Agricultural. Mules for Fnrm Work. A corr)onclcnt of llio Jnimcan Farm Journal Hum strongly Htntejt (ho nttpcriority of mules over horse for farm work In the noutli. Tho sntijpctU worthy (ho nltcnllnn of northern formers: "Mules on nn nvcrngo nro inoro valuable tlmn horse, nro moro cnsllv raised, arc not iiKciy 10 run nwny in wagoning nml plow lug, nro longer lived, will do mnro work nml require, lm feed nnd nltontlon; they nro utrongcr, will draw n heavier load nnd stand ft great denl moro hardships, nnd nro in every way preferable to the horso for gener nl farm use. Mules eomo in earlier, being ready for light work when thrro yearn old. They will then do enough, work on tho farm to pay for feed J nflcr having ntlained tho ngo of four yearn, they nro ready for nny klmt of service Hut tho horses (colt) most bo kept until lie la four years old, beforo ho ii worked nt all, and when ho is four ho must bon first-rato colt to bring as much ns the mulo will nt two years old. Hut ns mi mo tho Animals aro both required for farm work sec what adlfiercnco tlicro is in favor of tho mule. Tho working lifo of tho jnulo can bo safely estimated nt thirty years, mid that of n horso nt ten years. So whilo n mulo is working his life out, three liotses will bo required to do equal service Hut these nro not tiio only items. Tho saving of feed is nt least one-fourth, or not less than f 47 bushels of corn, nnd 427 tons of hay. Tlicso nmounts, ndded to tho original saving in purchaso of animals, sliotv nn ndvantngo in favor of tho uso of tho mulo over tho liorso of over $1,000 during tho ordinary lifo of tho animal. The grnin nnd dry feed being just tho thing for him. Maxims von Farmers. It is worth -whilo for nil farmers everywhere to remem ber that thorough culture is better than three mortgages on their farm. That nn oIFensivo war against weeds is fivo times less expensive than a defonsivo one. That good fences nlways pay better than lawsuits with neighbors. That hay is a groat deal cheaper roado in summer than purchased in winter. That moro stock perish from famino than founder. That a horso who lnys his cars back, nnd looks lightning when nnyono approaches him, is vicious. Don't buy him. That scrimping tho feed of fattening hogs is waste of grnin. That overfed hens won't lay eggs. That educating children properly is mon ey lent nt 100 per cent. " That one evening spent nt home in study is moro profitnblo than ten lounging nbout country taverns. Regularity in Ff.edino. It is very comfortable in cold weather to sit by a warm fire. Many who have tho caro of stock dislike to leavo warm quarters, and cling to tho firo place, letting half after half hour pass by, whilo tho hungry stock aro shivering nnd hungering for feed and wnter. In thus waiting for food and water, an nni mal loses flesh rapidly. Brutes aro tho best time keepers, in tho world. They know tho very minute their food should bo supplied, and aro disappointed if it does not come. Tho stock breeder, therefore, should seo that regularity and promptness prevail in tho caro and management of stock. Thoir var ious want3 should have attention to tho very minute daily. 'If hired men will not bo prompt in taking caro of stock, if thoy don't sympathize with brutes in winter, they ought to bo discharged and moro humano men omployed in their places. Tho poor brutes do sufTer severely in winter Even in warm barns nnd stables they can hardly keep warm In cold weather, but if left out of doors, exposed to colds and storms, their sufferings aro intenso, nnd they should be fed with tho regularity of clock work, and fed all they can eat, and thoy will requiro at least ono- third moro food to keep up ani mal heat than they would if kept in the sta ble. All stock should havo shelter. It is cruel to leavo it exposed to the rigors of win ter without shelter. Rural World. Horse Stable Floors. Tho long debated question ns to tho best material for stablo floors is being revived. A clay floor was advdeated for years, and such was tho earnestness of iU advocates and tho many arguments brought to bear upon it, that wo were induced somo fifteen or twenty years ago to try it. In three or four months wo had tho planks back again, being Bovorely satisfied of tho disadvantages of clay for horses. Our present floor of plank is inclined a litflo from front to rear, where tho usual gutter is mado to carry off the liquid voidings. We do not believe in sand, coal ashes, sawdust nsphaltum, flags, cobble stones, or any of theso modern devices to injuro horses. Thus far wo havo never noticed that this little inclination was in nny way injurious j nnd wo doubt whether tho wooden grating placed over tho plank ing would be advisable, on tho ground that tho auimal would bo no moro comfortable while this movable grating or second floor might lead to nccidents. When n person can keep horses in good, souud, healthy condition for from firo to seven year?, as wo havo done, on a carefully constructed plank flooring, inclining a little to tho rear, it is just as well to bo satisfied with it. Useful Kecipcs. Squash Pie. To ono pint of sifted squash take ono quart of milk, four eggs, ono and one-half cups of sugar; cinnamon nutmeg and salt. They aro delicious mado this way. ITah QiNciERnitnAD. Four pounds of flour, three of sugar, ono and one-half butter ono fourth of a pound of ginger, ten eggs, one-tcaspoonful of saleratus ; seeds if you llke4 Ginqer SsArs. Ono cup of sugar, half n tin full each of molasses and butter, somo ginger, and enough of flour to mako It stiff. If you think you caunot roll it out it will bo Just right. To Clean Oauvrd Furniture. Apply a paint brush dipped in kerosene oil. It will remove all dust from cracks, mako tho furnituro look liko new, nnd tho smell dis appears in on iiour, It tuo windows aro open. Jenny Linu Oake. Two and one-half cups of flour, ono and ono-hnlf cup butter, ono cup of cream of tartar, one-half teaspoon fill of soda and two eggs j spico to your taste. To Preserve Lamp Chimnevb. A lamp chimney may bo mado almost indo structive by putting it in a vessel of cold water over tho fire, ana letting it remain until tho water bolls. It will be found that boiling toughens in this case. Consr-BTAncii Cake. Ono cup each of butter, ctrn-starch, and Bwcet milk, two and one-half cups of flour, tho whito of six eggs, ono tcaspoonful of cream tartar, and fino tonsnoonfui of boua: dissolve, tho corn ktarck iu milk. ' Younq Folks. Iiogemls. THE ltttSCHIlACKEI) MlT8ICTAKfl. Long ngo tlicro lived nt Alx-la-Cliapello two musicians both of whom wero hunch backed. Itut n great dlffcrenco existed In their faces and characters. Frlcdcl was well looking nnd nmlablo. n fino musician, for his soul was full of goodness and it found expression through tho tones of his violin, llut UeltJJi had ugly red hair and a more ug ly temper, nnd his playing was so unmusi cal that tiono ever listened to him for pleas ure, rims it happened timl I'ricdei nnd ids violin wero nlways in demand for nil occa sions of merry-making and frolic, whilo llcinzw.n toft unemployed. Now Friedel loved Agnthn, tho daughter of a rich wlno merchant, nnd she, perceiving his soul nnd forgetting Ills deformity, returned his love, All went well with tho lovers themselves but knowing tho prido nnd love of money of tho maiden s father, they determined not to speak to him until they should bo compelled to do so. At last a very rich suitor do sired Agatha for his bride, nnd obtained her father's consent. Then it was that Frio del was obliged to speak, though witli sink lug heart, Tho wlno merchant drovo him away with harsh words. Poor Fricdel, quito distracted, wandered, ho know not whither It was lato when tho chilling dews recalled him to his senses and ho sought tho town As ho nppronched it strango sounds were in tho air nnd sights moro marvellous met his gaze. Daws nnd all sorts of night-birds wero screaming, nnd nbovo tho tops of tho houses tho broom-riding witches wero troop ing. And nil made their way to tho fish market, or Pnrwisch, ns it was called, in Aix-la-Chapcllc. Friedel also went there. and great was his amazement at what ho saw. Tho squnro was illuminated by little flames in iho air, ami crowds of female fig' urcs were moving about. Then Friedel re mcmbcred that this was quarter-day, nnd tho witches wero said to hold a picnic on that day in this very square. As he thought of this a woman, who looked very much liko tho mayoress of tho town and seemed to bo tho leader of the others, advanced to meet him and led him to a table loaded with all kinds of delicacies nnd delicious bovcr ages, cno invited mm to cat, nnu niter no had refreshed himself, placed in bis hand a violin and asked him to play music fordanc ing. As soon as tho violin sounded, they moved away tho tables and seats and pre pared to dance. It gave Friedel a very nov' el sensation to pcrccivo that whilo all ap pcared to bo busily talking and laughing, no sound reached his cars. Soon the lady-prcs ident gavo tho signal to begin ; then tho vi olin of Friedel seemed ns if bcwitchcd, for in spito of him it would go quicker and more quickly, and tho dancers faster and more swiftly till nil wns n3 witchlike as could well bo. At length Friedel fell on a seat ex' hausted, and tho lady-president thanked him for his sweet music, and commanded him to kneel and receive his reward. Then she whispered words of strango sound above him, and laid her hand on his poor deform cd shoulders, nnd quickly removed tho hump from them and placed it in a dish which she instantly closed. As sho did this tho clocks sounded the hour of ono and in a twinkling all vanished and Friedel was alone. Weary and confused, ho hastened home, and to bed, whero for the remainder of tho night strange dreams came to him. But iii tho morning ho found tho most wonderful part of all to bo true. Ho was straight and comely in form as in face ; moreover, a goodly sum of money was in tho pocket of his jacket: cnougli to mako him equal to any of tho suitors of Agatha. As soon as possible ho repaired to tho house of tho wino merchant, and told him his story uudcr tho promise of secresy. JNow his reception was quitodil- ferent from tho former one, but it was moro tho sight of tho money that decided tho mer chant to mako Friedel his son-in-law than tho los3 of tho hump. Then wero tho lovers mado happy. Although this ndventuro of Friedel s wns to bo a secret, it escaped in somo way, and among others Heinz heard tho story, nis envy and hatred of Friedel, which had been bitter enough before, wero increasod, and ho reported wicked stories of Friedel and accus ed him of tho most immoral iutcrcourso with tho witches; But ho secretly determined to attond their picnic on tho next quarter-day and try his fortuno among them. 2fow as ho came to tho fish-market the Fame scene met hi3 gaze as that which Friedel had be held, and Heinz advanced "boldly, bearing his own violin, and making signs that ho was willing to play. Tho danco was formed but Heinz was so occupied in gazing avari ciously at tho plato on tho tablo that ho for got his music nnd played even moro discor dantly than was his custom. Soon tho danco became a race, and Heinz believed he was doing so well as to givo tho witches great pleasure, when they all ran up to him and shook their fists at him. Ho had also been so unwise as to call by name somo wives of tho town ho thought ho recognized. When tho lady-president commanded him to kneel ho thought it was time to claim a reward, so ho selzod a large gold drinking cup. The lady gavo him so smart a box on tho ear that ho gladly dropped tho cup ; she then took from a tightly covered dish tho very hump she had taken off tho shoulders of Friedel and fattened it on tho breast of Heinz. At that instaut tho clock struck ono and he was left alone. Who can describe tho rage and despair of Heinz? Ho added also to his misfortune by foolishly telling th story, and thus becamo tho laughing stock of tho wholo city. Only Friedel felt sorry for him, and he, out of his goodness of heart, maintained Heinz comfortably nil tho rest of his days. Tin: ISeevks and the lluTCiicrts. Tho bcoves, onco on n time, determined to mako an end of tho butchers, vlioso wholo art, thcy said, was conceived for their destruction, So they assembled together, and had already whetted their horns for tho contest when n very old ox, who had long worked at tho plow, thus addressed them: "Havo a care, my friends, what you do. Theso men, nt least, kill with decency and skill, but if wo full into tho hands of botches instead of butchers, wo shall suffer a doublo death, for bo well assured men will not go without beef, even though they wero without butch ers." Itettcr bear with tho ills wo havo than fly to others that wo know not of. Tin: Am and tub GitAssiioiTEit. An ass hearing feomo grasshoppers chirping was delighted with tho music, and determining, if ho could, to rival tlicm, asked them what it was thoy fed upon to mako them sing to swoctly. When they told him that they sunned upon nothing but dew, tho ass be took himself to tho same diet and boon ditd of hunger. Ono man's meat ii another man's poison. The Km and the Woi.k, A kid being mounted on tho roof of a loAy house, and seeing a wolf pass below, began to rcvilo him.
