ly krt Wasteful as it appearsami Is certainly
much better than leaving tlio field unseeded
becinse tho farmer expects to plow it the
following season. S01110 even argue that it
pavs to sccdapriug grain which it is intended
to plow and sow in the fall. I!u,t this is very
doubtful.
Clover the firntsiiminer makes a very small
growth of either lop or root, and as stubble
for fall sowing should be plowed as early as
possible the clover can be of very little value.
The oats or barley shelled on the ground
in harvesting are worth nearly market value
as grain for manure when the field is plowed
early. I am not sure that it would pay to
sow oats on stubble ground to be cultivated
under just before drilling in the! whiat. Such
land will be a better, moisterseed bed than
if left hare duiingthe month of August and
early part of September. We have learned
during the past few years that the crop of
wheat depends mainly on tho growth and
vigor of the plant the preceding fall. Any
thing which secures this, whether it be clo
ver or other sucmilent plants plowed under
U of great benefit to the crop.

The following Is a recipe for making I.ef
nrt's liquid grafting wax, which is highly re
commended in France where it was invent
ed, and until lately kept secret : Melt one
pound of common rosin over a gentle fire.
Add to it an ounce of beef talloW and stir it
well. Take it from the fire, let it cool down
a little and then mix witli a teaspoonl'ul of
spirits of turpentine and after that about
seven ounces of very strong alcohol (sixty
five percent.) The alcohol cooljj it down so
rapidly that it will be necessary to put it
again on the lite, stirring it constantly. Still
the utmost care must be exercised to keep
the alcohol from getting inflamed. To
avoid it the best way is to remove tho vessel
from the fire when the lump that may havo
been formed commences melting again. This
must be continued till it' is a homogeneous
mass, similar to honey. After a few days
exposure to tho atmosphere it assumes
whitish color, and becomes as hard as stone,
being impervious to water or air.

The nnuual report of the State Hoard of
Health of Michigan for the year lS7.r, con
tains a number of import-int papers in rela
tion to the general question of public hy
giene, une nt these is on the use ot poisons
by l'rofessor Kctlize, and especially that of
pans green, to extensively used for killing
me uoioratlo potato bug. Although an
alarm was occasioned by the Use of this in
secticide, Professor Kedize states, as the re
sult of 11 long examination, that in more
than 1,000 townships in Michigan, no case
of poisoning of vegetables has occurred to
the tops of which paris green had been ap
plied, and that the same is thecase in wheat;
that arsenic in no form has been found as
tho constituent of tho plant grown under
such circunnttances. In reference to the ul
timate disposition of the poison in tho soil,
ho comes to the conclus on that there are
certain agents that take it Up, making it sol
uble, so that it is harmless, the most potent
of which is hydrate of iron..

out of the way, the rough places bo smooth

with stones and solid earth, ami the teams
will haul enough more with less breakage,
in a siugiu year, to pay the trouble of making
