu it. I usually give red pepper
once a mouth lu winter, and ofteuer if they
fing iu laying. .1. .1. Van Aidtn lit Jiural
