What Constitutes a (lood Fertilizer.
No ordinary plant can thrive without n
Rulllelent supply of eacli of n number of sub
stances needed for its food. W'ftli nn abun
dance of nil these in forms in which the
plant can use them, and with other circum
stances favorable, tho plant will flourish
nnd the yield will bo lnrjre. Itut if the
nvailable'supply of any ono of them be too
small n light yield is inevitable. Every 01
dinary soil contains nil the ingredients of
plant food. In "worn out" soils tho avnila
ble supply of ono or mora ot these U gener
ally insufficient.
Fertilizers supply tho plnnt with food
which tho noil lacks. Barnyard manure
not only does this, but al-o improves the
so'l as u living place for plants. Lime nud
plaster (sulphate of lime) are necessary as
plant food, but ns fertilizers, they are chiefly
valuable in rendering other plant food
nvailablo to crops. The ingredients to plnnt
food generally most lacking In our cultiva
tea soils are nitrogen,, phosphoric acid and
potash. The usefulness of guanos,superphos
pbates, bone immure, poundretts, potash
salts, and other similar fertilizers, depends
mainly upon these ingredients. Such fer
tilizers are generally more or less valuable
in proportion as they contain larger or smal
ler percentages ol nitrogen, phosphoric acid,
and potash, and ns these are in a form more
or leas available to the plant. If nil the
other conditions fur a profitable crop of corn
or turnips are fulfilled in a soil, except that
phosuhoriu acid is deficient, the phosphoric
ncid must be supplied. This may be doiif
with bone, which contains a large percen
tage of phosphoric acid combined with lime
as "phosphate of lime."
