Kepublican conventions aro not usually
considered of much Importance In a local
point of view In this county, but tho pros
pect of tho two offices of Commissioner and
Auditor brought together a representation
from all tho districts except three, and tha
delegates present were not so favorable to
Democratic volunteers as in tho past. They
therefore repudiated nil such, and their par
ty is expected to stick closely to tho ticket,
Jlr. llnymnn withdrew as n candidate for
Commissioner and Jlr. Sands was nominated
by a voto of 27 to 21 for Frank Fvans,
Altogether tho proceedings wcro conducted
with spirit anil somo rich scenes might be
described, wcro it of any earthly consequence
what tho convention did. After an official
report comes to light wo may have more to
say.
The "ring" had tilings their own way
The principal point of iasuo between the
magnates was the chairmanship of tho coun
ty committee. That is of importance be
cause tho llepublican State authorities dis
tribute considerable amounts of money for
electioneering purposes, which goes into the
hands of tho chairman 111 eacli county. Jlr.
I). A. Hockley, of the Ilemtblican, was elect
ed chairman by a nearly unanimous voto of
tho committee.

The following should liar appeared last wcek,i-

I was down in Centralia to-day. I see the
people are all at work, tho collieries making
steady time. Jlr. Jos. II. Dawes, supt. at Ha
rd Dell, resigned and left this morning for Cal
ifornia, llo is succeeded by Jlr. Kd. William",
formerly of the Continental. Patrick Jlcllrcar
ty, an old resident here, took charge of the Con
tinental colliery on Jlonday last. Jiichael
Ilrennan, a young man of Centralia, was badly
squeezed by a fall of coal at the Kepplier colliery
on Friday.
Saturday was pay-day at tho Continental col
liery, and witli the exception of a few stumbles,
oti'i'ny to the bud condition e the patmentt, there
was nothing to mar the usual quiet of (lie town.
Sunday morning tlicro was n little unpleasant
ness between two persons, at Peltier's hotel. A
knock-down or two, and all was over. The
same evening a belligerent floored another, op
posite Jlr. Van Heureu's store. Some of tho
hitter's friend tried their knuckles on the form
er, who sodii yelled enough. Tho Wough po
lice were at prayer-meeting and of courso no ar
rests nere made.
I was talking to a llepublican who lives in
North Conyngham. He is the only one there.
He intends to hold a llepublican delegate meet
ing, and wants to know how he can have two
votes in their convention for commissioner. He
has been trying to deputise some Democrat to
gonith him, apnta paid, nf emrte, but thus
far ho has been unsuccessful, our Democracy are
too honorable. He says theie is mousy in it,
but who cares for that?
Centralis is again blesed wilii a new fledged
limb of the law. This time it is Hryson number
2. A cool, calculating, industrious young man
of fair ability and good backing, ho ought to
succeed. Of course the field is poor for crimi
nal business; the town mid surrounding! are
too peaceable and law-abiding for that, but civil
business is plentiful, and Jlr. H. will attend to
it wilh promptness.
I noticed Jlr. Stephen Thomas on the streets
again. 1011 know lie lias been sojourning at
Fort G rover for some time past, owing to some
misunderstanding between himself and wife.
He speaks highly of your town('s whi-ky) and
thanks your people's generosity for "knowing
whereof lie speaks." Jloro soon.

happily passing away, and Intelligent ph)slclans
havo ceased to measurotho supposed 01 cacy ot a
remedy by thovlolcncoof its effects, thero still lin
gers among tho older practitioners a few of these pre
dilections lu favor ot "heroic" treatment, which It
would bo lucky tor their patients If they had aban
doned. Ono of these Is a fondness for administering
drastic purgatives, such as blue pill, calomel, Jalap
nnd castor oil. A contrast of tho effects of these
drenching drugs with tho mild nnd bcncllclent oper
ation ot Ilostter's Stomach Hitters, Is tho very best
argument that enn bo adduced against tho wisdom
of such destructlvo treatment. Tho old fashioned
cathartics convulso tho stomach, and relax tho bow
els so abruptly nnd copiously as to weaken them,
llosletter's Hitters, on tho contrary, never gripe tho
Intestines, but produeo a laxative erfect resembling
the action of nature. At the satno tltnc they removo
thecausoot constipation, by arousing tho dormant
liver to secrete tho bile necessary to tho regular
performance ot tho excretlvo function, aud enable
tho stomach to thoroughly digest tho food. Indiges
tion biliousness hav Ing been thus overcome, n regu
lar habit of body Is tho necessary conscmicnce,
which tho occasional subsequent uso of iho Hitters
renders permanent. Kury dlsagrecablo symptom
which, In the absence ot perfect digestion and evac
uation, harrasscs tho system, vanishes under the
lnllucnce of the great national stomachic and altera
tive. Health and vigor aro twin blessings that fol

Theso pills are alterative, and produco n healthy

These remedies are a certain cure forconsumptlon,
as tho Pulmonic Syrup ripens tho matter and puil

liver, create .1 healthy bile, and rcmavo nil disease of
tho liver, often a cause of consumption. The Sea

makes a good digestion, and enables tho organs to

THU MULTIPLICATION Of DISEASES.
Diseases multiply. Ono begets another. A trif

far more forinldablo diseases; a uiultltudo of ail

into formidable maturity, aro alike powerful to cure.
Tho process of recovery Is, of course, longer when
